Dodd Wants Sick Leave For Swine Flu

From those concerned health expert professionals at Reuters:

Senator Dodd proposes paid sick leave for swine flu

Tue Nov 10, 2009

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Americans infected by the H1N1 flu virus would be guaranteed paid sick leave under emergency legislation U.S. Senator Chris Dodd plans to unveil on Tuesday in response to the swine flu pandemic.

Dodd’s measure is similar to one already introduced in the House of Representatives intended to ensure that sick employees do not spread the virus to others.

Dodd’s office said the bill he is preparing would help people who have to chose between losing a day’s pay or possibly infecting co-workers.

"The legislation is intended to slow the spread of the disease by encouraging those who have it to stay at home instead of come to work, while making it easier for parents to care for sick children or deal with school closings," the senator’s office said in a statement…

Health officials have been urging anyone with flu-like symptoms such as cough and fever to stay home, but up to 50 million Americans risk a day’s pay and perhaps their jobs if they do.

The pandemic H1N1 virus has infected millions globally, with more than 5,000 documented deaths.

Of course once we have nationalized healthcare, they’ll be in charge of what you can sick leave for – and everything else under the sun.

The pandemic H1N1 virus has infected millions globally, with more than 5,000 documented deaths.

If that is the ratio of illnesses to deaths it must not be very dangerous.

So why all the hubbub?

In a normal flu season approximately 36,000 people die. Why have we not done this long ago?

  2. Can all the recent legislation coming out of Washington lately be more worthless? Usually when people perform this bad at work, they get fired or docked pay.

Dodd would do well to plan for his retirement. He will not be missed.

  6. catie says:

Well Dodd is grasping at straws to hold on to his cushy seat. Of course we have all had H1N1 over the course of the past two weeks. The peds doc didn’t get in any vaccine until two weeks ago but my son came down with it, then my daughter, then me. Hubby was spared because he is deployed.

But, but, but I’m self employed.

catie, did they test you and your children? Here, they aren’t testing unless you are hospitalized.

Why not? Socialism doesn’t just stop at national healtcare. What’s next, paid time off to pray to the emperor?

  10. TLK says:

Long time lurker, first time commenter. Anyway…

Let’s put more punitive taxes (‘paid sick leave for H1N1’ in LiberalSpeak) on the engines of wealth in this country by having them pay for a disease that kills significantly less than the actual flu, a disease that will be used to scare everyone into accepting government control of health care. Good God, I just want to be rid of these people already.

  11. Rusty Shackleford says:

Chris Dodd, another twit with a law degree. Or is that redundant?

Yeah, he would do well to go enjoy his farm in Ireland now. Land he got through illegal means. But then, would anyone be surprised?

  12. Chuckk says:

Naked vote buying. I wouldn’t be surprised if it worked.

  13. wirenut says:

If master Dodd ever owned or operated a business for profit, he would know how stupid this proposal is. How about
master Dodd pay for this proposal from master Dodd’s income? Small business does not equal deep pockets.

  14. MinnesotaRush says:

Let’s see … 1) the o-blah-blah gang declares h1n1 a “national disaster/emergency”, 2) the numbers of sick simply are NOT there to warrant anything close to that kind of action, 3) dumba_s dodd (whose in the o-blah-blah bag) announces that folks who get the h1n1 bug will get paid to stay home, and 4) wa-laaa .. folks are calling in sick by the droves!!!

Crisis is created and dodd gets another love letter from o-blah-blah.

The real laugher is that they don’t have enough vaccine for this self created medical crisis – disaster – emergency! How’s that for government health care?

    Liars, idiots, and fools …
