Fidel: Socialism Doesn’t Even Work For Us

Buried in this giddy recounting of his dream date with Fidel, Jeffry Goldberg of The Atlantic reveals an interesting admission:

Fidel: ‘Cuban Model Doesn’t Even Work For Us Anymore’

Jeffrey Goldberg
Sep 8 2010

There were many odd things about my recent Havana stopover (apart from the dolphin show, which I’ll get to shortly), but one of the most unusual was Fidel Castro’s level of self-reflection. I only have limited experience with Communist autocrats (I have more experience with non-Communist autocrats) but it seemed truly striking that Castro was willing to admit that he misplayed his hand at a crucial moment in the Cuban Missile Crisis (you can read about what he said toward the end of my previous post – but he said, in so many words, that he regrets asking Khruschev to nuke the U.S.). Even more striking was something he said at lunch on the day of our first meeting…

[D]uring the generally lighthearted conversation (we had just spent three hours talking about Iran and the Middle East), I asked him if he believed the Cuban model was still something worth exporting.

"The Cuban model doesn’t even work for us anymore," he said… I asked [Ms. Sweig] to interpret this stunning statement for me. She said, "He wasn’t rejecting the ideas of the Revolution. I took it to be an acknowledgment that under ‘the Cuban model’ the state has much too big a role in the economic life of the country."

Julia pointed out that one effect of such a sentiment might be to create space for his brother, Raul, who is now president, to enact the necessary reforms in the face of what will surely be push-back from orthodox communists within the Party and the bureaucracy. Raul Castro is already loosening the state’s hold on the economy.

He recently announced, in fact, that small businesses can now operate and that foreign investors could now buy Cuban real estate.

(The joke of this new announcement, of course, is that Americans are not allowed to invest in Cuba, not because of Cuban policy, but because of American policy. In other words, Cuba is beginning to adopt the sort of economic ideas that America has long-demanded it adopt, but Americans are not allowed to participate in this free-market experiment because of our government’s hypocritical and stupidly self-defeating embargo policy. We’ll regret this, of course, when Cubans partner with Europeans and Brazilians to buy up all the best hotels).

He needs the Yankee dollar that badly.

(By the way, someone really needs to school Mr. Goldberg on the secrets of English punctuation.)

Actually Communism worked very WELL for Fidel, just as it does for every thug dictator and murderer. How many billions has he pocketed, just in American and Soviet aid to his “nation!”

oldpuppy, you have fingered the dirty little secret of Communist and marxists everywhere.

The commissars are richer than anybody in a free country, by far.

No matter how poor a country is, if you own it lock stock and barrel, you are rich beyond the dreams of anyone since emperors who ruled by divine right.

Marx may have been a true believer, and the lunatics in the world’s universities may be true believers, but you can bet that the Castro’s and Chavez’s of the world are not. Communism, in practice, is about maximizing the wealth and power of the ruler and his cronies; nothing else.

Agreed, only a lunatic narcissist Communist murderer would ideologically repent now as if to signal the implication of a naive true believer: “Well my intentions were good.”

No Fidel, you destroyed millions of lives, and personal conscience knows the truth always. Now while surfing the internet in retirement, you’re just disappointed to learn how much of a pawn YOU were.

      Great post proreason.

I love it. Communism doesn’t work… I’m sorry, can someone tell me what he meant by that?
It’s almost like Goldberg doesn’t want to hear. I picture him sitting with Castro sticking his fingers in his ears screaming “blah blah blah blah blah I CAN’T HEAR YOUUUUUU”

    I’m sorry, I can’t stop laughing…

    LOVE the parenthetical.
