Google Lies About Santorum ‘Google Bomb’

From the New York Times:

Dealing With an Identity Hijacked on the Online Highway

By NOAM COHEN
September 25, 2011

DESPITE his prominent position as a Republican candidate for president, Rick Santorum has lost control of his online identity. And for all the snickering online about it, his predicament stands as a chilling example of what it means to be at the mercy of the Google algorithm.

For those not in on the joke, Mr. Santorum’s torment is that when you look up his last name on Google, and the Bing search engine as well, you encounter a made-up definition of “Santorum” meant to ridicule him in a way that isn’t remotely fit to be described in a family newspaper.

For the record, this is the definition that you get as the top search result for ‘Santorum’ from Google: Santorum (san-TOR-um) n., 1. The frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the by-product of anal sex.

Mind you, as we will learn, this is the work of a homosexual militant who objects to Mr. Santorum’s views on ‘gay marriage.’ Which is a little ironic, we believe.

And Mr. Santorum has responded in a way that only holds himself up to more ridicule. He has taken aim at Google, telling the Web site Politico last week: “To have a business allow that type of filth to be purveyed through their Web site or through their system is something that they say they can’t handle, but I suspect that’s not true.”

The immediate reaction to Mr. Santorum’s statement has largely been, “How quaint. He thinks he can get Google to fix the Internet for him if he asks?” Mr. Santorum could have hurt his cause more only if he had told the company’s officials to roll up their sleeves and put a plug in the tubes carrying the offensive material.

Yes, how ridiculous of Mr. Santorum to suggest that Google could do something about this if they wanted to. Which is, in fact, exactly the case.

Lest we forget, from September 2003 until January 2009 any Google search for the phrase "miserable failure’ returned a link to the ‘Bush White House’ website as its top result. Something Google repeatedly swore for years they were helpless to stop.

That is, until after Mr. Obama’s inauguration, when suddenly searches for "miserable failure" stopped linking to the now ‘Obama White House’ website.

In fact, in their press release dated January 24, 2009, Google admitted that could have stopped such a ‘Google bomb," since they have had the ability for years. All of this, after having insisted for five and a half years that there was nothing they could do about it. (See below.)

Google had its own response to Mr. Santorum: “Google’s search results are a reflection of the content and information that is available on the Web,” the company explained helpfully, concluding with a summation of its philosophy: “We do not remove content from our search results, except in very limited cases such as illegal content and violations of our webmaster guidelines.”

The people at Google are bald faced liars. Mr. Santorum is not asking for content to be removed. But for a search algorithm to be changed. Just as Google did for Barack Obama and the search results for ‘miserable failure.’

Its advice? “Users who want content removed from the Internet should contact the webmaster of the page directly,” the company wrote. “Once the webmaster takes the page down from the Web, it will be removed from Google’s search results through our usual crawling process.”

That advice is particularly unhelpful in Mr. Santorum’s case, however, since the new definition of “Santorum” was explicitly created by Dan Savage — the editorial director of the Seattle alternative weekly The Stranger and inspiration for the anti-gay bullying campaign “It Gets Better” — to punish him for his comments in 2003 on gay marriage…

In other words, this attack is from a homosexual activist bully, who is motivated by hate. No wonder Google won’t put an end to it.

[T]here was a case similar to Mr. Santorum’s where an offensive image of Michelle Obama was dropped from the top results. A search for “Michelle Obama” led viewers to a grotesquely racist photo much reported in 2009. Google placed its own ad above those results, saying: “We assure you that the views expressed by such sites are not in any way endorsed by Google. Search engines are a reflection of the content and information that is available on the Internet.”

Again, it was the algorithm that took the hit, and washed away accountability.

That the offensive Michelle Obama photo no longer shows up today is not because of specific filtering, Google said at the time the change was detected, but rather a reflection of a better algorithm.

And we believe them, too.

But, again, this is not an apt comparison. Because the results for ‘Santorum’ just like with ‘miserable failure’ are a trick being played on Google search engine. It is not a matter of content at all.

And, again, Google was easily able to fix its ‘miserable failure’ when they wanted to. As they made abundantly clear in their post Obama inauguration press release, which we were the first (and only outlet) to point out at the time:

Detecting new "Googlebombs"

Though the spirit of change may be in the air in Washington, some things apparently stay the same. Yes, the old online prank called "Googlebombing" returned for a brief while recently, when Google searches for the words words [failure] and [cheerful achievement] returned President Obama’s biography as the top result.

You may remember this issue from a few years ago, when the query [miserable failure] led to the biography of President Bush. For some reason, all those links pointing to the Bush bio were redirected to Obama’s. Some people have asked in the past whether these results are a sign of political bias on Google’s part, and we’ve explained that this isn’t the case.

Rather than edit these prank results by hand, we developed an algorithm a few years ago to detect Googlebombs. We tend not to run it all the time, because it takes some computing power to process our entire web index and because true Googlebombs are quite rare (we joke around the Googleplex that more articles have been written about Googlebombs than there are actual examples of Googlebombs).

After we became aware of this latest Googlebomb, we re-ran our algorithm and it detected the Googlebomb for [cheerful achievement] as well as for [failure]. As a result, those search queries now return discussion about the Googlebombs rather than the original pages that were returned.

Remember, Google is the company that Obama wants to put in charge of ‘net neutrality.’ Along with MoveOn.org.

Now you know why.

It’s childish retaliation for Attaaaaaaaack Waaaaaaaaatch and all the things that people have been posting to it. They really hate it when you don’t take their anger seriously.

    Liberalism in a nutshell.

As I’ve said many ties, bulging veined queers currently set the agenda for the marxists. They make the run-of-the-mill criminal marxists look like innocent schoolkids, because the run-of-the-mill haters haven’t hated themselves their entire lives, whereas the eye popper queers have grown up knowing that they are held in contempt by much of society. People who had to learn to hate can’t really compete on the lunatic fringe with people who’s entire personality is based on self-hatred.

Barney Franks is the poster child for the phenomenon.

If you go to the library and read any of the medical journals, you will discover horrific and shocking results. The dozens and dozens of microbial parasites, viruses, spirochetes, amoebas etc isn’t even 1/2 the battle for homosexuals.

The mental battle is even worse. Suicide, sexually abusive homes, trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorders, sexually criminal behaviors, value & moral-less decisions, acceptance issues, gender identity disorders (G.I.D.) *twisted logic for behavior, authority defiant disorder, drug / alcohol abuse, self-loathing, guilt issues…ugh! It is a huge and very sad MESS! (Yet Conservatives can’t seem to win this argument either—sigh…)

A book written by a GAY MAN is called, *”Sexual Ecology–AIDS and the Destiny of Gay Men” —- is basically a summary of all the issues from the medical journals listed above. You seem to be a person that would take interest in it.

These people have 100s of very very serious problems, a true American tragedy. . .

What exists in the minds of people like Dan Savage is so rotten it defies description and all they live for is to spew it onto the rest of us.

The way to end bullying is to become a bully yourself, right Mr. Savage? The way to stop theft is to become a thief. The way to stop violence is to be become violent. And the way to end hate speech is to engage in hate speech. The Golden Rule and setting a good example are so outdated! Throwing stones from glass houses is the new hip thing to do for gay, atheist hypocrites like Savage.

One things a fact. Google is playing with FOX news the most viewed news outlet, and yet it’s game to FOX news and their news anchors.

I think you are spot on when you say Google is lying.

    Ref: http://blog.sitesell.com/sites.....-of-3.html

Google is the master of doing the side-step and is certainly inconsistent in enforcing its own guidelines. It seems to make up the rules as it goes along.

I am not voicing any political opinions here, but do agree with you about Google’s forthrightness. Google has the power to stop/change this situation. It just doesn’t want to. It’s a shame that a company who claims to be so public minded would allow our democratic process to be dragged into such a shameful pit of filth.

I wonder why liberals use words for gay acts and secretions as insults.

    ex. tea bagging and santorum.

Aside from the enjoyment of the disgust such words cause.

Could it be shame? (kudos to Pro reason).

Mr. Savage himself is quite the frothy mixture.

ANOTHER HOPELESSLY WINNABLE ARGUMENT FOR CONSERVATIVES

Why is the disgusting by-product of GAY BEHAVIOR an insult to conservatives? Doesn’t this just highlight what we already know, and gay people are admitting to themselves: gay behavior and its outcomes are disgusting, even to other gay people. If it was hetero-related, Ok, nice dig, but homo-related behavior is supposed to be an embarrassment to non-gays? —I don’t get it.

A terrific opportunity for Santorum and conservatives to point out how reviling gay activity is.
~A 100% losing argument for gays.
    ~A 100% win for conservatives.
BUT NO! Santorum FUMBLES THE BALL YET AGAIN, “I……no!, google is responsible, it’s just, no, I …..never……..algorithms…….search, me, no……google……..I blub blub blub blub!” (ugh!)

    SAVAGE HISTORY
*Dan Savage made this Santorum link about a decade ago when I was reading “The Onion” regularly in college. It didn’t make sense then either.

*Savage’s column has many ridiculous ‘logical’ arguments such as the time he complained that Wal*Mart wouldn’t photo-process gay content. Soooo wise ‘ol Dan took pictures of he and his sister kissing, wondering if Wal*Mart had any qualms about incest pictures. It was later pointed out by a reader, “Hey Dan, how is Wal*Mart supposed to know that is your sister? –is there a sign above your head saying so?” DUH!

*It seems nearly 60% of Dan Savage’s viewer mail (which seems as fake as ‘actual letters’ sent to Penthouse) are in some way, heterosexuals wondering if they are gay, experimenting with gay activity, and (surprise-surprise) actually enjoying it! –Heterosexuals that are 200% straight, have gay encounters, confused by their pleasure of it, and, of course, MUST write to a gay advice columnist and tell the whole world about it…..strange huh?
Just like cigarettes and coffee, you will get used to it over time, and eventually will really enjoy it! –after all, we are all at least a little gay inside, so just get used to it and accept all that the gay community has to offer—suspicion-free please!
