Freed Sailors Call Somali Pirates ‘Animals’

From those defenders of the faith at CNN:

Freed sailors: Pirates are animals

November 25, 2008

(CNN) — Five Indian sailors who were among the crew of a Japanese-owned cargo ship hijacked by pirates and held for two months before a ransom was paid said Monday their captivity was “total desperation.””I wish that no one else ever has to go through this — (hijackers) are not human but rather animals,” said Alister Fernandes, one of the sailors, at a news conference in Mumbai, India…

The Stolt Valor, a chemical tanker, was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen on September 15 and was one of several vessels hijacked in recent weeks by pirates…

The Stolt Valor and its crew of 22 — 18 of them Indian — were released after the Japanese firm that owns the ship paid a $2.5 million ransom, according to CNN-IBN, CNN’s sister network in India.

The sailors were generally in good health when they were released, but according to the five who spoke publicly Monday conditions aboard the Stolt Valor were severe and they lived for two months in continual fear of being killed by the pirates.

“We were always … all 24 hours we were on gunpoint,” said Fernandes…

Pirates have attacked more than 90 vessels off East Africa so far this year, according to the International Maritime Bureau’s Piracy Reporting Center, which monitors piracy around the world. The attacks have increased in recent weeks, the PRC says.

Kenya’s foreign minister said last week that more than $150 million has been paid to pirates around the Horn of Africa over the past 12 months, and the money is encouraging pirates to continue their attacks.

“That is why they are becoming more and more audacious in their activities,” Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula said.

At Monday’s news conference in Mumbai, the chairman of the National Union of Seafarers of India called on the United Nations to send peacekeeping patrols into the waters off Africa and to coordinate efforts already under way by various nations.

The U.S. is there, UK is there, France is there, but they are very particular about the nationality of the crew on board (hijacked ships),” said Abdul Ghani of the Indian seafarers union…

So much for the earlier reporters about how the pirates had special chefs prepare elaborate meals for their hostages.

And speaking of propaganda, note the conspicuous absence of any mention of the religious persuasion of these “pirates.”

Also notice the absence of any mention of Mr. Obama, who after all, should be especially interested in the region.

But of course Mr. Obama is the new Lincoln, not the new Jefferson.

Pirates will not be a problem. They are misunderstood poor people.

Obamy will talk to them and they will stop their protests.

  2. Liberals Demise says:

The U.N.? Might as well ask for the French to help…..samey-same in my book!! The United States makes up roughly 5% of the worlds population yet they ask us to do the work noone else has the BALLS to do. Time has come for the rest of the world to belly up to the worlds needs and grow some ACORNS of their own!!

“The U.N.? Might as well ask for the French to help…”

According to the article the French are already there. Along with the US and the UK.

  4. Liberals Demise says:

And they are doing…..what? Didn’t another ship get hijacked again today? Yes they are there….so what?

The last comment in the article hits the nail on the head:

“YES! Finally a nation that has a Navy has stepped up and done something that we are ‘not allowed’ to do unless fired upon! We need to declare ‘open season’ on any pirate vessel, no talking… just action.”

  6. sen says:

Asking the French for help? You kidding me!!?? The only time they actually sank something was an unarmed Greenpeace ship full of tofu-chomping Gaia worshiping moonbats in 1985.

What , no lemon chicken, prayer rugs and the Koran.
    Things are tough all over

“(hijackers) are not human but rather animals.”

We have been screaming that for years.

“We need to declare ‘open season’ on any pirate vessel, no talking… just action.”

Sounds like what’ll happen with Obama and his “let’s sit down and talk with them” policy.

From what little factual has been coming it seems these “pirates” are armed with nothing heavier than grenade launchers (RPG-7 I assume) and are traveling in small boats. It wouldn’t take much to arm the crews with small arms of their own which would at least even the odds—but guns are politically incorrect.

I say just do the old trick of having a “cargo ship” which is really a disguised Navy vessel (pick your favorite) and lure the pirates out to be destroyed.

  10. GuppyNblue says:

Something has been eating at me concerning these pirates. While I would personally push the button to annihilate them there is some appeal in me (that I admit it with shame).

Their world is very raw but honest as they simply take what they want. They’re extorting money from wealthy nations that should squash them with little effort. But those nations are lost in the abyss of moral relativism and humbly pay the ransom instead. They’re cowards and these pirates recognize their weakness.

From the Elder Edda: Brave men can live well anywhere. A coward dreads all things.

  11. angryredhen says:

I’m with you, Annonymoose, could you imagine how such a “cargo ship” experience would plant the seeds of doubt and fear…we’d only have to do it once in a great while to curb these creeps. And I respectfully disagree Guppy, that their world is an honest one. Extortion is dishonest, even when perpetrated against the dishonest and immoral or amoral.

  12. DEZ says:

No shame Guppy, Like most young boys I donned a pirate costume for Halloween and dreamed of high adventure on the high seas, booty and fame, but as a young boy, I also thought pirates could have honor.
Now a grown man, I know pirates have neither honor or code to live buy.
The companies paying the ransoms have found themselves between a rock and a hard place.
Lose a ship, crew and cargo, or pay up, and grieving families also bring lawsuits
Its a pay me now or pay me more later scenario, and a no win situation.
So I say fire the 32 pound cannons and send the pirates to Davy Jones locker.
Can I get a hearty ARRRRHHH, my matey?

  13. GuppyNblue says:

The honesty is in this. Danger comes from weakness and when nations decide to go limp, these kind will capitalize on it. I don’t want to get carried away but, when we take away good, evil will fill that vacuum as fast as turning off a light. The appeal is that this is so boldly being displayed like a slap in the face.

  14. Lipstick on a PIAPS says:

Man! I cannot wait until the new Pirates of Somalia ride goes up in Disney World. What a great way to profit from these pirates.

  15. DEZ says:

“Man! I cannot wait until the new Pirates of Somalia ride goes up in Disney World.”

LMAO lipstick, Wanna bet Johnny Depp stars in the next 3 films?

    Oh we gotta neme the films.;-}

  16. pinandpuller says:

Steven Segal should fire his agent-he shoulda been all over this one.

  17. DEZ says:

Great pinandpuller, now I have that Onion movie stuck in my head.

  18. 4USA says:

Want it to stop? Start placing about 15 to 20 heavily armed ex-Special Ops guys on random ships. The old way (of not arming these ships) has failed. It’s quickly becoming a lot more economical to just pay for on-board security, kill every single would-be pirate on the spot and send their bodies and their boats to the bottom. No press, no fanfare, just results. After about the first two, these cowards would find a new job and all of this would end very quickly.

Our society is sick. We’re sick from playing a game where the righteous are tolerant and the wicked are cut-throats. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Until we start understanding that no amount of niceties will prevent thugs from being thugs, we’re all going to continue to be victims. I’m tired of the left continually “negotiating” when the other side has no intention of ever coming to any agreement other than, “it’s our way, or no way.” Well, that doesn’t work for a civilized society that wants to survive. We aren’t in Utopia and this ain’t a movie. These fools are getting out of hand and it’s time for us to grow some and push these (and other) thugs back into their holes.

  19. pinandpuller says:

I saw a preview for that DEZ-is it good lol?
