(Democrat) Bell Council Cut Salaries 90%

From a forgiving Los Angeles Times:

Vice Mayor Teresa Jacobo [D], second from left, and Mayor Oscar Hernandez [D], third from left, will finish their terms without pay. The salaries of Councilmen George Mirabal [D] and Luis Artiga [D], far right, will be cut to $8,000 a year.

Bell council members cut salaries 90%; some will forgo pay

Council members agree to take $8,000 a year, and the mayor and vice mayor say they’ll finish their terms without pay. Meanwhile, attorney general subpoenas documents and D.A. continues its probe.

This subhead almost makes it sound like ‘cause and effect.’

City Council members in Bell unanimously agreed Monday to give up their controversial $96,000-a-year salaries and instead draw $673 a month — a 90% decrease

Mayor Oscar Hernandez and Vice Mayor Teresa Jacobo went a step further Monday and said they will finish off their terms without pay.

How noble of them! Of course very often criminals offer to go on the straight and narrow path, when the are caught red-handed.

But criminals usually also offer to give back their stolen swag. Notice that these bravos are making no such offer.

Hernandez also apologized to residents for the high salaries the city paid to administrators, a reversal from the defiant tone he struck last week.

"Since my first day as mayor, my priority has been to make Bell a city its residents can be proud to call home," he said. "I apologize that the council’s past decisions with regard to the indefensible administrative salaries have failed to meet that test." Hernandez said he will not seek another stint as mayor

Again, what a heroic gesture. Albeit, an empty one, since there is no way on Gore’s green earth Mr. Hernandez would have been reelected.

No, instead, Mr. Hernandez will retire and live on his gigantic retirement benefits.

And speaking of which, notice that there is also no mention of readjusting their outrageous pensions, which are based on their preposterous salaries.

In agreeing to sweep back their salaries, Councilmen Luis Artiga and George Mirabal put themselves on par with Lorenzo Velez, who has been paid $673 a month since he was appointed to the council last summer. Velez said he was unaware his colleagues were making so much.

Mr. Velez must not be a a part of the ‘in crowd’ yet.

Ali Saleh, a member of the Bell Assn. to Stop The Abuse said Monday that the group welcomes the salary cut. But he added, "It’s not enough. The people don’t trust them anymore. They lost complete trust from the community, and for the better of the community, they should resign."

The group also demands "a full disclosure of administrative salaries, and any retainers or project contracts provided by outside consultants, followed by a forensic audit by a neutral third party."

Saleh threatened council members with a recall effort if they did not order a forensic audit of the city’s books and disclose administrative salaries as well as contracts awarded to outside consultants

Earlier Monday, state Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown had subpoenaed hundreds of documents from Bell as part of his office’s investigation into the high salaries

These Bell City Democrats have as much to fear from Jerry Brown as the New Black Panthers had to fear from Eric Holder. (After all, we see how Mr. Brown prosecuted the ACORN folks in California.)

And speaking of party affiliations, this is yet another article about these Bell officials which somehow fails to note their party affiliation. Of course, it should go without saying that all five members of the Bell City council are members of the Democrat Party.

As always, if you scratch a Democrat, you find a looter.

It is a shame that they were not immediately booted and therefore had no further influence.
The true blame for this debacle belongs to the voters who sleepwalked long enough for the cockroaches to nearly empty the larder.

  2. proreason says:

Am I mistaken, or are all 5 names mentioned in the article Hispanic? And I thought Hispanics were noble, having been bred apart from the horrors of the Eurpoean cesspool that the US has suffered with for last 400 years. Why, it’s almost as if these nobles set out to take advantage of their own subjects taxpayers. But that can’t be, can it?

  3. fallingpianos says:

Do we know the immigration status of these council members?

  4. bousquem says:

Are the whole squad of rats going to get their record pensions also or are those going to be cut also.
