Earth Doomed, Even With Carbon Curbs

From the chickens little true believers at the Washington Post:

Activists roll drums through the southern German city of Munich. European leaders voiced growing doubts on whether the world will meet a December deadline for a new climate deal as a summit here looked set to take up global warming in generalities.

New Analysis Brings Dire Forecast Of 6.3-Degree Temperature Increase

Climate researchers now predict the planet will warm by 6.3 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century even if the world’s leaders fulfill their most ambitious climate pledges, a much faster and broader scale of change than forecast just two years ago, according to a report released Thursday by the United Nations Environment Program.

The new overview of global warming research, aimed at marshaling political support for a new international climate pact by the end of the year, highlights the extent to which recent scientific assessments have outstripped the predictions issued by the Nobel Prize-winning U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007.

Robert Corell, who chairs the Climate Action Initiative and reviewed the UNEP report’s scientific findings, said the significant global temperature rise is likely to occur even if industrialized and developed countries enact every climate policy they have proposed at this point. The increase is nearly double what scientists and world policymakers have identified as the upper limit of warming the world can afford in order to avert catastrophic climate change.

"We don’t want to go there," said Corell, who collaborated with climate researchers at the Vermont-based Sustainability Institute, Massachusetts-based Ventana Systems and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to do the analysis. The team has revised its estimates since the U.N. report went to press and has posted the most recent figures at ClimateInteractive.org.

The group took the upper-range targets of nearly 200 nations’ climate policies — including U.S. cuts that would reduce domestic emissions 73 percent from 2005 levels by 2050, along with the European Union’s pledge to reduce its emissions 80 percent from 1990 levels by 2050 –and found that even under that optimistic scenario, the average global temperature is likely to warm by 6.3 degrees

Corell, who has shared these findings with the Obama administration as well as climate policymakers in China, noted that global carbon emissions are still rising. "It’s accelerating," he said. "We’re not going in the right direction."

Achim Steiner, UNEP’s executive director, told reporters at the National Press Club on Thursday that the report aims to update the IPCC’s 2007 findings to reflect both new physical evidence and a more sophisticated understanding of how Earth systems work.

"With every day that passes, the underlying trends that science has provided is . . . of such a dramatic nature that shying away from a major agreement in Copenhagen will probably be unforgivable if you look back in history at this moment," Steiner said. He noted that since 2000 alone, the average rate of melting at 30 glaciers in nine mountain ranges has doubled compared with the rate during the previous two decades.

"These are not things that are in dispute in terms of data," he said. "They are actually physically measurable."

Other findings include the fact that sea level might rise by as much as six feet by 2100 instead of 1.5 feet, as the IPCC had projected, and the Arctic may experience a sea-ice summer by 2030, rather than by the end of the century

If the United Nations and their secretaries at the Washington Post expect us to believe their alarmist claims they shouldn’t tip their hands so obviously:

The new overview of global warming research, aimed at marshaling political support for a new international climate pact by the end of the year…

This really is poor salesmanship.

If we are doomed no matter what we do, why not go out in comfort and style?

    We’re doomed….doomed I say!!

    Pass the chips and dip.

  2. proreason says:

    Gotta go back to caves.

Except of course, for the elite, who we can’t expect to suffer like the rest of us must.

And when we go back to caves, the elite, of course, muat have access to the most desirable of all of the women of the earth, because it will be up to them to repopulate the planet when they finally lead us to salvation.

  3. beautyofreason says:

Yes, perhaps we should just off ourselves to save the planet the trouble of doing so. Mandatory contraceptive use, bin limits, one-child policy, fines for the overweight, the smokers, the junk food bingers, or the overly successful. Taxes on cars, light use, non-recycled toilet paper, traditional light bulbs, etc etc.

You know where they are going with this! Once government begins to dictate the nuances of citizen’s private lives they don’t give it up easily. We must all be ‘green,’ we must save the planet – everyone must chip in – “socialism, we are all in this together” (quote from my art teacher last week).

Don’t you want to save the planet ? (dangles carrot in front of horse)

  4. VMAN says:

Yup you took my thunder. If we’re doomed no matter what then lat’s all get big honking SUVs, turn up the AC, cool down the drink and have a good time. It may make the end come a couple of years earlier but WHO CARES!!! I wish these idiots would shut up and go away. I, for one, have had enough of their pseudo science.

  5. Right of the People says:

I’m fifty-four freakin’ years old, I’m not going to be here at the end of the century neither is anyone else old enough to read this for that matter so who gives a flying fig?

I’m with Vman, crank up the AC or the heat (depending on where you live), drive that 4X4 as fast and as far as you can, crack open another tall one and kick back and live. Plus, 6 and half degrees, give me a break that still isn’t going to melt the ice come January here in Vermont or even make the slightest difference.

  6. Reality Bytes says:

Thank God! Now if we can just figure out how to keep sundown in Dec. I’d be ecstatic.

Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert. Congress said, “Someone may steal from it at night.” So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job.
Then Congress said, “How does the watchman do his job without instruction?” So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies.
Then Congress said, “How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?” So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people. One to do the studies and one to write the reports.
Then Congress said, “How are these people going to get paid?” So they created the following positions, a time keeper, and a payroll officer, then hired two people.
Then Congress said, “Who will be accountable for all of these people?” So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal Secretary.
Then Congress said, “We have had this command in operation for one Year and we are $18,000 over budget, we must cutback overall cost.”
So they laid off the night watchman.

During the Carter Adminisstration he established the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY 08-04-1977 to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. That was 32 years ago.

We’ve spent hundreds of billions of dollars, to include Obama’s new 700 billion stimulous to make the environment cleaner.

The DOE is at 24.2 billion a year aside that. 16,000 Federal Employees
100,000 a CZAR (salary for flying around, which by the way airplane flights contribute to 80% of the bad smog, I just saw on Bret FOX)

And we are turning the banking system, the insurance industry, the auto industry, and now HEALTH CARE, and now SCHOOLS?, media, and on and on.

It’s 2009. We can clone a human being, magical technoloogy, but…..
Global warming is peanuts in comparison to the threat of the muslim’s
scripture, go to every town, and those that don’t convert, burn it down.
Obama is hurry hurry hurry, but as far as our soldier’s dying and blowing up to win a war?

WHEN during his short presidency did Obama get the time to narrarate his new AUDIO version of his book DREAMS. Aside his vanity in doing it himself, can you imagine how many edits, and retakes that took? His face and voice are everywhere.

America has no president. Just a man idolizing himself in front of a mirror.
