Is London’s future Islamic?
It’s the capital’s fastest growing religion, based on noble traditions and compassionate principles, yet Islam can still be tainted by mistrust and misunderstanding. Here Time Out argues that an Islamic London would be a better place.
The noise from the expectant crowd hushed to a murmur as an open-backed lorry that had driven slowly up the Mall – known since the Islamic revolution of 2021 as The Way of the Martyrs – nudged its way through the thousands gathered in Mohammad Sidique Khan Square. On the lorry, two masked guards held a young man, black hood over his head; a quiver running through the material suggested he knew what was coming.
The lorry halted by the plinth that had once held Marc Quinn’s sculpture ‘Alison Lapper Pregnant’ – long since removed as an insult to decency – and was now the place of public execution. A rope noose attached to a wire cable hung from a mechanised hoist. The main doors of what had been the National Gallery flung open and an Imam walked down the steps of the new Institute of Islamic Jurisprudence, opened only a week before by Sultan Charles, Prince of Islam and protector of the faithful in England.
The official executioner placed a stepladder against the plinth. The lorry pulled up and the young man was pushed out, then forced up the ladder. The noose was forced over the condemned man’s head. The crowd chanted ‘Allahu akbar’ (God is greater than everything).The hoist driver put his finger on a green button … Okay, not really – that’s a hysterical, right-wing nightmare of a future Muslim London: where an cruel alien creed is forced on a liberal city. A society where women are second-class citizens, same sex relationships a crime and Sharia law enforces terrible public disfigurement and death. But the reality is a long, long way from this dark vision.
For a start, Islam is not an alien religion to London. At the end of World War I the city sat at the heart of an Empire that had 160 million Muslim subjects, 80 million in India alone. London was the largest Islamic capital in the world. Forty years later and the end of the Empire, unrest and war and poverty in south Asia had lead to mass immigration to the mother country and London became a Muslim capital in another sense.
According to the 2001 census there are 607,083 Muslims living in London (310,477 men and 296,606 women). The majority of Muslims live in the east of the city and, by 2012, the Muslim Council of Britain estimates that the Muslim population of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Waltham Forest and Hackney will be 250,000. There are plans afoot (though no formal application has yet been submitted) to build the UKs biggest mosque – capable of welcoming 40,000 worshippers – near the 2012 Olympic site, a move which has prompted predictable outrage from some quarters. Consequently, Muslim disillionment with a reactionary and often ill-informed press is at an all time high.
But rather than fear the inevitable changes this will bring to London, or buy in to a racist representation of all Muslims as terrorists, we should recognise both what Islam has given this city already, and the advantages it would bring across a wide range of areas in the future.
Public health
On the surface, Islamic health doesn’t look good: the 2001 census showed that 24 per cent of Muslim women and 21 per cent of Muslim men suffered long-term illness and disability. But these are factors of social conditions rather than religion. In fact, Islam offers Londoners potential health benefits: the Muslim act of prayer is designed to keep worshippers fit, their joints supple and, at five times a day, their stomachs trim. The regular washing of the feet and hands required before prayers promotes public hygiene and would reduce the transmission of superbugs in London’s hospitals.Alcohol is haram, or forbidden, to Muslims. As London is above the national average for alcohol-related deaths in males, with 17.6 per 100,000 people (Camden has 31.6 per 100,000 males), turning all the city’s pubs into juice bars would have a massive positive effect on public health. Forbid alcohol throughout the country, and you’d avoid many of the 22,000 alcohol-related deaths and the £7.3 billion national bill for alcohol-related crime and disorder each year.
Ecology
‘The world is green and beautiful,’ said the prophet Muhammad, ‘and Allah has appointed you his guardian over it.’ The Islamic concept of halifa or trusteeship obliges Muslims to look after the natural world and Muhammad was one of the first ever environmentalists, advocating hima – areas where wildlife and forestry are protected. So we could expect more public parks under Islam, but halifa also applies to recycling: in 2006, 12,000 Muslims attended a series of sermons at the East London Mosque explaining the theological evidence for a link between behaving in an environmentally sustainable way and the Islamic faith.Education
Presently, Muslim students perform less well than non-Muslim students. In inner London, 37 per cent of 16 to 24-year-old Muslims have no qualifications (the figure for the general population of the same age and location is 25 per cent). When it comes to university education the picture is equally gloomy: 16 to 24-year-old Muslims are half as likely to have degree level or above qualification than other inner London young people.Again, social factors rather than religion have led to this state of affairs. Young Muslims in London are often of south Asian origin and therefore more likely to live in households where English is not the first language, more likely to encounter racism (both intentional and unintentional) during their education, and more likely to suffer from poverty and bad housing conditions.
But Tahir Alam, education spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain, claims Muslim children do better in their own faith schools than in the mainstream state sector: ‘Muslim schools have their own distinct ethos. They use the children’s faith and heritage as primary motivators to provide the backdrop for their education and behaviour. This ethos is consistent with the messages that children are getting at home, so it is a very coherent operation between the home and the school.’
If Islam became the dominant religion in London the same ethos could be applied to schooling across swathes of underprivileged and deprived areas of the city. This could have a revolutionary effect on educational achievement and, perhaps just as importantly, general levels of discipline and self-respect among London’s young people. While controversy rages over faith schools, there are 37 Muslim schools in London. As of 2004, only five were state schools, but there is growing pressure to bring more into the state sector which, according to Alam, will ‘help raise achievement for many sectors of the Muslim community. Many private Muslim schools are under-resourced and if they can be brought into the state sector this valuable experience can be extended to more children.’
Food
Application of halal (Arabic for ‘permissable’) dietary laws across London would free us at a stroke from our addiction to junk food, and the general adoption of a south Asian diet rich in fruit juice, rice and vegetables with occasional mutton or chicken would have a drastic effect on obesity, hyperactivity, attention deficit disorders and associated public health problems. As curry is already Londoners’ and the nation’s favourite food (see our Brick Lane food feature), it would be a relatively easy process to encourage the adoption of such a diet. Not eating would be important as well. The annual fasting month of Ramadan instils self-discipline, courtesy and social cohesion. And Londoners would benefit philosophically and physically from even a short period when we weren’t constantly ramming food into our mouths.Inter-faith relations
In an Islamic London, Christians and Jews – with their allegiance to the Bible and the Talmud – would be protected as ‘peoples of the book’. Hindus and Sikhs manage to live alongside a large Muslim population in India, so why not here? Although England has a long tradition of religious bigotry against, for instance, Roman Catholics, it is reasonable to assume that under the guiding hand of Islam a civilised accommodation could be made among faith groups in London. This welcoming stance already exists in the capital in the form of the City Circle (see Yahya Birt interview), which encourages inter-faith dialogue and open discussion.Arts
Some of the finest art in London is already Islamic. The Jameel Gallery at the V&A houses ‘ceramics, textiles, carpets, metalwork, glass and woodwork, which date from the great days of the Islamic caliphate of the eighth and ninth century’ up until the turn of the last century. Or take a free daily tour of the Addis Gallery of Islamic art (at the British Museum). London-based Nasser David Khalili, an Iranian-born Jew, has amassed what is considered to be the world’s largest private collection of Islamic art. Islamic influences have also flourished in other areas of the arts, with novelists, comedians (Birmingham-born Shazia Mirza was an instant hit on the London circuit), and music (from rappers Mecca2Medina on, to the less in-your-face Yusuf Islam).Social justice
Each Muslim is obliged to pay zakat, a welfare tax of 2.5 per cent of annual income, that is distributed to the poor and the needy. If the working population of London, 5.2 million, was predominantly Muslim this would produce approximately £3.2bn each year. More importantly, everyone would be obliged to consider those Londoners who haven’t shared their good fortune. London would become a little less cruel.Race relations
Under Islam all ethnicities are equal. Once you have submitted to Allah you are a Muslim – it doesn’t matter what colour you are. End of story.
Thank goodness. There is nothing to worry about.
Of course the article fails to note that the magazine Time Out itself would be forced out of business, since it depends upon the entertainment business which would all be closed down under the blessings of Sharia law.
And oddly enough the “comments” for this Time Out article have been turned off.
Still, how can there even be any question about the truth of this?
We can see with our own eyes what a paradise the Middle East and every other Muslim country has become.

Time out left out the summary executions, honor killings, mutilations, enslavement, debauchery, imprisonment, torture and all of the other not so good for you laws if Shaira is implemented. Time out is way out and should be counted out. What they dont realize is, no matter how pandering and slathering your compliments about islam are….if you are not muslim, you are going to be killed. If you are muslim, but not the “right muslim”, you will be the slaves to your muslim masters….then you will be killed. Time Out is a beacon of brilliant light to shine the truth on the virus of Islam. If it enters your society, it will kill you. Unless you discover the cure….and so far it seems to be genocide. nothing else works.

Yes. Let’s see, an Islamic London would:
1) See its nightclubs, theatres, and entertainment venues shut down.
2) See the BBC taken off the air and its papers shut down.
3) See its museums and historical sites destroyed.
4) See its women forced into burquas, forced out of the ballot box and workplace, and relegated to a second-class citizen status. This would, however, save money in their socialized healthcare program, as women are not allowed to be doctors and, therefore, women cannot go to doctors because unrelated men are not allowed to see women unclothed.
5) See their churches, synagouges, and other non-Muslim religious institutions destroyed and persecuted. Children of non-Muslims will be held hostage, and - if parents either refuse to convert or fail to pay ransom - receive said childrens’ dead bodies, beheaded and roasted on a plate of rice (as happened recently in the Middle East).
6) See homosexuals and adult film industry workers killed as per Shari’a law.
7) See the Queen and her family dethroned, persecuted, and most likely killed.
8) See its economy crash, leaving thousands unemployed and suffering.
9) See constant fighting between Islamic factions.
10) See its citizens lose every imaginable freedom to a tyrannical, mysoginistic, and violent religion.
But they say you get the government you deserve, and if Londoners are going to be so consumed with political correctness that they allow themselves to be overrun, it’s their fault. I’d feel for them, but they’ll only realize they needed to stand up to Islam when it’s too late.
Then who will they turn to?
But, seriously, read this. It sounds eerily like a Democratic manifesto. Control of healthcare, food, enviornment, arts, other religions (i.e., Christians and Jews), welfare taxes, and equality under the same evil facade.
It completely ignores the atrocious violations of basic human rights…especially the rights of women.
What are the people at this UK mag smoking?

I loved how the article closed: “Under Islam all ethnicities are equal. Once you have submitted to Allah you are a Muslim – it doesn’t matter what colour you are. End of story.” Tell that to the African Muslims in Darfur being butchered by their Arab Muslim brothers.

I wonder about all that fantastic health care that women would get under Sharia law since women can’t work outside the home and they can’t be touched by men outside their immediate families? Ghost OB/GYNs?

Zakat - or “welfare”… It is dishonest to use a figure of almost 3 billion pounds as a welfare benefit figure since the income for ALL citizens would fall dramitically in a Muslim State, (Even if they discover oil.) How can everyone pay 2.5% of income when there will be little or no income for the majority of British citizens? What a crock. This article should be required reading for ALL British citizens. WAKE UP AND STAND UP!!

I don’t know, the feminsts are pretty silent on issues of women’s rights when it comes to Islam. I’m sure you’d find at least one or two radical feminsts who would shrilly insist that Christianity and the Bush administration is more dangerous for her than Islam.

What is scary is that to thinking, rational people like us - this reads as a parody. For those who are kept clueless by the mindless drivel on tv and propaganda put out by the media - this will ‘enlighten’ them as to just how ‘wonderful’ Muslims/Islam is.
There is the other side which we all have commented on - that is what open, democratic societies rely on - for the other side to put out that burkas, the lack of freedom and the blatant outright lie of - if you are Muslim - well we will all just hang out together - forever. Take a look at . . .anywhere there are Muslims and anyone else - even another ‘branch’ of muslim - peace and a lack of violence DON’T EXIST. . .
You know - given the stuff going on in Iraq - I’ve been wondering lately - how great was it under Saddam (and the same for Afghanistan) - if you have a dictator or oppressive society - was/is the truth ever really known by those outside the society? If this crap (Sunni/Shia violence) has been going on forever - does that not put into question one of the hallmarks of the lunatic lefts desire to cut and run from Iraq - that the violence is the fault of the US being there? Of course our media does not do research or investigation anymore - so they never bother to even ask the question (just like the comparison of the function of life in Iraq now as opposed to prior to our invasion ).

Saddam had to use extreme brutality to keep the Sunni and Shia from killing each other (and him). Wood chippers were nowhere near the worst. Peace? Notgonnahappen. The best we can hope for is to keep them sufficiently off balance so they don’t kill us en-masse.

I get this mental image of a Cat D-9 idling away noisily. One for every mosque in North America. I wonder if maybe they shouldn’t first bulldoze places like the “Time Out” (or the New York Times) and think flip thoughts about business before pleasure.
But this is something that is going to happen -it had better happen- if we want to hang onto our way of life. And it ain’t gonna be fun. There’ll be lots of wailing and more than a little violence -which is always ugly no matter how necessary or overdue it is.
I just wish it would start sooner rather than later so we can get it the hell over with.
Because putting it off is just going to make things that much more difficult down the road.

What does this article tell us about Muslims? They are uneducated, unhealthy, don’t eat at McDonalds, and might build a couple parks (with a lot of sandboxes I imagine).
Truth is, in 1300+ years, Islamic society has not made any significant contributions to the advancement of humanity. Where is the list of Muslim breakthroughs in science, medicine, technology - or advanced thought of any kind? You’d think, with their penchant for violence, they might have at least developed some weaponry more sophisticated than exploding body parts.

That is a rather tacky-looking place. And why do they need so many minarets? The tall one is probably functional but the other two are likely camoflaged smokestacks. They are attached to the crematorium where they intend to carry out the last step in the ‘Final Solution’ - ridding themselves altogether of Jews (Mr. ApePig) and assorted other troublemakers.

It will happen, the muslims will lose, light always conquors darkness. My favorite part of the entire Lord of the Rings movies is in the Two Towers when Frodo almost kills Sam and Sam says “It’s your Sam”..well he goes on to say that it is all wrong, it is too hard, why are they fighting, because in the end, a new day will dawn and good will win. It is beautiful moment. I know our troops feel that way sometimes, “why am I here? I am doing nothing, just sitting on a base in Iraq trying not to get myself killed…” Well, it is a long road, a hard fight, but, in the end a new day will dawn and light will win and you will be the heroes of history who fought the fight and stuck to it, the ones who persevered, even when you lost desire to continue, you went on. Sometimes it takes longer and sometimes we have to sit in our trenches and wait for people to tell us to push forward, sometimes we have to sit and watch incompetant morans be given the highest awards while the people who really put the lives on the line are given a hand shake and a smile. All the while, we never know the true objective (is it just to have a launching pad to fight Iran? Is it really to create democracy and a place that loves us?) we just do not know, we do not have all of the data and intelligence reports to make those decisions. We can sit here and say they are making the wrong ones (I do that) but ultimately, we do not have the information they have, so until then, we have to hold the line, occupy that base until our orders change.

That we will have leaders who understand what we are up against. Fred may know, but he has to win. And deal with the Witch, Peloonie, Swimmer and the rest. Otherwise we will be overrun. They have stated this as their goal, in Europe, they are doing just that. It’s gonna be a long battle, with an uncertain outcome, given the almost total lack of commitment of our elected officials. Let’s hope most of the voters understand and we get people in DC who will stand up. For sure we can’t do it all by ourselves. The thought of all the ladies on this site in burkas pains me, and I sure as h— ain’t gonna bow toward Mecca. (unless to protect my eyes from a really bright flash of light)

If the last time I came away from a doctor I didn’t leave with all my parts, then I don’t believe who would see me would be a problem, because I’m fairly certain I’d never go near one again.
And I love how for each example they tell us that yes, islam is at the absolute bottom–but that’s not their fault; it’s always racism and islamophobia and a desire not to be blown up and whatever the buzzword of the moment is.
Yeah–in a more accurate vision, there wouldn’t be just one man. There’d be a lot of them getting executed, and women and children too–those that weren’t just murdered at home by their families. And there wouldn’t be a truck or a crane either–nobody intelligent enough to keep them in repair would have been left alive.

The writer(s) were trying to be glib but the truth is, that is exactly how Londonistan would be. It has happened in all regions where Islamofascists have taken power. Think Afghanistan, Iran, Malaysia, Somalia, Pakistan, Iraq or any country in the ME, (with very few exceptions).
Perhaps a better way to put it is, name one Muslim dominated country that enjoys true democracy and allows other religions to exist free of persecution..?? Waiting….. still waiting….the silence is deafening…… all I hear is the distinct sound of crickets, and nothing else.
When will the West come to the realization that the Crusades have not ended as far as the mooselimbs are concerned. They will not rest until all the “infidels” are wiped off the face of the earth. Nothing short of that ultimate goal will appease them.
Unfortunately, liberal Dhimmi’s will not acknowledge that fact until their throats are being slit by some mooselimb fanatic. Even then, some liberal asshat will proclaim we “just don’t understand them”.
I truly wish my thoughts were wrong but so far, I’ve not heard an outcry from peaceful mooselimbs that would prove my inclinations false. Until I hear that collective condemnation from mainstream followers of Islam, I shall maintain my belief in the evil I perceive from the so called “religion of peace “.

I’ve said it before, this is a sick, bastardized religion that needs to be destroyed in it’s current form. Instead of politically correct military officers, we need tough guys who don’t give a crap about the politics, only about killing and winning.
Back in the ’70s (yes, I’m dating myself here), one of the Thurmond brothers (not to be confused with the warfighting, strong leadership Thurman brothers) was TRADOC commander. He wanted a briefing on “What qualities we seek in good armor/cavalry officers” and hired a whole bunch of intellectual pin heads to determine the “qualities” of a good armor/cavalry officer.
The pinheads finished their study and were briefing the TRADOC commander. As they were finishing up, the TRADOC deputy (whose name escapes me right now) who was a gung-ho cavalry officer, walked in…just as the pinhead was concluding with “….and so, in retrospect, what does it take to be a good cavalry officer….” The deputy screamed “Gonads, big f’ing gonads”! Except he didn’t say gonads.
If asked today the reply would be “computer smart guys who are politically correct”.

The threat of Communism was a “right-wing vision” too. The concept that the Founding Fathers created this nation from Christian principles was another; likewise the fact that the Second Amendment was set for the specific purpose of putting a check on the power of an out-of-control government. And the idea that people can succeed if the government doesn’t steal as much from them, later decried as “Trickle-Down Economics”? You guessed it–”Right-Wing Vision”.

You’re right Redneck, about the “right-wing” scare tactics that libs blame everything on. The problem of course, is that right-wing predictions often come true, whereas liberal dreams such as this intellectually dishonest piece show no signs of materializing.
Since most, if not all, nations ruled by muslim law are dungheaps to all except the small royal elite, why would anyone who is being honest and rational think that muslim immigrants are going to bring anything useful to their already prosperous society? What has any muslim country given the world since the alphabet, besides terrorists and oil (which they still aren’t smart enough to extract without western help)? How can anyone think backward, barefoot, violent, oppressive, religious slaves can contribute to a civilized society?
Does the writer actually believe, somehow, that a ruling muslim majority in England wouldn’t actually carry out such executions that he parodies? They do it every doay in the middle east, why would it be any different in their adopted home?
To a lib, global warming is undeniably happening, though they cannot produce any actual proof. Yet, right before everyone’s eyes, radical muslims are stealing their society, country, and freedom to be themselves, but they refuse to see. For God’s sake, these people have actually made it a crime punishable by beheading for muslims to be depicted negatively in cartoons! Do people actaully long to be oppressed?

One of the things that Mark Steyn points out in America Alone is that the Union Jack no longer flies at Heathrow International Airport -because it has the cross of St George on it and therefore is offensive to Muslims.
So for a lot of people when they first touch down on British soil, one thing they are not going to see is the British flag flying.
And nary a shot was fired.
I feel bad for Margaret Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth: they’re both old enough to remember when England was made of much sterner stuff -hell they were part of it. They must be just heartsick to watch this.

This is such a great story, I have to keep coming back to it. Muslim London -what a lib wet dream. Of course, there are already parts of London, especially in the East End, which are pretty much “Muslimified” already but it’ll be interesting to see the whole city go “Middle Eastern” and come to resemble even more those thriving Muslim cities - Beirut, Gaza City, Baghdad - with its colorful exploding marketplaces - to which tourists flock from all around the globe and from which, occasionally, some of them might actually be released after the ransom’s paid.

I’m somewhat ambivalent. You’re giving me a choice betweeen the English and the Muslim Extremists. Dammit I’ll have to go for the English but only ‘cos warm beer is better than no beer, we thought against Nazi idealogy, then fought together but at least mainly because we beat you 2-1 in 1967 which is a much better result than One-weegie vs the best part of a dozen gaz-bottlers in 2007.
