Want it to stop? Start placing about 15 to 20 heavily armed ex-Special Ops guys on random ships. The old way (of not arming these ships) has failed. It’s quickly becoming a lot more economical to just pay for on-board security, kill every single would-be pirate on the spot and send their bodies and their boats to the bottom. No press, no fanfare, just results. After about the first two, these cowards would find a new job and all of this would end very quickly.

Our society is sick. We’re sick from playing a game where the righteous are tolerant and the wicked are cut-throats. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Until we start understanding that no amount of niceties will prevent thugs from being thugs, we’re all going to continue to be victims. I’m tired of the left continually “negotiating” when the other side has no intention of ever coming to any agreement other than, “it’s our way, or no way.” Well, that doesn’t work for a civilized society that wants to survive. We aren’t in Utopia and this ain’t a movie. These fools are getting out of hand and it’s time for us to grow some and push these (and other) thugs back into their holes.

The honesty is in this. Danger comes from weakness and when nations decide to go limp, these kind will capitalize on it. I don’t want to get carried away but, when we take away good, evil will fill that vacuum as fast as turning off a light. The appeal is that this is so boldly being displayed like a slap in the face.

No shame Guppy, Like most young boys I donned a pirate costume for Halloween and dreamed of high adventure on the high seas, booty and fame, but as a young boy, I also thought pirates could have honor.
Now a grown man, I know pirates have neither honor or code to live buy.
The companies paying the ransoms have found themselves between a rock and a hard place.
Lose a ship, crew and cargo, or pay up, and grieving families also bring lawsuits
Its a pay me now or pay me more later scenario, and a no win situation.
So I say fire the 32 pound cannons and send the pirates to Davy Jones locker.
Can I get a hearty ARRRRHHH, my matey?

I’m with you, Annonymoose, could you imagine how such a “cargo ship” experience would plant the seeds of doubt and fear…we’d only have to do it once in a great while to curb these creeps. And I respectfully disagree Guppy, that their world is an honest one. Extortion is dishonest, even when perpetrated against the dishonest and immoral or amoral.

Something has been eating at me concerning these pirates. While I would personally push the button to annihilate them there is some appeal in me (that I admit it with shame).

Their world is very raw but honest as they simply take what they want. They’re extorting money from wealthy nations that should squash them with little effort. But those nations are lost in the abyss of moral relativism and humbly pay the ransom instead. They’re cowards and these pirates recognize their weakness.

Kenya’s foreign minister said last week that more than $150 million has been paid to pirates around the Horn of Africa over the past 12 months, and the money is encouraging pirates to continue their attacks.

Sounds like what’ll happen with Obama and his “let’s sit down and talk with them” policy.

From what little factual has been coming it seems these “pirates” are armed with nothing heavier than grenade launchers (RPG-7 I assume) and are traveling in small boats. It wouldn’t take much to arm the crews with small arms of their own which would at least even the odds—but guns are politically incorrect.

I say just do the old trick of having a “cargo ship” which is really a disguised Navy vessel (pick your favorite) and lure the pirates out to be destroyed.
