Dems To Boost Americorp ‘Volunteers’

From an approving ABC News:

‘GIVE’ Act Would Give Back

Volunteer Programs Would Provide Jobs to Unemployed, Assist Those in Need

By YUNJI DE NIES and BRET HOVELL

March 8, 2009—In his address to Congress last month, President Barack Obama called on lawmakers to expand federally funded national service opportunities.

"To encourage a renewed spirit of national service for this and future generations, I ask this Congress to send me the bipartisan legislation that bears the name of Sen. Orrin Hatch as well as an American who has never stopped asking what he can do for his country — Sen. Edward Kennedy," the president said.

Democrats say they may be able to respond to that call by the end of this month.

The Senate is working on the Kennedy/Hatch Serve America Act of 2008, and the House is working on a similar bill, called the Generations Invigorating Volunteering and Education (GIVE) Act.

Each would more than triple the number of AmeriCorp volunteers from 75,000 to 250,000, at an estimated cost of a billion dollars a year.

House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller, D-Calf., said his committee will act on the bill this week, bring it to a vote by next week, with the goal of getting it to the president’s desk before the April recess…

Each program varies, but on average AmeriCorps volunteers earn about $1,000 a month, plus medical benefits, housing assistance and $4,725 in education awards that can be applied to future studies. The legislation would increase that education award to $5,350, the maximum Pell Grant award for the 2009-10 school year, and increase with Pell Grant increases over time.

It would also establish new programs for youth, including the Summer of Service program, in which middle and high school students could earn a $500 education award to be used for college costs. It would expand opportunities for Americans 55 or older to volunteer in both the public and non-profit sectors.

The bill would also create "green" opportunities — including a Clean Energy Corps to focus on environmental conservation. It would also create a Healthy Futures Corps, focusing on health care; a Veteran Services Corps, focusing on services for military veterans; and an Education Corps.

Previous attempts to expand AmeriCorps funding have failed since its inception in 1993. Miller said that while the investment would be substantial, with the economy in decline, this time, he believes the legislation will pass

Of course this is merely yet another thinly disguised program to funnel more taxpayer money into the Democrat Party’s foot soldiers.

But isn’t it noble?

And these additional ‘volunteers’ will only cost $1 billion dollars a year.

At least for now.

More government programs and money thrown down the socialist rathole. If the work these “volunteers” did had any actual value, somebody would be “volunteering” to pay them for it.

It reminds me of “1984”, where the meanings of words and phrases are all twisted around. Since when do “volunteers” get paid? Only in dem-speak does that make sense. I guess I’m a volunteer too, since I willingly go to work every day…

On the bright side, the evil government in 1984 was competent and efficient in it’s ruthlessness. At least the guys we are facing are just mostly a bunch of idiots. Idiots with lots of power, but idiots none-the-less.

Fat Chance, Obliviami! You stole my entire life in less than two months…and trust me, if there is anything that I will volunteer to do, it wont have a damn thing to do with this Americorps bull pucky. I actually pity the first “community organizer” foolish enough to come to my door with his list of “volunteers” for projects….

  2. Liberals Demise says:

Here is how Oblowme gets his SS Hussien Youth to do as Hitler got his youth to do his bidding. Just goes to show ya that it pays to “volunteer” for the Hussien “SS” Youth. (turn in your parents for valuable point)

    • VMAN says:

You took the words right out of my mouth. This is nothing more than Hitler youth. I gotta tell you it really puts a knot in my shorts when these creeps try to project their Fascist / Nazi ideology onto conservatives.

    • catie says:

Hitler Youth indeed. I’m going to puke. What next?

“.. as well as an American who has never stopped asking what he can do for his country — Sen. Edward Kennedy,” the president said.”

This trivel again confirms that o-blah-blah simply has no ability to convey the truth or even cares about it. More accurately he could have said .. “an alcoholic murderer who has oddly been able to keep his gov’t job for decades, who has undermined the security of the country unmeasurably, and who will never stop grabbing and maneuvering for everything he can manage to get his grubby hands on because of his position. Truly a man who has never stopped raping his country and abusing his position.”

These putz’s have no idea whatsoever of the concept or duty of public service .. public servant.

“Kennedy/Hatch Serve America Act” = “Kennedy/Hatch Screwed America Act”

“.. the House is working on a similar bill, called the Generations Invigorating Volunteering and Education (GIVE) Act.” GIVE Act = TAKE Act

“The bill would also create “green” opportunities — including a Clean Energy Corps to focus on environmental conservation. It would also create a Healthy Futures Corps, focusing on health care; a Veteran Services Corps, focusing on services for military veterans; and an Education Corps.”

Oh goody, goody gumdrop .. we’ll have this Corps, and that Corps, and maybe another that Corps …. everybody will be playing with soap bubbles and swinging on the swings singing We Are the World .. and the great o-blah-blah will be well on his way creating that world “as it should be”.

I’m wondering how many busloads of “Corps folks” we’re gonna get from the hood??? How many welfare queens (welfare families) are gonna be signin’ up for these nifty Corps jobs???
Maybe the Corps busses could have their “Corps bus stop” at the welfare offices .. it’s a familiar location for many.

    Geezuz!?!?!?!?

Sorry I just fell out of my chair laughing, oh my goodness that Barry, what a kidder!

When will the oath of loyalty to Obamy be required?

    • cjokry says:

Don’t be unpatriotic, pro. If you don’t want to pledge loyalty to der fuhrer, then just keep your non-corps job. You will not be singled out for retribution, unless you are in radio, or rant about his economic policies on television, or expose a scandalous affair, or otherwise cross The Party in a fairly serious way.

Might be fun,a beret an armband some shiny buttons and a paycheck. Just leave your brain at home. The one will do all your thinking for you.

New concepts in Communism, paid volunteer, or gulag, your choice.

  9. 12 Gauge Rage says:

Singing Ted Kennedy’s praises for all that he’s done for our country? Can somebody please enlighten me on what if anything this bloviating senator from Taxachussetts has done that’s beneficial for America?

  10. navymom says:

Stupid me! I’ve been volunteering for nothing more than the the idea that something needed to be done and I was available to to it. Just think of all the years I’ve wasted in the schools, churches, military bases over the past 30 years! If only I had waited for The Great and Mighty Obama. I could have gotten paid for all my hard “Volunteer” work! Maybe it is just me, but has the definition of the word volunteer changed? Another example of the “what’s in it for me?” mentality. They all believe the earth revolves around them.

  11. sheehanjihad says:

Would someone be kind enough to remind me to hate them in the morning please? Thanks….

  12. brad says:

And I wonder who and what will be the recipients of this work? Of course, black people, feminists, enviro-nuts, democrat (earmark) organizations, homosexuals…….

The workers will toil, while the beneficiaries will not feel guilty about watching other people work.

Just like in college. The professor has you do forced “volunteer” work for a report or class, and when you look at the list of eligible places to get credit, THEY ARE ALL DEMOCRAT PET PROJECTS! Heck even the democratic party itself is listed. (but guess what is not listed?)

  13. TracyYAddams says:

Hah, You think your time was wasted. In 1993 the goverment promised me 14725 if i went through a program. At the end of the program no one was told where to get the money or how to contact it. A friend told me they had it and when I finally got the number down. His phone blacked out showing all ink. So he had to get another one. When we went to the place to get the telephone number again, they had shut down and moved to another city. I didn’t get one thin dime. They said you had seven years to claim it. I tried for seven years to get in contact with those people. I spent my time in the waters of Bayou Savage with animal droppings going in my boots by the ways of water. If that wasn’t enough I had mosquitoes biting me at another location. The government promises a lot but that is all they are promises they break as easily as glass.
HAH!!! What this program was? AMERICORP!!!
