Experts Didn’t Want Drilling Moratorium

From Fox News:

Experts Say White House ‘Misrepresented’ Views to Justify Drilling Moratorium

June 11, 2010

The seven experts who advised President Obama on how to deal with offshore drilling safety after the Deepwater Horizon explosion are accusing his administration of misrepresenting their views to make it appear that they supported a six-month drilling moratorium — something they actually oppose.

The experts, recommended by the National Academy of Engineering, say Interior Secretary Ken Salazar modified their report last month, after they signed it, to include two paragraphs calling for the moratorium on existing drilling and new permits.

Salazar’s report to Obama said a panel of seven experts "peer reviewed" his recommendations, which included a six-month moratorium on permits for new wells being drilled using floating rigs and an immediate halt to drilling operations.

"None of us actually reviewed the memorandum as it is in the report," oil expert Ken Arnold told Fox News. "What was in the report at the time it was reviewed was quite a bit different in its impact to what there is now. So we wanted to distance ourselves from that recommendation."

Salazar apologized to those experts Thursday.

"The experts who are involved in crafting the report gave us their recommendation and their input and I very much appreciate those recommendations," he said. "It was not their decision on the moratorium. It was my decision and the president’s decision to move forward."

In a letter the experts sent to Salazar, they said his primary recommendation "misrepresents" their position and that halting the drilling is actually a bad idea.

The oil rig explosion occurred while the well was being shut down – a move that is much more dangerous than continuing ongoing drilling, they said.

They also said that because the floating rigs are scarce and in high demand worldwide, they will not simply sit in the Gulf idle for six months. The rigs will go to the North Sea and West Africa, possibly preventing the U.S. from being able to resume drilling for years.

They also said the best and most advanced rigs will be the first to go, leaving the U.S. with the older and potentially less safe rights operating in the nation’s coastal waters.

Man alive. Under a Republican administration this alone would be a major scandal.

But because we have one party media, this unbelievable and dangerous bit of mendacity will pass largely unnoticed.

Proof that the fascists are using the rig explosion to destroy the oil industry, and in turn, the country.

This alone is enough to impeach the President.

Even if you made the ludicrous assumption that he didn’t know about Salazar’s crime, he is still responsible.

Salazar unequivocally stated he adulterated the panel’s report. Whether Obama knew of the fraud will be more difficult to prove.

If the issue is pressed–and that’s a big “if”–Obama will likely claim ignorance and fire Salazar. It also wouldn’t surprise me if Obama completed the charade with, “This is not the Ken I used to know.”

He keeps painting us a picture but as yet the right people cannot see it.

Eventually, there has to come a saturation point where even the most deaf and blind can detect it by smell alone. And it’s fast approaching that point.

The real irony is that they, that is HE (obama) repeatedly accuses Bush of so much treachery and yet, under the law of double-speak/double standard, he feels that when he does it, that’s how business MUST get done and is therefore, acceptable.

Once/if these accusations become mainstream, I would love to hear how the holy wooden one will explain it away this time. Without a real impartial media, this seems unlikely to occur. However, more and more of the MSM is getting a sense that the Titanic is not on an even keel and that “something” might be amiss here.

Being out of touch with Mr and Ms Average, he cannot be the the outsider looking in. He cannot see himself for what he really is. He’s too close to it, perhaps. But make no mistake that more and more people see his new clothes every day.

I am amazed Obama actually made a DECISION on something, by himself. Any other time and it’s, this expert or that expert said we should do this or that, never saying I AM telling them to do this or that but, he sure did wait an awful long time to actually DO something on his own. I realize, this BoZo thinks he represents the center of the country but, I really do believe what is happening to our great country, is being done purposefully, no matter what the current spin may be.

What truely makes me sad are what we witness everyday, the withering of this once great nation, piece by piece under the guise of fairness & equality. How wonderful it will be someday when I can tell my grandchildren, I was there and was witness to the destruction of the United States of America by one single man’s ideology taught to him by communists & socialists!!

I really hope November’s outcome will make the difference we so desparately need, to preserve our culture and our heritage.

Of course this is precisely what the moron wants, no more drilling. If they move the rigs it’s gonna take an act of God to get the good ones back. On the other hand, I say screw drilling so far off shore, let’s start tapping the vast resources in ANWR. Much less chance of major environmental impact if there is an accident. The caribou and other wildlife are smart enough to get out of the way if there is a spill.

“When I heard Carville and the LSM starting to take an unusually critical tone I wondered if they just hadn’t gotten the memo that the regime’s sin of inaction on the gulf was really about the greater environmental good of destroying domestic oil production.” – 05/29/10

I guess the press finally got the memo. Still it seems like quite a few lefties really don’t agree with what we’re seeing. In a sane world, this bit would be the bad icing on the greasy cake. The coast, the jobs and those animals were sacrified on the altar of clean energy policy.

    • proreason says:

I give em zero credit for clean energy policy, in this case, and for all cases.

They don’t give a shit about clean energy. if they did, they wouldn’t be flying around in 747’s and private jets with Hummers and SUV’s in their garages and personal carbon footprints the size of steel mills.

It’s about power, and “clean energy” is just another way to grab power and control the people.

Likewise, I give em zero credit for “diversity”, “compassion”, “peace”, “fairness” and “justice”. Those are ALL cynical magic acts to sucker the rubes.

Obama is an evil psychopath just like Osama bin Laden. Obama is a bad seed. These Hitler types have no problems finding fellow psychotic followers.
Obama is failing, and the more he fails, the more his hatred for America will grow.

  7. Isn’t is riskier to shut down a producing well than to just let it keep pumping. When they shut it down they have to close a valve. Isn’t valve failure what happened at Deep Water Horizon? The pressure remains. Couldn’t continued pumping relieve the pressure. Aren’t nearby wells pumping from the same geologic formation as Deep Water Horizon?
