Forget Troops, BHO To Lobby For Olympics

From an unfazed Associated Press:

Obama to make in-person pitch for 2016 Olympics

By Julie Pace, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama will travel to Denmark to support Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics, projecting the highest-ever White House profile in lobbying for the international event.

Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the president, told The Associated Press Monday morning that Obama will leave Thursday and join his wife, Michelle, in Copenhagen, where they’ll make the pitch to the International Olympic Committee. Obama would be the first U.S. president to actually appeal in person to the International Olympic Committee for an Olympics event.

The International Olympic Committee is meeting in Copenhagen to select a host city for the 2016 Summer Games. Chicago faces tough competition from Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo.

The White House later formally announced the trip, saying that Obama and his wife "will both make presentations to the IOC during Friday’s session. They will discuss why Chicago is best to host the 2016 Summer Games, and how the United States is eager to bring the world together to celebrate the ideals of the Olympic movement." The IOC is scheduled to decide the site on Friday.

While in Denmark, the statement said, Obama and his wife also will meet with Queen Margrethe and the president will meet with Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen of Denmark.

Obama, who represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate after serving in the Illinois Legislature, is a longtime supporter of Chicago’s bid. Michelle Obama is a native of the city and he considers it his adopted home town. Obama recently sent letters to selected IOC members promising a "spectacular Olympic experience for one and all."

"President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama symbolize the hope, opportunity and inspiration that makes Chicago great, and we are honored to have two of our city’s most accomplished residents leading our delegation in Copenhagen," Mayor Richard M. Daley said in a statement. "Who better to share with members of the International Olympic Committee the commitment and enthusiasm Chicago has for the Olympic and Paralympic Movement than the President and First Lady."

The president had held off on announcing a trip to Copenhagen, saying his first priority was the ongoing debate in Washington over health care reform. But aides said the president determined that his trip wouldn’t take away from that process

"I don’t think there’s an IOC member on the planet that wouldn’t love to meet your president. He’s a transformational figure in the world today," longtime IOC member Dick Pound said recently.

Obama is also mobilizing his administration on behalf of Chicago’s bid. Senior adviser Jarrett, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, will also be joining the president and first lady in Copenhagen. All are from Illinois.

They join a Chicago contingent already packed with more star power than a Hollywood red carpet. The first lady is one of the few people who rivals her husband in visibility, and she’ll be joined by talk show host Oprah Winfrey, who trails only Angelina Jolie on Forbes’ annual Celebrity 100 list, a ranking of the rich and famous’ most powerful.

Chicago is also bringing 14 Olympic and two Paralympic gold medalists, including Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Nadia Comaneci and Nastia Liukin.

As we noted on Saturday, according to a Defense Department official, General McChrystal’s hand-delivered request for more troops in Afghanistan:

[W]ill be shelved until such time that the White House is ready… It is not going to be addressed, or reviewed, or analyzed until the White House is ready to begin discussing it.

And yet Mr. Obama has the time to go to Copenhagen on Thursday to lobby for the Olympics to be held in Chicago seven years from now?

Greasing the Daley Machine is more important than protecting our soldiers?

(Not to mention the carbon footprint involved by traveling so many famous people to Denmark, when Copenhagen is to be the site of the world’s last chance ‘global warming’ conference in December)

He’s got his priorities after all. Young men dying ain’t no big thing …

Personally I’m rooting for Madrid. I was there as a teen; it was so vibrant and even back then had plenty of facilities.

What does Chicago have to offer in the summer? (I’ve never been there and have no desire to go there either.) Is it humid? Are there bugs? Are there facilities in place already?

Unfortunately the kool aid drinkers think this is a good thing, he’s such a supportive guy, you know!

(I’m still angry about the Bay Area being rejected for 2012 Olympics.)

It is now quite evident that Kid Mao or better known as Barack Obama and his commrades are in way over their heads on just about everything they put their hands on. That’s a shame because America needed a game changer but this is “way over the hill” and will put America back 100 years on the world stage.

why the permit fails to protect clean air in the Greater Chicago area… to put out far more soot and smog pollution levels than other, cleaner power plants in other states.

“More than 70,000 Chicago-area residents are rushed to area hospitals every year,” said Brian Urbaszewski, Environmental Programs Director of the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago..for asthma atacks.

Aside President Obama failing as Senator of Il. to clean the environment,
Chicago Il. crime rate tops the charts within all 50 United States. The Chicago crime is so high Obama has refused to cooperate with the federal government in making Chicago crime statistics available.

And then of course is Obama’s own writings of the dirty, poor, crime ridden, criminal, sexual offenders, and homeless people dying on the streets, to include his poking fun describing the splattered bodies of those who jump off bridges to their deaths and folkes reactions to this.

Chicago’s high winds makes it difficult for people to walk, and often have to lower their faces to breath, do to powerful wind filling nostrils.

USGS Identifies Chicago and Illinois as Top Gulf ‘Dead Zone’ Pollution Sources April 2nd 2009

For the first time, the U.S. Geological Survey has identified the top 150 polluting watersheds… the “Dead Zone” in the Gulf of Mexico. Nitrogen
and phosphorus pollution are the main causes of the dead zone, an 8,000 square mile area in the Gulf where low oxygen levels are so low that fish and other marine life suffocate.

Illinois generally and Chicago in particular are identified as the biggest sources of the nitrogen…
…to the Gulf and contributes to the Dead Zone.
The watershed containing Chicago is the top contributor of nitrogen and

phosphorus pollution, which reaches the Gulf via the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. “We’ve been working with Chicago-area sewage treatment plants to reduce their
nutrient pollution – this report justifies the importance of addressing this

form of pollution, not just for Illinois waters, but because of the serious problems it causes as far away as the Gulf of Mexico,”

said Glynnis Collins, Executive Director of Prairie Rivers Network,

    the Chicago Metropolitan Water Reclamation District does not treat its discharge to remove phosphorus and, like all but a few Illinois dischargers, does nothing to address nitrogen pollution;

this cannot go on,” said Albert Ettinger, Senior Staff Attorney at the
    Environmental Law & Policy Center.

Former Senator, now President Obama failed at cleaning up Chicago’s pollution that spills into other countries.

Marathoner calls for better breathing room in Chicago and other cities
Medill Reports by Jessi Prois Oct 14, 2008

Chicagoan Jose Nebrida carried a 25-pound American flag while running in Sunday’s marathon, but it wasn’t the weight that bogged down his performance. It was the air, he said.

Nebrida said he found himself sneezing and feeling weak and thinks air pollution is possibly the culprit. He said those health effects are most prevalent after he runs the Los Angeles and Chicago marathons, and he’s run them both 15 times.

“In mountain marathons like South Dakota and West Virginia, the pollution is so low,” Nebrida said. “We run in the forest on a trail and you’re breathing fresh air. Plus, there’s more oxygen because of the trees.”

After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Nebrida became “Captain America.” He has carried the flag in marathons in 34 states to honor the victims and heroes of that day. In his lifetime, he’s run 163 marathons.

The combination of heat and pollution have been particularly challenging for Chicago Marathon runners the past two years,

said Brian Urbaszewski, the Chicago Respiratory Health Association’s director of environmental health programs.

As a prospective Olympic site for 2016, the city is taking action to ensure healthy conditions for athletes, Urbaszewski said.

“But there are a few [power plants] that won’t be cleaned up by the time of the Olympics—in suburban areas and downstate,” he said. “The Crawford plant on the southwest side [is an] example.”

Shameful to say, I know. But with this president, the US really doesn’t deserve the opportunity and really MUSTN’T afford the crooks in the Chicago DC arrangement the opportunity to profit even more.

Michelle Obama vows to strike Olympic gold for Chicago

First lady Michelle Obama vowed Monday to “take no prisoners” as she and her husband launch an unprecedented bid for Chicago’s 2016 Olympic bid.
“It’s a battle — we’re going to win — take no prisoners,” the first lady said with a smile at a roundtable discussion with reporters in the White House State Dining Room.
She compared the intense lobbying effort to the 2008 presidential campaign, noting that in the election campaign, a lot of voters made their decision in the final days. She said members of the International Olympic Committee may do the same…
The White House confirmed Monday that President Obama will fly on Thursday to Copenhagen, Denmark, where the International Olympic Committee will be reviewing bids from several countries on Friday. It will be the first time that an American president has lobbied the IOC in this manner.
Mrs. Obama arrives in Copenhagen on Wednesday with White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and other top aides.
“What a dynamic duo they will be,” Jarrett said. “I think it will be high impact, I think their presentation will be both very personal, given that they know and love Chicago so well.”
Mrs. Obama said she and Vice President Joe Biden have been lobbying IOC members by telephone in recent days, and that she plans a packed schedule once she lands in Denmark.
“I think I’m talking to everybody,” she said of the dozens of IOC members who will decide the victor.
She will also make a formal presentation to the IOC, before the president makes his own pitch on Friday.
“We’re each going to do our own proposal,” she said. “I think we have as good a chance as any country.”
…At last week’s G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh, she sat next to the first lady of Brazil, one of the nations with a rival bid.
“I adore her but I said, ‘You know, I’m going to hug you now and then I’m going after you in Copenhagen,’ ” Mrs. Obama recalled with a laugh. “And she said, ‘You too.’ So gloves are off.

Okay, so there are concerns that Madrid won’t be considered because of 2012’s London Olympics and 2014’s Winter Olympics in Russia, though their bid was second on shortlist balloting. (Tokyo, which hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics, scored the highest of the four remaining cities, Chicago third above Rio de Janeiro.) I do hope that the selection committee takes air quality into consideration for the athlete’s sake.

I don’t think that this little in-person junket is appropriate at all. Send a video, link a videoconference. Lead by example, not by “Do as I say, not as I do.” How many millions of dollars is this circus from Washington in the name of “representing Chicago” costing taxpayers?

And yes, I’d be saying the same thing if anyone else was in office at this point in time. Times are tough, so act like they are. Stop the irresponsible spending.

  21. I lived in Atlanta during the ’96 Olympics. I pass by a rotting equestrian venue with Stone Mountain in the background almost daily.

The Olympics were a disaster!! The roads were clogged with orange barrels for months as they got ready. Corrupt Mayor Bill Campbell leased out all the city sidewalks to “a young black entrepreneur” named Munson Steed. The businesses found they did not own the sidewalks in front of their stores. Munson rented out the space to vendors by the thousand. Many of the spaces were no where near the venues. The city looked like a third world bazaar. Thousands of vendors were stuck. Munson made out like a bandit.

A drunken IOC wife had a “Do you know who I am” moment with one of Atlanta’s officers. It was not pretty. There are several videos of officers slamming women to the ground for not moving their cars quickly enough at the airport.

Then we had the park bombing. And tragedy of tragedies, Juan Antonio Samaranch did not pronounce the games “most excellent” in the final ceremonies.

Screw the Olympics. They make the host city spend an obscene amount of money to build all sorts of venues – many will be discarded afterwards. The IOC, a bunch of eurotrash dilettantes gets half the revenue. The host city gets the rest. The athletes get their pretty little medals.

Are they still pretending to be amateurs? Screw ’em.
