Democrats Block GOP Effort To Reopen US Parks

From a cheering Associated Press:

Dems Reject House GOP Efforts to Reopen National Parks, VA

By ANDREW TAYLOR | October 1, 2013

WASHINGTON – House and Senate Democrats say they’ll reject a bid by Republicans to reopen portions of the government, including national parks and processing of claims at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

They say the entire government should be reopened, not just the parts that Republicans like. Top Senate Democrat Harry Reid said Republicans "are trying to cherry-pick some of the few parts of government that they like."

In fact, Mr. Reid called this latest proposal: “Just another wacky idea.”

And never mind that the House of Representatives has the power of the purse. It’s supposed to be their job to pick and choose programs. And never mind that Congress cherry picks what they do and don’t want to fund all the time.

The plan by House Republicans would also allow the government of Washington, D.C., to use its own taxpayer funds to provide services like garbage pickup.

And we can’t have that. And never mind the health risks. The Democrats are tying to score some political points.

The closure of national parks is among the most visible effects of the partial government shutdown. The GOP plan would reopen doors and visitors centers at iconic parks like Yosemite and Yellowstone and museums along the National Mall.

It’s the sequester all over again. The Obama administration is doing everything it can to try to make the government shutdown as painful as possible.

The only problem is, the only thing anyone will even notice is if the national parks are closed. Otherwise, nobody is going to even know the government has been shutdown. Except for the 800,000 to 1 million non-essential federal workers, who are getting a nice paid vacation right in the middle of Indian Summer.

By the way, according to federal regulations, only personnel whose jobs help to "protect life and property" are supposed to be deemed ‘essential.’ But if 800,000 to 1 million of the 2.1 million federal employees could be furloughed, does that mean the other million plus workers have jobs that protect life and property?

Somehow we don’t think so.

    “Just another wacky idea.”

    Democrats definition of The Constitution.

I would like to see the Republican House embark on a very public “Compromise-a-day” mission. In this strategy, the Republicans will present and pass a compromise CR every day. Each CR will fund a specific portion of government, at a level that is consistent with lean, efficient, Constitutional government. This will mean doing what the House should do every year, auditing the functions of each department and making a common-sense determination as to the appropriate level of funding (not just a rubber stamp increase of X percent from last year’s funding level). This will mean a lot of work for the House, but this is the job they should be doing. Each proposal should be presented in a very public way, with lots of press conferences and a relentless media campaign. They have to beat the drum and continue beating it until the democrats are terrified of voting against another compromise bill. I am reminded of Verbal Kint’s description of Keyser Soze in the film, The Usual Suspects: “Then he showed these men of will what will really was.” Do it and make us all proud!

I heard Nerobama closed down the Grand Canyon today.

I thought only God could do that.

But if Nerobama can close the Grand Canyon, why can’t he close the border?

    Or would that be cherry-picking?
