Dems Attack Romney For Quote He Never Said

From the ‘At The Races’ blog at Roll Call:

Democrats Hammer Mitt Romney for Quote He Never Said

By Abby Livingston | Tuesday Sept 4, 2012

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — From dawn to dusk on the first day of the Democratic National Convention, Democratic leaders seemingly used Mitt Romney’s own words against him in front of delegations and national television audiences.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, echoing others, described Romney tonight in his speech as “a person who said in four words, ‘Let Detroit go bankrupt.’”

Except Romney never said or wrote it.

The source of the quote is a November 2009 op-ed Romney wrote in the New York Times. The editorial Romney wrote is not nearly as definitive as that headline, “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.”

It is not news that Romney never said those words. News organizations have repeatedly pointed out for months the context of the headline.

Really? Then how come the only ‘news organization’ Roll Call can cite is a (heavily disclaimed) editorial for a local Michigan NPR affiliate?

In truth, this is the first time anyone has ever mentioned this lie in the mainstream media. If one can call a blog at Roll Call the mainstream media.

As is common practice in the newspaper industry, editors at the New York Times wrote the headline, not Romney.

And, naturally, The Times put the worst possible construction on Mr. Romney’s words. (Thanks again, ‘Paper Of Record.’)

House Budget ranking member Chris Van Hollen (Md.) also pulled out the quote last night on MSNBC and again this morning when making the rounds at meetings today. Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz used the phrase as well on CNN…

Ms. Schultz is spreading untruths? The hell you say!

By the way, this is the closest thing to a ‘fact check’ that we have seen from the mainstream media so far. (Granted, we haven’t really looked that hard.) Where are all the news media’s fact checkers poring over last night’s speeches at the Democrat convention?

    Fact checking the Democrats?

Get real. You might as well try bailing out the ocean with teaspoons.

Well, given the fact that the 73,000 seat venue for Blammo’s acceptance speech has been moved to a “more intimate” (pronounced, I meant to do that) venue of 20,000, indoors, it would seem that only the drooling mouth-breathers are left to carry the show to its inevitable conclusion.

I think, much to my surprise, that Americans are smarter overall than even I estimated. I think they are aware, even in the “gimme” states of New England, that they recognize crap when they hear it and have been hearing it now for several years.

The American people looked the new shiny over, took it for a test-drive and when they got it to their mechanic, found out what a bad deal it truly was. Now, the salespeople are desperately trying to unload this lemon and get the buyers to commit to it.

“But look, it has a built-in thermometer!”, they’ll say.

“But I don’t want it.”, will say the American.

“But, you only drove it a little, think of how great it will be when you have it long-term!”

“Um, no thanks. I’ve seen enough.”

True, some are slow to see the obvious and in some cases, I’ve done that. Not so’s I’d ever vote for a communist/socialist but, like Rush has been espousing, Americans are truly the most accommodating people in the world; Willing to give even a patented loser, freeloader like Obama the benefit of the doubt in the short-term. But when the repairman shows up late, doesn’t bring the right tools and makes a bigger mess out of the repair than the job warranted, then starts blaming the customer for the troubles with the repair, obviously, the customer will fire that so-called repairman and find another more aptly suited to the job.
