Elijah Cummings Calls IRS Hearing ‘Un-American’

From an irony proof CBS-DC:

Issa Walks Out Of IRS Scandal Hearing As Cummings Calls Proceedings ‘Un-American’

March 5, 2014

WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – A House hearing on the IRS targeting of conservative groups erupted into an argument between Rep. Elijah Cummings and House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa just moments after former IRS official Lois Lerner invoked her Fifth Amendment right not to testify in regards to her role in the tax scrutiny scandal.

The spat began as Rep. Issa, R-Calif., stood up to adjourn the hearing, but Rep. Cummings requested to ask a “procedural question.” While making a statement, Issa asked Cummings to yield when the Maryland Democrat became incensed at the California Republican.

“Mr. Chairman, you cannot run a committee like this,” Cummings appealed. “If you will sit down and allow me to ask a question,” Cummings insisted. “I am a member of a Congress of the United States of America.”

“I am tired of this,” Cummings continued. “You cannot just have a one-sided investigation. There is absolutely something wrong with that, and it is absolutely un-American.”

Mind you, Mr. Cummings has never called the IRS’s targeting of American citizens based on their political views ‘un-American.’

“We had a hearing. It was adjourned,” Issa responded. “I gave you an opportunity to ask your questions. You had no questions.”

“I do have questions,” Cummings replied, as Issa walked out of the hearing. “Chairman, what are you hiding?”

The argument between Cummings and Issa broke out moments after IRS official Lois Lerner invoked her Fifth Amendment right not to testify about her role in singling out conservative groups for excessive tax scrutiny…

Isn’t irony ironic? Mr. Cummings has never thought to ask Ms. Lerner or the IRS what they are hiding.

I heard somewhere that some of the dems had “evidence” that the IRS was targeting a couple of liberal groups. Why they haven’t come forward with the evidence and such is interesting. I guess they haven’t had time to fabricate things so that they can claim that the IRS wasn’t biased because they looked at 2 liberal groups a little longer than usually while stonewalling and harrassing conservative groups for years.

Clearly there’s a reason why DC Comics would never pick Lois Lerner as one of Clark Kent’s BFF’s. (Or…would they?)

I have to laugh out loud and roll on the floor at Cummings remark and outburst about “What are you hiding?”. Obviously, he has the wrong script and is reading someone else’s (Issa’s) lines directed at Lerner.

Much ado about much. Lois is in a pickle. She has thoroughly painted herself into a corner and her attorney, though possibly paid by national socialist money funds, may be on her own here. Obama has refused to uphold his promise of cooperation/assistance (I’m falling over dead with not-surprise) so that (hopefully) was never part of anything the republicans took seriously.

Meanwhile, Lerner, if she testifies, becomes the scapegoat for the national socialists and will have fallen on her sword to protect captain pants-on-fire. If she takes the fifth, as she’s done today, seven times, she has now broadcast that she is definitely hiding something and is most likely the key operative in an oval-orifice-directed political shish-kebab for conservative non-profit seekers.

Occam’s Razor applies as does, “Follow the money”.

    Her silence today was deafening.

Issa walked out on his own nearing. Am I the only one who says this telegraphs mind boggling weakness?

Rep. Elijah Cummings is so angry he’s still tweeting and bragging how he told the Republicans off. Everyone was leaving and the mics were shut down already when Rep Elijah started talking, you couldn’t even hear him and everyone was leaving. They turned the mic back on, but he went into a rant.

The Republicans were mad, because Lerner’s attorney had made a deal she would talk to them, and after all that she took the 5th once again and wasted everyone’s time.

bousquem25, good point to that rumor. If there were any liberal groups being scrutinized we’d have heard about them by now.

  5. Kytross says:

The fifth amendment is extremely important and protects us from a harsh government. I am proud of Lois Lerner for using the fifth amendment to protect herself and cannot stress enough how important it is for all of us to stand up for our rights by using them whenever possible.

That being said, civil servants are employed by the citizens of America. They are as obligated to tell their employer everything that they have done while working for them, just as I am required to inform my employer of everything I do for them. The fifth amendment can only be used to protect you from criminal charges. Civil servants are still accountable for their actions to their employers. If they refuse to tell their employers what they’ve done then they’ve failed at doing their job and should be let go. No criminal charges, but an immediate release from employment.

I’ll have to give it some thought and come up with a catchier way to say it.

    • Kytross says:

No criminal charges for taking the fifth amendment. If it’s suspected that they broke the law, obviously they should be prosecuted with due process.

    • canary says:

While, I agree it was wise to take the 5th, she already delayed the investigation for over 9 months and having agreed to answer questions she refused and took the 5th again which makes her look more guilty and she is willing to be charged with contempt of court and may not be able to make another deal.

She’s bought more time until after the 2014 elections and likely the 2016 elections but she’ll get to keep getting a check and it will give the Democrats more time to keep demonizing the Tea Party to make it appear there was a reason the Obama administration investigated non-profit organizations and their members, since e-mails show an accusation that Tea Party members are dangerous “matter”.

And Issa dismissed the hearing and Cummings started ranting, and Issa did put the mic back on, but Cummings started ranting and raving how important he was instead of asking the question, so Issa cut the mic again.
