Fatwa Issued Against Full Body Scanners

An official fatwa from the holy men at the Fiqh Council of North America:

The statement of the FCNA on the ose [sic] of full body scanners for security at the airports and other places

(Issued on February 9, 2010)

The Full Body Security Scanners (also called Nude-body scanners) are being installed at various airports in United States and Europe. Several human rights and religious groups have expressed their concerns and disapproval of such scanners on the grounds of violation of privacy and human dignity. The Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) emphasizes that a general and public use of such scanners is against the teachings of Islam, natural law and all religions and cultures that stand for decency and modesty.

It is a violation of clear Islamic teachings that men or women be seen naked by other men and women. Islam highly emphasizes ‘haya’ (modesty) and considers it part of faith. The Qur’an has commanded the believers, both men and women, to cover their private parts. Human beings are urged to be modest in their dress. See Holy Quran, 7:26-27; 24:30-31; 33:59. Exception to this rule can be made in case of extreme necessity, such as medical treatment, to investigate a crime or in a situation of imminent danger. There must be a compelling case for the necessity and the exemption to this rule must be proportional to the demonstrated need.

FCNA fully supports the necessary measures for the safety and protection of all passengers. It is, however, deeply concerned about the use of nude body scanners for this purpose. FCNA recommends that instead of producing and displaying a picture of the body, software should be designed to produce only the picture of questionable materials on an outline of the body. Further, other technologies could be used that detect the presence of explosives without infringing on modesty as some European leaders have pointed out. FCNA appreciates the alternate provision of pat-down search (when needed) and therefore recommend to Muslims to avail this option over the nude body scanners.

And here is a real shock, the Council on American-Islamic Relations agrees with this fatwa:

CAIR Supports U.S. Muslim Religious Council Statement on Body Scanners

Posted 2/11/2010

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/10/10) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today supported a statement by a prominent group of Muslim scholars that full-body scanners being introduced in airports worldwide violate religious and privacy rights.

In a February 9 statement, the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) asked that scanner software be altered to produce only an outline of the body and urged Muslim travelers to avail themselves of alternative pat-down searches. (The term "fiqh" refers to Islamic jurisprudence.)

“We support the Fiqh Council’s statement on full-body scanners and believe that the religious and privacy rights of passengers can be respected while maintaining safety and security,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad…

So we won’t have any pious North American Muslims on airplanes anymore?

How sad.

Still no word, however, on their ruling on Valentine’s Day.

Once again, we’re treating the symptoms and not the disease. Personally, the only way I would let any of these people fly would be if they could manage it with their own arms.

Here’s a thought. Why don’t we find out all of the things that would preclude muslims from flying on our airplanes, and start doing all of them? Then we could do away with the TSA altogether.

Better yet, how about we all just fly naked?

  2. Zilla says:

Maybe Obama can just give muslims an exemption from the scanners.

  3. canary says:

The Koran specifically says if a muslim is in danger, they can hide & disguise their religious beliefs to include not stopping to praying 5 times a day.

So more likely muslims would rather die as a martyr on a plane, than die on a plane instead of allowing a fuzzy image of a figure shown on a screen. I’ve not seen anything on the news that shows what looks like a “naked” body, and they are not legally naked by any law.

Don’t muslim suicide bombers end up naked with their clothes burned off.

If Muslims are against full body scans, they must be good for the country and an effective security tool. Sign me up

  5. sheehanjihad says:

Guarantee that all muslims can get a flight that will NOT have the full body scans…nor will their luggage be searched…nothing.

The caveat being of course, that any and all flights of this nature will be ONE WAY…OUT of the country, to any muslim nation they choose.

If they refuse to be scanned for religious reasons, then they dont fly. End of story. If they are that sensitive about such nonsense…work up a deal with Amtrak where their flight ticket could be redeemed for a train ride.

Muslims are against anything animate…if it breaths, procreates, grows and can be called “living”…then muslims will do everything in their power to kill it. And every other organic substance around it.

  6. Flession says:

If there’s a problem, we could always forgo the full-body scanners and just do full head-on searches of all Muslims and their belongings. I mean, I’m not exactly thrilled about the peep show either, but if Muslims get a free pass on searches, we might as well give the Radicals the keys to the country.

Other religions have their quirky little rules, too. Christianity, for instance, is kinda stern about murdering innocent people.

Here’s an idea: how about a little fatwa against mass murder in the name of Islam?

  8. eaglewingz08 says:

This could be the greatest single safety development for airline travel in the past fifteen years. Should airlines post this fatwa in the name of inter religious brotherhood? I only hope that these devices are able to observe the takeons of the islamist terrorists who defy the fatwa.

  9. Tater Salad says:

Seems that Muslims are either blowing themselves up during the daytime or “banging away” at some poor jackass in a field at night in the name of Allah.

Allah isn’t going to like this!

“Under the given circumstances our Muslim friends should consider the prudent usage of the Camels as an effective mode of transportation
    across the seven continents”
