I turned down and appointment to West Point for the same reasons, I would have had to give the Army 5 years after I graduated (1 for prep-school to prepare me for the Point and 4 more for the time there). It was a ten year commitment that as an 18 year old I wasn’t prepared to make. Plus if I had taken them up on it and flunked out, I still would have had to serve my original 3 year enlistment in it entirety. Reflecting back now with 20/20 vision, I wish I had taken them up on it as earning my degree later was a bitch while working full time.
