Egypt Says Will Keep Gaza Border Open

Egypt: Gaza blockade a failure, border stays open

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt – An Egyptian security official declared the blockade of Gaza a failure Monday and said his country will keep its border with the Palestinian territory open indefinitely.

Keeping that crossing point open long term would seriously undercut Israel’s efforts to isolate and punish Gaza’s Hamas rulers and give the Palestinians back a crucial link to the outside the world.

Egypt opened its border with Gaza soon after Israel’s deadly raid on an international flotilla of activists trying to break the blockade last week…

Vice President Joe Biden said in a statement Monday the U.S. is closely consulting with Egypt and other allies to find new ways to "address the humanitarian, economic, security, and political aspects of the situation in Gaza."

He spoke in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh after meeting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak…

Oh, joy! Mr. Biden will sort this out, for sure.

The security official said a new policy must be found to end the suffering of the Palestinians, while keeping pressure on Hamas. He spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

The official said Israel is now under pressure to at least open all its land crossings with Gaza

Of course there are plenty of open border crossing into Gaza from Israel. (And, after all, the Gaza Strip is minuscule.) And (US) aid is being delivered — and illegally sold — just like always:

A Palestinian pupil walks past sacks of flour, some part of humanitarian aid by United Nations Relief and Works Agency, (UNRWA), and USAID, but now offered for sale by a vendor outside a food store in Shatie refugee camp, in Gaza City, Sunday June 6, 2010.

What Hamas, and now Egypt ,want is unrestricted borders. Sort of like we have with Mexico.

If we could ever be allowed to fully exploit the riches we have under our own country like oil, natural gas and coal, we could make the Middle East irrelevant and we wouldn’t have to worry ourselves with their petty squabbles.

Egypt is making a fortune smuggling luxury items into Palestinians who pretend to live in poverty.

It will be instructive to see if Egypt allows Palestinians to traverse the border or if the direction will be one way only. I expect the later.

For the life of me I can’t understand why Israel gave up its border duties to islamist Egypt. It should immediately cancel its border arrangements with Egypt seeing that Egypt is acting irresponsibly and dangerously to Israeli security, and Israel should immediately set up a border enclosure immediately outside of Gaza, yet before the Egyptian border, to let the Egyptians know that Israel won’t tolerate slackers at the border. Then once Israel has reestablished control, it should immediately send out its heavy construction engines and drill baby drill sixty to ninety feet straight down, and tunnel the Mediterranean Sea into that moat, and drown the rats and moles ferrying contraband from Egypt to Gaza and vice versa.
