‘Global Warming’ May Cause New Ice Age

From LiveScience:

Big Freeze: Earth Could Plunge into Sudden Ice Age

By Charles Q. Choi, Special to LiveScience

02 December 2009

In the film, "The Day After Tomorrow," the world gets gripped in ice within the span of just a few weeks. Now research now suggests an eerily similar event might indeed have occurred in the past.

Looking ahead to the future, there is no reason why such a freeze shouldn’t happen again — and in ironic fashion it could be precipitated if ongoing changes in climate force the Greenland ice sheet to suddenly melt, scientists say.

Starting roughly 12,800 years ago, the Northern Hemisphere was gripped by a chill that lasted some 1,300 years. Known by scientists as the Younger Dryas and nicknamed the "Big Freeze," geological evidence suggests it was brought on when a vast pulse of fresh water — a greater volume than all of North America’s Great Lakes combined — poured into the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.

This abrupt influx, caused when the glacial Lake Agassiz in North America burst its banks, diluted the circulation of warmer water in the North Atlantic, bringing this "conveyer belt" to a halt. Without this warming influence, evidence shows that temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere plummeted.

No time to react

Previous evidence from Greenland ice samples had suggested this abrupt shift in climate happened over the span of a decade or so. Now researchers say it surprisingly may have taken place over the course of a few months, or a year or two at most.

"That the climate system can turn on and off that quickly is extremely important," said earth system scientist Henry Mullins at Syracuse University, who did not take part in this research. "Once the tipping point is reached, there would be essentially no opportunity for humans to react."

Chilly future

Looking ahead to the future, [isotope biogeochemist William] Patterson [for the University of Saskatchewan in Canada] said there was no reason why a big freeze shouldn’t happen again.

"If the Greenland ice sheet melted suddenly it would be catastrophic," he said.

This kind of scenario would not discount evidence pointing toward global warming — after all, it leans on the Greenland ice sheet melting.

"We could say that global warming could lead to a dramatic cooling," Patterson told LiveScience. "This should serve as a further warning rather than a pass."

"People assume that we’re political, that we’re either pro-global-warming or anti-global-warming, when it’s really neither," Patterson added. "Our goal is just to understand climate."

Patterson and his colleagues detailed their findings at the European Science Foundation BOREAS conference on humans in the Arctic, in Rovaniemi, Finland.

That cinches it.

Everything is caused by ‘global warming.’

Yep, big ice age is coming, overdue in fact. Just look to the sun… Ever since the Isthmus of Panama plugged up by plate tectonics, ice ages have began cycling.

    AGW just a fraud.

Good thing I held off shaving my pet rabbits for the global warming craze!!

  3. Douglas says:

What they’re not mentioning is the fact that what caused the fresh water to enter the ocean was the breaking of the ice dam on glacial Lake Superior causing hundreds of cubic miles of fresh water to flood into the Atlantic over the course of a few days. So, if the Greenland ice sheet were to for some odd reason melt from the center out and we let a huge freshwater lake accumulate there and suddenly flood the North Atlantic we could have the same issue. If however it melts from the edge the volume of water entering wouldn’t be enough to disrupt the Atlantic Conveyer.

Earmarks of a fraud. Set the science aside. Set the politics aside. Set the personalities aside. What tells you that a fraud is fraud? Here are 10 things which all by themselves don’t make a hoax, but when you see 5 or more at once, brain active people smell a rat.

    – The problem posed is monstrous. (i.e., cancer, lose your home)
    – The cure is miraculous (this pill cures cancer, at 2% interest your home is secure)
    – It’s cheap, but the total cost is unknown (you can’t not afford this siding)
    – The proof is there for all to see (watch me drop the ball in the bucket 8 times out of 10)
    – Some details can’t be revealed (individual stock transactions are propietary, but our annual return is 15%)
    – Shills are in the audience (I don’t know how I ever got by without the sham-wow)
    – The man behind the table is wearing gold (Bernie Madoff was very well-dressed)
    – All your neighbors are doing it (3,678 sales this hour and counting)
    – You’ve never seen anything like it before (it comes clean with just a paper towel!!)
    – The opportunity expires today (call now for this limited time offer)

So, let’s examine the greatest hoax of all time, without knowing anthing about what makes the climate change:

    – “monstrous problem”: 8.5 billion people will die
    – “miraculous cure”: all we have to do is invest in windmills and roof paint
    – “cheap”: business will pay for everything
    – “proof on the table”: peer reviewed articles. “settled” science
    – “some details can’t be revealed”: sorry, we can’t reveal the data
    – “shills are in the audience”: Ed Begley
    – “gold jewelry”: Al Toad made $100M since 2001
    – “all your neigbors”: polls show….
    – “you’ve never seen anything like it”: the science is far too complex for the ordinary person
    – “act today”: just 5, 10, 20, 40 or something years until oblivion

Global warming is a solid 10 for 10.

The greatest hoax of all time

      Pro –

OT – How have you been? Have had a boat load of business and personal issues, hence my not showing up here for awhile; but wanted to point out a little “bet” we had 6 months ago…

GM vs Ford in stock price, sales and profitability.

I believe it was a 4 pack of Guinness… lol.

      I hope all is well.

    • proreason says:

      Odie, welcome back.

Remind me of the bet. If I took GM, I must have figured Obamy would wreck Ford. If so I need more time. He can’t wreck everything all at once.

(p.s.: don’t go all Tigger on us now)

    • Odie44 says:

That was the bet in a nutshell.

I am unaware of the “Tigger” comment – hope its not in reference to a certain golfer in the limelight right now …;)

    • proreason says:

Odie, just teasing. You mentioned personal issues. Tigger was a cute nickname one of Tiger’s gruesome cocktail waitresses called him. Since Steve hasn’t provided us an opportunity to comment on Tiger (who has long been my favorite athlete), I slipped it in on him.

    • Odie44 says:

      Pro –

      At my expense, great… lol.

My wife has a term for guys like Tiger, Clinton, etc… “weiner flinger’s”

I really dont understand the pathos behind cheating, just don’t.

    • beautyofreason says:

      Brilliant, Pro!

The funniest part is that your conditions is that they also apply to most late night \infomercials.

  5. White_Polluter says:

Greatest hoax of all time? Please, this has only gone on for 10 years or so.

How about the Population Bomb? Or the social security “trust fund.” Let’s not forget Global Cooling which was prevalent in the 60’s & 70’s. We should have a contest.

    • Liberals Demise says:

So …… does that mean Hildabeast is really a woman?

    • proreason says:

WP, you have a good point about the Population Bomb (into which I would lump Global Cooling) and the the associated World Hunger, but I would argue the Population Bomb lacked two essential ingredients of the Warmists scheme: “settled science” and the incredible brainstorm of the Carbon Tax, the enablement of the new world aristocracy.

You are also correct, of course about the “trust fund”, but outrageous as that is, it hardly compares to the hot-off-the-press claim that 8.5 billion people (yes, more than the current world population) will die because of global warming. How can you beat THAT !!!!! Well, you would have to be an intellectual, and postulate that the World population would grow to something like 10 billion before global warming decimates the species. Only PHDs are that brilliant.

You mean “The Day After Tomorrow” wasn’t a documentary?
