First Graders Write Letters To Obama

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Wauwatosa first-graders write letters to Barack Obama

By Amy Hetzner of the Journal Sentinel

Posted: Dec. 16, 2008

President-elect Barack Obama might have consulted with hundreds of advisers over the course of his recently concluded campaign, but some Wauwatosa first-graders are hopeful they can catch his ear once he gets into office.

They think they have a secret weapon: themselves.

"He loves kids," said Gabbie Howell, a student at Jefferson Elementary School in Wauwatosa.

Gabbie and her classmates are sending letters to the incoming president, giving him words of advice and hope for his new administration that will be delivered after Inauguration Day next month.

The letter-writing project is part of a national campaign organized by Handwriting Without Tears as a way to encourage penmanship in a digital society.

Not only does it help students practice letter-forming, but they also can bring in all of their discussions about the political campaign, Jefferson school occupational therapist Terri Roller said.

"I hope that you will stop war because we need peace and quiet," wrote McKenna Tucker, one of several letters from Jefferson students that call on the president-elect to end military conflict.

The environment figured into a few missives as well. First-grader Zyan Murphy wrote: "I hope that you can clean the earth because I don’t want to step on glass."

Kamran Miszewski encouraged Obama to help give soup to the poor. Olivia Bowser wrote a letter that her teachers especially liked, asking Obama to help teachers receive more money. Hadley Jostson hopes the new president can stop people from killing animals.

A couple of students even mentioned high gas prices.

"You can tell what the parents talk about," teacher Dennyse Slawny said.

Students in teacher Angela Walsh’s class just started talking this week about what they might include in their letters.

During a brainstorming session, several brought up ending the war in Iraq. Others asked him to help people in poverty or poor health.

Keuane Gilbert passed on some advice that Obama will probably find harder to follow.

"Don’t talk to strangers," he said.

Remember when kids used to write letters to Santa this time of year?

Of course we can’t have that now, because of the separation of church and state.

— Hey, wait a minute.

The liberal indoctrination starts young, doesn’t it?

Not a single child from a conservative family in the class?

    Oh, and “high gas prices”?!

Sickening…I swear, the libs aren’t there to educate, they’re there to indoctrinate. If I had kids, I’d home school them…enough of this waste of the taxpayers’ money.

  3. proreason says:

Obvious typo “During a brainstorming session”…should have been “brainwashing”.

  4. artboyusa says:

You can’t start the indoctrination process too early. Those little brains won’t wash themselves you know.

  5. Colonel1961 says:

Don’t fear, too much. All kids think puppies are cute and everything should be free. When they grow up, they have to scoop up the shit and pay taxes – that’s when they stop being liberals…

  6. “He loves kids”…

Um, yeah, unless you’re an unborn child in an unplanned pregnancy. Then kids are “punishments” and Obama’s bang along side those who think it’s noble and just to leave them to die in closets, after unsuccessfully trying to rip them apart in the womb.

This is digusting. Homeschool, or private school, and lock and load. Don’t think they won’t be coming after your kids.

And let’s remember that Obama has pledged $10 billion for early childhood schools. I can see preschool (or even pre-preschool) becoming a national requirement. Get to them before they develop a rational mind.

Homeschooling is a way out but will it survive Obama’s presidency? Liberals have been attacking the concept in many states (in Tennessee you can’t hold a state job if you were homeschooled) even when homeschooled children show higher test scores.

They’re never going to stop themselves folks. We either fight them or get used to it comrades.

Virtual Academies are also a way out. They are public schools with exceptional curriculum and the curriculum is free. The day to day teacher is the parent with minimal interfearance from a teacher who is assigned to your student. You meet with the teacher online or at gatherings one or two times a month, you send in a sampling of the work they do every month, and all for free (you have to pay for the internet connection). When we went over Islamic history I was the teacher and I was able to teach the truth and go deaper into some of the history than the sugar coated material. I prefer to home school without intervention, but the best curriculums are expensive, so this was a way out of the huge price tag. We also get to pick our holidays and vacations. We can do school on Saturday, from 2-7, any time as long as we get the schooling in. It is a great program and one that Obama will not touch.

I just wanted to add (slightly off topic) here that as a young child (maybe 7 years old) I wrote a letter to Regan after he bombed Khadafi. I told him it was bad to kill people blah blah blah…(my mother was and probably still is a Carter fan (but she is now conservative….go figure). I got a letter back from Regan’s office..
    Dear Amber….,
Thank you so much for your kind words of support. blah blah blah.
Signed (in ink with pamphlets for kids) President Ronald Regan

As a young child, I was slightly offended that no one read my letter, but I felt awsome that the President mailed me a letter (yah, I know his office, but still!). I could not help but think he was not as terrible of a person as my mother said. From then on, I was kind of fond of President Regan. I wonder how many children will be as fond of Obama, I can not see him setting up an office to correspond with children or even sending a kind letter to a child who expressed their honest oppinion of him.

Blago’s F***ing wife, F***ing Patty will be in charge of that F***ing office. Be sure to enclose a F***ing big check if you want a F***ing response.

Nice writing program. Lia capitalizes almost every word. Yes, she’s only 6, but this is what passes for a writing program in public schools. As long as they’re writing something, it’s good! Process over content. What are the odds that anyone will take the time to teach her differently in years to come?
As wacko as the letters to Obama are, I’ll wager that there are many, many more letters from school kids headed to Iraq and Afghanistan this time of year. Bless the teachers who encourage that.

liberal taught 1st graders that can write?

    STOP WAR?

Shouldn’t the kids be writing to Hamas, Al Qaida, Iran, and Pakistan? Those are the people who START WARS.

If you want to help the starving, how about writing to African “leaders” and tell them to support their own people. Or how about teaching these dumb kids and their parents that when you feed people who have no means or ability to support themselves, you only get MORE PEOPLE who don’t have the means or ability to support themselves. That is how you end poverty.

  15. GuppyNblue says:

    1st grader question for Obama

Why did the FED just make an historical low adjustment to the interest rates yesterday? Do they understand that a reciprocal devaluation of the dollar would occur? Do they understand that the only way we finance your government programs and bailouts is by selling treasury bonds and that we just made them historically unappealing?

I’m just a little 1st grader and I’m looking forward to a long happy life.

    “Handwriting Without Tears”???
I didn’t know handwriting was so tramatic…….. these kids should forget writing about RE-forms and worry about TAX forms.
