Senate Moderates Warm to Reconciliation

Senate Democratic centrists aren’t saying “yes” just yet, but when it comes to passing a crucial piece of the health care reform puzzle, party leaders have reason to be optimistic that enough of their most fickle Members will put them over the top.

With few exceptions, Democratic moderates interviewed Wednesday revealed little resistance to the idea of using controversial budget reconciliation rules to clear the final health care reform package and deliver it to the president’s desk. Given their strong opposition to embracing this strategy when health care was being debated last year, their fresh openness could prove significant even if some moderates ultimately vote “no.”

This once again puts the lie to the concept of the ‘Blue Dog’ Democrats. There is no such thing. There are only Democrats. And they will do whatever the party leadership tells them to do. Even sacrifice their political careers.

It’s like how once you sign up with the Mafia, you can’t pick and choose.

“There are plenty of people in our caucus who would like to not vote for reconciliation, but my guess is 51 is something [leadership] can get,” said one Democratic Senator of the simple-majority vote needed for passage. “This is like a box canyon, and reconciliation is the only way out.”

Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) repeated urgings for centrists to hold their fire on reconciliation has clearly paid off; it has allowed moderates to keep their votes flexible as the party weathered the loss of its supermajority on Jan. 19 when Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) was elected.

Reid, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and President Barack Obama have known for more than a month that they were likely going to have to use reconciliation to get health care over the final legislative hump

Which once again puts the lie to Mr. Reid’s claim last week that “nobody is talking about reconciliation.”

But even the most benighted denizens of Searchlight, Nevada must have by now picked up on the fact that Mr. Reid will say or do anything to get his way.

As Lenin said, "words are only tools to power."

Of course, the same centrist Democrats who drove such a hard bargain over health care reform last year were clear they would not sign off on legislation absent an understanding of what policies would be included in the reconciliation vehicle. But they were careful to not rule it out either.

“I wouldn’t say it’s only because of the leader’s suggestions,” Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) said of why she has kept an open mind. “I think that instinctively we know that these negotiations are still going on, you know, informally between the House and the Senate. … I think people are just waiting to see, you know, what happens.”

Like other Democratic moderates, Landrieu is only OK with reconciliation now because the bulk of the health care reform agenda was already approved under the original Senate bill that needed 60 votes to pass.

“What I said from the beginning is I would be opposed to passing and crafting a bill through reconciliation. But this bill was not crafted or passed through reconciliation, it was passed with 60 votes in the United States Senate,” Landrieu said.

Again, for Democrats words have no meaning. They are simply tools.

Though it is clearly a good sign for Reid that centrists are open to voting for reconciliation, many of those Members aren’t quite ready to sign a letter pledging their support for a bill, aides said. Pelosi may demand such a letter as proof positive that the Senate has enough support to pass the bill.

“People might make a private commitment to leadership but wouldn’t sign a letter,” one senior Senate Democratic aide said.

Indeed, some Senators fear that by signing a letter they could be lambasted by conservatives and other groups for weeks before voting. The attacks would only increase for those lawmakers if the controversial process falls apart and a vote never takes place.

That is to say Pelosi is trying to get the Senate Democrats to put in writing that they are going to vote for the ‘reconciliation’ bill if the House Democrats put their careers on the line to pass it.

Which just goes to show that the Democrats are such notorious liars and backstabbers, they don’t even trust each other.

In any case, we suspect that the better name for these purportedly independent Democrats would be ‘Blue Poodles.’

    No surprise there. What galls me the most is that Joe-average can plainly see this and yet seem OK with it.

    What a deplorable state of stupidity the American electorate occupy!

      Sometimes I feel like I’m in the world of the zombies. They just keep on walking around bumping into things and never addressing a thing.

    The country could be headed toward another civil war.

    Based on past experience in the US, as led by Washington and Lincoln, our greatest citizens, that can sometime be the only way to stop the insanity.

    Now, who do you think would win?

    The side of homosexuals, Code Pink, drug addicts, basement jack-offs, anti-technology, femi-nazi, artists, welfare queens, grievance mongering tax cheats and trial lawyers, data twisting professors, and corrupt career politicians?

    Or the side that designs, builds and repairs machines and buildings, feeds the country, loves the Constitution, loves and defends the country, policemen, servicemen, fire fighters, small business owners, and owners of 500 million firearms?

    It’s a tough call, isn’t it?

      I could say something about reloading here. But I won’t.

      I will say this, though. Obama is not right. He is mentally deficient and most likely, brain-damaged due to heavy drug use. There can be no other explanation. One definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over, the same way, expecting different results.

      The harder he pushes this “legacy” legislation, the faster he slides on the ice with his drawers off.

      I think he’s just plain nuts.

      Well, God forbid we ever get to the point of a CW…and it is certainly possible….I think we have the steel on our side.

      Take a good look at half those people. They don’t understand fighting when they are uncomfortable. And yet another bunch who wouldn’t know how to handle the business end of a firearm and are likely to do themselves in.

      We have a lot of people on our side that have been comfortable with firearms almost since they were in diapers. And we don’t close our eyes when we aim.

      Having said that even an idiot can be dangerous. In fact sometimes they can be more dangerous, because they don’t have the sense to say no to ‘suicide’ orders from their progressive shepherds.

      I’m just praying we never have to see this in this country. I’m heartsick for my country’s future.

    I know I should attempt to say something wise or witty on this topic. But I won’t.

    I just want to say someone should be shot for what they did to this poor “blue dog”. Democrat or not.

    He/She looks utterly humiliated. The owner HAS to be a flaky lib/progressive woman. Sigh….. “like, you know?”

    I am old enough to remember when language and numbers used to mean something in this country. Words and numbers used to be things of honor, always to be used as if one were under oath.
 Now, in the new Liberal rubber-reality, words and numbers are merely weapons for deception.

    Weapons straight out of the Saul Alinsky playbook.

    When we have won the final battle with these Bolshevik thugs, we should put our young medical students to work performing some of those unnecessary tonsillectomies. It would be good training for all involved.

    What’s surfacing now is something that is so laughable, it’s pathetic. The “consensus” among the most liberal of democrats in both halves of government, wanting, above all else, to make sure our first “black” president has something of a crowning achievement to describe his legacy.

    Inasmuch as socialized medicine is pure anathema to what the US is all about, the liberals think it is the pinnacle of greatness to “have succeeded where others have failed” to sanctify this idiot’s presidency so he stands out in the realm of “greatness”.

    I’ll admit you have to be able to think like a liberal to understand how this could possibly be a good thing, but good thing they think it is. Not just good, but most excellent. They want him, by means of affirmative action, to be lifted “up” to the level of FDR..so that he’s not forgotten..and will always have his name in the history books, as written by Lady Huffington and Chris “Tingles” Matthews.

    This is why it’s so important to shovel on the coals and get up to ramming speed on it. But, I’m also getting a sense that it’s all backfiring, as most ill-conceived, evil plans do.

    See, I was constantly shaking my head about why all the congress critters and senators were ignoring their own constituents and the deafeningly loud voice of The People when it dawned on me….the liberals cannot have a president that THEY themselves would allow to be a FAILURE.

    See, they know he’s pathetic…they get it…but they, through their affirmative action are now in the dubious role of being his caretakers. And they cannot live with the possibility of this presidency going even farther south than Carter’s. It’s as much about their own egos as it is making sure the boy looks like he accomplished something.

    Everyone knows what it looks like when people act out of desperation. And this is what it is. To hell with everything….ramming speed. And, just like Captain Nemo on his Nautilus, it will all come to a very ugly climax. So single minded was he that he could not see the good in things. It destroyed him as it will this congress-cum-kamikaze crazed piece of legislation.

    And like Rush said, reconciliation is just a ruse. If they had the votes, they would have done so with the senate bill and it would be law today…as of January this year. It’s not and it looks like it won’t be. They have more back room deals to cut, more bribes to give out, more of the Constitution to rip up and walk on…

    But I hope, and I wish with everything I hold dear that this whole thing becomes the perfect example of an exercise in futility. So much so, that this president does indeed get his name forever in the history books to be equated with the largest of lost causes.

  9. I got a phone call from the Capital Hill proctoligist today he said to tell the blue dogs he found their heads.

    My Question to whatever decent Dems if there are any with a moral fiber that knows what is going to happen to the American People if they vote yes and which state are they going to move to .Because there will be such anger at them they had best move they will be ridiculed shunned and their children will feel the effects too they don’t seem to think the rules apply to them. But their familes will suffer as we will but theirs will be at a different level and this anger.
    When the American People find out the truth there will be no fury like this world has ever seen.
