Does Obama Still Believe ISIS Is A Junior Varsity Team?

From the Washington Free Beacon:

Acosta to WH: Does Obama Still Think ISIL is a ‘JV’ Team?

August 8, 2014

CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta questioned White House press secretary Josh Earnest about President Obama’s previous comment comparing ISIL to a “JV team.”

“The analogy we use around here sometimes, and I think is accurate, is if a JV team puts on Lakers uniforms that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant. I think there is a distinction between the capacity and reach of a bin Laden and a network that is actively planning major terrorist plots against the homeland versus jihadists who are engaged in various local power struggles and disputes, often sectarian,” President Obama said in a January interview with The New Yorker. After repeating the President’s “JV team” remarks, Acosta asked Earnest “Is it safe to say that ISIL – they are no longer the JV’s?”

Earnest responded, “Well, I think what is appropriate to say is that there is no question that the Laker uniforms that were worn…by the Al Qaeda leadership in Afghanistan, has been decimated and defeated in Afghanistan- there’s no question about that. And that is the result of the many decisions that were made by the president.”

Huh? We believe there are a lot of questions about how much the leadership in Afghanistan has been "decimated and defeated." (By the way, decimated just means to kill every tenth man. But even that isn’t true.) Does Mr. Earnest not follow the news?

Meanwhile, from Obama’s newest gadfly, Ron Fournier, via the Daily Caller:

Ron Fournier: Obama ‘Underestimater-In-Chief’

By Brendan Bordelon | August 10, 2014

Liberal journalist Ron Fournier slammed President Obama as the “Underestimater-in-Chief” Sunday, accusing him of failing to anticipate the power and resolve of American enemies in the Middle East and worldwide. On Fox News Sunday, the National Journal writer bemoaned the White House’s consistent underestimation of threats around the globe — particularly the Islamic State, an ultra-violent jihadist group sweeping through northern Iraq and attempting genocide.

Not to pick nits, but Mr. Fournier left out underestimating the Ebola threat in Africa and the illegal alien threat on our border and who knows what else?

“This is a president that underestimated [the Islamic State] — he called them jayvee,” Fournier said. “He underestimated what was going to happen after Libya. He underestimated Putin.”

“He’s been the Commander-in-Chief or the Underestimater-in-Chief,” he charged. “So I don’t want him to underestimate — we can’t afford the president to underestimate this threat.” “I also don’t want him to overreact,” Fournier admitted. “We’ve done that before, and it kind of got us into this mess.” “So you’re right, it’s an awfully tough thing to do,” he concluded. “I wish I was more confident that the president really understood the threat to our homeland, though.”

In reality, Mr. Obama is the biggest threat to our homeland. And, consequently, he has no problem with any of the other threats. In fact, he sees them as aiding his cause to ‘bring us down a notch.’ Of course, it will be some time before Mr. Fournier ever comes to this realization. If he ever does.

But, naturally, Mr. Obama is not taking this criticism lying down.

From Breitbart:

Obama: Bad Intelligence Behind ISIS Underestimation

August 9, 2014

Saturday from the White House South Lawn, President Barack Obama blamed "intelligence estimates" for not anticipating the speed in which ISIS would capture large sections of Iraq.

The president, who has been under harsh media criticism for likening ISIS to an Al-Qaeda JV basketball team in January said, "There is no doubt that their advance their movement over the last several of months has been more rapid than the intelligence estimates and I think the the expectation of policy makers both in and outside of Iraq." …

Thankfully, Mr. Obama has found someone else to blame.

But, hey, George Bush (and Clinton and the rest of the West) supposedly got bad intel about the WMD in Iraq? Did that let Bush off the hook? We don’t seem to remember it that way.
