LD,

As a Trekkie, and ignoring the obvious implications of a purely socialist regime in the Trek universe, the individual to which I think you are referring is Mr Sulu....no Solo.

And....unfortunately, in recent years, George Takai, the person who portrayed the character, outing himself as a pillow-biting butt-pirate has also diminished his significance in the whole scheme of things of all things Roddenberry....

But my point stands. It's "Sulu", not "Solo".

Sorry....I had to highlight my total nerdines to make that point.

Chinnubie,

Unfortunately, you have revealed "the great secret".

Many people in the country today actually believe that all things are manageable. From our own little universe to the actual, real, great expanse itself. All you really have to do is talk to an actual astronomer to get a real sense of our true insignificance as humans.

For example, the average human will completely disbelieve that there is a massive singularity (aka "black hole") at the center of our galaxy that is several billion times the mass of our own sun. Or, that there is one of those singularities at the center of each of the billions of galaxies throughout the universe. It is just too much to grasp...that something so incredibly dense; So powerful; So out of HUMAN control that it can't possibly exist.

And yet, these same humans are ready to believe that if we don't stop driving cars right now, the world will end.

This relativistic approach to catastrophe often bothers me. I liken it to driving behind the idiot who has a 60,000 dollar brand new car who is all over the speedometer in a 55 mph zone....yet his speed ranges from 35 to 65...and when I ask them, "Why didn't you just set the cruise control at 55?" They respond with "Somebody might have pulled out in front of me suddenly".

Yup, if you want to see what's wrong with America today...just go to Walmart.

Algore and company aren't in business because the average American is intelligent.

And that's where the real crime is. If you took away the Department of Education; Tax dollars to educate our children. Removed all the obstacles that have been put in place since its inception...do we honestly believe that suddenly....without all that "control"....that children would suddenly become morons? That they would somehow be unable to open a jar of peanut butter?

That their natural curiosity and need to learn and discover would suddenly disappear?

Of course not. The obvious answer is that they would suddenly be responsible for their own discovery instead of some bureaucratic crap-fest of feel-good-ism that cripples them for life. They would once again become acquainted with that sense of victory that a lesson learned is the most satisfying event in life.

Our government, through the most EVIL entity on Earth called the Department Of Education has done more DAMAGE and more HARM by reigning in the natural instinct of children to learn and become victorious over ignorance by attempting to equalize the outcome of same.

In 100 years, I believe that the history books will show it as the darkest hour in education ever.

My father is a retired Environmental Scientist and he has told me from the very beginning that this "climate change" is complete nonsense. Needless to say I've been pulling my hair out over this since the late '80s and fortunately I'm not bald, but very frustrated.

Why can't the government just leave well enough alone!! We as a nation do sooo much better when the government isn't doing anything. Why do we insist that legislation MUST be passed in order to FEEL like we are doing something. As a people we need to start telling others that we already have enough laws and to STOP worrying about every little thing that comes along. Nine times out of ten times problems can get solved by themselves without any government involvement.

Reuters: Drafts for a meeting of the 17-nation MEF at the G8 in Italy have dropped any reference to the goal of halving C02 by 2050.

Looks like we are going to be all alone with our rear ends in the breeze on this issue. Cost would be huge, benefit ... none. Comment from a different blog:

Of Course EPA Administrator Jackson´s statement is correct.
This can be shown easily:

The USA are planning to reduce their CO2 Emissions by 20 % up to the year 2020 on the basis of 2005.

The total emission in 2006 of the US is roughly 20% of the world’s emission, with decreasing fraction because of the increase in India, China, and Russia.
Every year the atmospheric CO2 increase is about 2 ppmV/year (Mauna Loa measurement). In 15 years this sums up to 30 ppmV globally.

The part belonging to the US (20%) is therefore 6 ppmV.
The anticipated reduction of 20% amounts to 1,2 ppmV.

According to IPCC the global temperature increase is 3°C while doubling the CO2 from pre industrial 280 ppmV to 560 ppmV, which is for an increase of 280ppmV.
(Obviously the global temperature increase will be much lower if natural variations like the activity of the sun are considered)

Therefore the US are reducing the global temperature up to 2020 by
3°C x 1,2 ppmV/280 ppmV = 0,013°C !!!
(Remark: Indeed it is a factor of 1/ln2 = 1,44 higher, if instead of a linear approach the correct logarithmic dependence of temperature on CO2 concentration is assumed.)

This indeed is a negligible even immeasurable contribution.

Billions of dollars for an "immeasurable" amount of change.

I just finished watching an episode of "The Deadliest Catch" and "After the Catch."
Seems this past winter (opilio crab season) was colder than it has been in the last 30 years. The captains were talking about the Bearing Sea's ice pack moving 100 miles south in one night—unheard of!
So how's algore gonna 'splain that one away?

My stance on the global warming hoax is well-known, so I'll just say this: cap and trade is merely a new welfare base. Each of us (per capita) will be awarded carbon credits by our Federal Government. Those with less ways and means will sell their scrip to those with more ways and means, i.e., another transfer of income and wealth. And a black market will ensue (untaxed, of course) for carbon vouchers for a problem that doesn't exist. Are we dumb enough, yet?

Maybe a new national symbol.....the windmill.

I can just see the coin now.

A giant, one-eyed windmill, with little pieces of chopped up eagles on the ground around it.
