G Warming Will Cause 22K Murders, 180K Rapes

From the ‘Science’ section of the Los Angeles Times:

Climate change brings more crime

By Louis Sahagun | February 19, 2014

A new study broadens a notion held by the earliest criminologists: Periods of higher temperatures — on an hour-by-hour or week-to-week basis — are likely to produce more crime.

The study by Matthew Ranson of Abt Associates, a research and consulting firm in Cambridge, Mass., suggests global warming will trigger more crimes including murders and rapes over the next century, with social costs estimated to run as high as $115 billion.

Not that the LA Times never mentions who funded this study.

Between 2010 and 2099, climate change can be expected to cause an additional 22,000 murders, 180,000 cases of rape, 1.2 million aggravated assaults, 2.3 million simple assaults, 260,000 robberies, 1.3 million burglaries, 2.2 million cases of larceny and 580,000 cases of vehicle theft, the study published this week in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management says.

Wow. These numbers are even worse than what Joe Biden predicted would happen if Congress didn’t pass one of Obama’s boondoggle jobs bills.

Compared with the number of crimes expected to occur during this period in the absence of climate change, these figures represent a 2.2% increase in murders, a 3.1% increase in cases of rape, a 2.3% increase in aggravated assaults, a 1.2% increase in simple assaults, a 1% increase in robberies, a 0.9% increase in burglaries, a 0.5% increase in cases of larceny and a 0.8% increase in cases of vehicle theft, the study says.

The social costs of these increases would be roughly $38 billion to $115 billion, based on dollar values of per-offense losses established by earlier research…

Overall, crime rates for most offenses by 2090 will be 1.5% to 5.5% higher because of climate change, according to the study of crime statistics and weather data for each of the nation’s nearly 3,000 counties…

Therefore, it adds, “an immediate and permanent 4% increase in the size of the U.S. police force would be required to offset the aggregate climate-related increases in murder, manslaughter, robbery, burglary and vehicle theft likely to occur over the next century.” …

But why don’t the environmentalists see the increase in murders as a good thing?

What cha think the same company charged to go to New Yorkers homes and pay them for their urine.

The Heart Follow-up Study (HFUS) 2010, conducted by Abt SRBI for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), was a surveillance project designed to assess the NYC population’s sodium intake using

“the gold standard measurement of 24-hour urine collection”

Results were used to set the baseline sodium intake by

“NYC adults for the National Salt Reduction Initiative (NSRI)”.

The project used the NYC Community Health Survey (CHS), an annual telephone survey of approximately 10,000 adults,

New Yorkers and were offered a $100 incentive to participate.

Urine samples (aliquot of 24-hour collection and spot urine in a random subset), blood pressure, and other physical body measures

“were collected during a brief visit to the participant’s home.”

Recruitment rates for the HFUS were higher than expected

First they came for the soda pop.
Then they came for the hotdog and pretzel vendors.

really? how do they expect any credibility in their prognostications when they could not even predict that 50,000 NY ghettoites would beat down their doors to “volunteer” a jar of pee for $100 ?

      I’m in the wrong business

What kind of computer model predicts weather’s effects on criminal behavior? I’d love to see the list of variables for that calculation. I’ve been reading tea leaves and horoscopes, rolling chicken bones, and smoking sage while backwards-walking around my house in a counter-clockwise direction. That gives me as much… if not more credibility than these weasels for predicting crime stats 75 years in the future… and I predict that they’re wrong. For Pete’s sake, we all know the zombie apocalypse will make their predictions moot.
