After Gustav, those given transportation to Baton Rogue were not happy with the temporary housing. They had to sleep on cots and eat MREs. (MREs are packaged food used by the Services. Each MRE has over 2,000 calories.) The Federal government estimated the need for the MREs. However, they ran out very early – either people were eating huge meals or they were stashing the MREs for future use. Governor Jindal asked why would anyone want to steal MREs since New Orleans has some of the most famous restaurants in the world.

My guess is that those who needed transportation have not been in the best restaurants. Stealing the MREs would save them money for months.

In addition, many wanted to know where their money was. They believed that the government owed them money – food, housing, and transportation were not enough.

One guy wanted transportation back to New Orleans while the city was shut down. He wanted to see “his property” and it was against his Civil Rights not to take him back to New Orleans. What Civil Right guarantees free transportation when you demand it? If he was so worried about his property, he could rent a car, get a ride, take a bus, take a taxi. He didn’t get to come back to New Orleans before anyone else. Once he got here, what was he going to do? The city was shut down, many buildings (including my apartment building) were closed, and the city had no electrical power. Would it then be against his Civil Rights not to give him transportation back to Baton Rogue? He was only worried about himself – not the taxes used to put up thousands of people for a week; not that some people lost their houses; not that the local government was overloaded!

Unfortunately, this mentality is too common in New Orleans. We have some of the highest taxes, worst roads, and most corrupt government. But, for those who don”t want to work, move to NOLA and have the government pay your expenses, have as more children so that you will get more – money, food stamps, energy assistance, health care, etc.

I came to New Orleans for a well-paying job. However, I would never choose this city to be where I wanted to “settle.” The government would be doing itself – and the taxpayers – a great service to sink New Orleans – it’s already below sea level.

As with Katrina, the emergency response and relief efforts are there. The difference is the political opportunity isn’t. If Bush were president, this would be Katrina II and all over the media.

Certainly, the fact that Kentucky voted for McLame by 58 to 41 couln’t have anything to do with it.

It rather appears the federal government was quite prepared as they have provided handsomely for these poor souls for 3 years. It seems the ones that were ill-prepared were individuals who had no motivation to improve their lives within a 3 year timespan.

I’d hate to sit through a little slide show presentation on what exactly these people’s plans for that long awaited smooth transition is going to be. ‘Well it’s been a long time in the making, these gosh darn contractors tried to screw us by putting down vermont marble tile, and we said, absolutely not, we will have granite or we will have nothing at all. So then I had to take them to court, and anyway, three years later we’re finally putting the finishing touches on our new mansion in the Garden District, and we’re ready to make that smooth transition.’
That or maybe when that time comes, they’re going to find their “ness” and start hitting us with seven different kinds of smoke.

Over 120 plus listings for today alone and on average, I would surmise the prices are below the national averages for comparable homes.

Proreason is right, this crap will never stop in NOLA. The eternal grifters have latched themselves on the government welfare teat and only death will ultimately dislodge them.

Why were they living in a the most famous flood zone in the country in the first place.
Why did they continually vote for corrupt local officials?
Why did they re-elect their idiot mayor, AFTER he proved himself totally incompetant?
What have they already received from you and me for the sole reason that they are morons?
After 3 years, why haven’t they done something to help themselves?
