Senate Report Explores 2001 Escape by bin Laden From Afghan Mountains

By SCOTT SHANE

November 29, 2009

WASHINGTON — As President Obama vows to “finish the job” in Afghanistan by sending more troops, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has completed a detailed look back at a crucial failure early in the battle against Al Qaeda: the escape of Osama bin Laden from American forces in the Afghan mountains of Tora Bora in December 2001.

“Removing the Al Qaeda leader from the battlefield eight years ago would not have eliminated the worldwide extremist threat,” the committee’s report concludes. “But the decisions that opened the door for his escape to Pakistan allowed bin Laden to emerge as a potent symbolic figure who continues to attract a steady flow of money and inspire fanatics worldwide.”

The report, based in part on a little-noticed 2007 history of the Tora Bora episode by the military’s Special Operations Command, asserts that the consequences of not sending American troops in 2001 to block Mr. bin Laden’s escape into Pakistan are still being felt.

The report blames the lapse for “laying the foundation for today’s protracted Afghan insurgency and inflaming the internal strife now endangering Pakistan.”

The showdown at Tora Bora, a mountainous area dotted with caves in eastern Afghanistan, pitted a modest force of American Special Operations and C.I.A. officers, along with allied Afghan fighters, against a force of about 1,000 Qaeda fighters led by Mr. bin Laden.

The committee report, prepared at the request of Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, the committee’s Democratic chairman, concludes unequivocally that in mid-December 2001, Mr. bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, were at the cave complex, where Mr. bin Laden had operated previously during the fight against Soviet forces.

The new report suggests that a larger troop commitment to Afghanistan might have resulted in the demise not only of Mr. bin Laden and his deputy but also of Mullah Muhammad Omar, the leader of the Afghan Taliban. Mullah Omar, who also fled to Pakistan in 2001, has overseen the resurgence of the Taliban.

Like several previous accounts, the committee’s report blames Gen. Tommy R. Franks, then the top American commander, and Donald H. Rumsfeld, then the defense secretary, for not putting a large number of American troops there lest they fuel resentment among Afghans. General Franks, who declined to comment for the committee’s report, has at times questioned whether Mr. bin Laden was even at Tora Bora in late 2001.

The report represents unfinished political business on the part of Mr. Kerry. Before and during his unsuccessful 2004 presidential campaign, he hammered on the failure to catch Mr. bin Laden…

What a surprise that this report would say exactly what Mr. Kerry (and Mr. Obama) wanted said.

But even if this report is true (and it probably isn’t), what is preventing Mr. Obama from catching Mr. Bin Laden now?

We’ve been waiting for how many months now?

What’s his excuse?

Let’s not forget that the reason Americans didn’t go in full force were the multiple warnings from Democrats and the left in general that “We’d better not” because “that’s why the world hates Americans.”

Yes, and I just hope Bin Laden isn’t a big fan of extended primitive camping trips!

As wars go, politicizing them is never good.

But having an anti-war bedwetter for commander-in-chief is beyond horrible.

War college teaches senior officers that objectives in war must be reasonable, attainable, easily recognized and kept up to date.

Every soldier in the field knows their assigned duties. When a skid-mark-in-his-drawers president or other politician starts waxing theory and policy, you know our soldiers are in trouble. Bush 1 and 2 never told the generals anything but the main objective and then let them do their jobs.

That’s how it works…unless you have this crapfest of a government. Why it still persists that liberals make the best decisions when it comes to the battlefield is something that makes my brain catch on fire. I am reminded of the friend who thought he could “talk to the bull” and it would let him pet it. He tried and got launched several feet into the air. He still believed that he could do it….and got slammed up against the fence and earned three broken ribs. On the way to the hospital he said, in-between very labored breathing…”Maybe I ought to’ve just left it alone”.

The US Forces are faced with a clever enemy that loves to fight in the mud. And you know what they say about fighting a pig. You get really dirty and the pig likes it. So to counter that, you have to use your military abilities to take their mud away and make them hate it.

They leave behind devices to kill the soldiers…they ambush, they plot, they have endless “reasons” to fight. After all, they have little else to do. And, since it’s on the jihad dime, they all get to go to heaven, wipe allah’s ass and get 72 virgins to play with. Tell me that’s not a reason to go get your noodle blown off the top of your neck.

Additionally, the government likes to think they are the real all-knowing, all seeing OZ. The wizard…AKA Barry, wants the troops to bring home the broom of the wicked witch but he’s making them do it barefoot, with blindfolds and plugging their ears. Perhaps another way to “keep it fair” as he sees it.

No, it’s clear to me beyond any shadow of a doubt that this is a come-uppance moment. When the bully who says he can do it better is now called upon to show us what he’s got. And….big surprise…he’s got nuttin’. Big words to blame Bush….”Hey, you’re doing it wrong…blah blah blah”. So, the coach hands him the ball and he stands there and he’s gonna get sacked again and again, only the announcement will come over the PA at how he’s really skillful at covering the ball, or that he gets tackled so gracefully.

Yeah? Well my uptake is this—-

You run like a girl, obama. Come to think of it, you’re built like a girl too.

——And besides, if the Bush administration had successfully captured Bin Ladin, Barry would’ve put him up in the Lincoln bedroom when he took over.

Do you have to lie to be a Democrat or doi all Democrats just lie?

And what did they say about Clinton allowing bin Laden to escape without a scratch the many times they had him in their sights? Shhhh.
