Democrats Block Bill To Hold VA Execs Accountable

From The Hill:

Senate Dems close ranks on VA

By Alexander Bolton – 05/23/14

Senate Democrats are closing ranks behind Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki and President Obama’s decision to keep him in the cabinet despite Republican calls for his ouster. As of Thursday afternoon, not a single Democratic senator had called for Shinseki’s resignation.

And Senate Democrats have been slow to embrace House-passed legislation that would give Shinseki the authority to fire senior executives. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) questioned whether legislation could address the VA’s problems, noting “most of it has to be done administratively.”

After all, when did firing a government worker ever fix a problem? Besides, the VA employees belong to the largest federal employees union of them all, AFGME, which is the largest public sector union in the country, with over 650,000 members. And they are an affiliate of the AFL-CIO.

And there are elections coming. So no heads will ever roll.

Senate leaders also expressed support for the Cabinet member on Thursday. “I think he’s doing a thorough review as he should of VA medical centers on the scheduling issue,” said Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.)…

The House GOP contrasted their action in passing a VA bill on Wednesday with what they said was inaction by Obama. The legislation would eliminate the ability of government employees to appeal firings and demotions.

The bill was approved overwhelmingly by the House and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) backed it, though most of her leadership team did not. House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (Md.), who was one of 33 Democrats to vote against the bill, warned it could undermine federal workers…

Who know they have their jobs for life, thanks to their unions. No matter how corrupt they are.

Meanwhile, from the Washington Free Beacon:

Rubio: ‘Outrageous’ and ‘Unacceptable’ that Sanders, Democrats Blocked VA Accountability Bill

May 22, 2014

Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) blasted Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) and Democratic lawmakers who blocked his bill to increase accountability in the Department of Veterans Affairs in a Fox News interview Thursday, calling it “outrageous.” …

“I just don’t understand that,” Rubio said. “It’s a very simple bill. All it says is that the secretary or any future secretary appointed by this president, a Democratic president, can fire executives in the VA who aren’t doing their jobs. Right now he can’t do that. And they blocked it. So, unfortunately, members of Congress will head home for Memorial Day and veterans will keep waiting for accountability and that’s outrageous.” …

We find all of this Democrat support for Shinseki and the VA administrators perfectly understandable, albeit reprehensible. Why would they want Shinseki or any of the top executives at the VA fired? They might talk.

Lest we forget, all of the whistleblowers who have come forward so far have been doctors. The administrators have kept silent. And the Democrats want them to stay that way. After all, we might learn that they were directed to do a lot of the things they did from DC. (Cf. the IRS scandal.)

My theory on the spin they will lay on us.

    OK….not so hard. “It’s Bush’s fault”.

    Let see how that works.

Bush started these wars, see, that resulted in lots of casualties, see, that the VA had to deal with, see, and those wars (that Bush started) created a flood of new patients into the VA that the existing infrastructure couldn’t handle.

So if it wasn’t for Bush’s stupid wars, the VA would be doing just fine. Ipso facto, Bush’s fault.

    I said that yesterday.
