Israel And Hamas Announce ‘Ceasefire’

From a relieved Reuters:

Hamas and Israel separately announce Gaza ceasefire

By Nidal al-Mughrabi

GAZA (Reuters) – Hamas said on Sunday it would cease fire immediately along with its Islamist allies in the Gaza Strip and give Israel, which already declared a unilateral truce, a week to pull its troops out of the territory…

Troops and tanks had streamed back over the border since dawn and the army later confirmed it had begun withdrawing after a three-week war in which 10 Israeli soldiers and over 1,300 Palestinians were killed. Three Israeli civilians also died…

Hamas, whose rocket fire Israel said triggered its assault, announced its ceasefire about 12 hours after Israel’s own unilateral move. Hamas also said Israel, which launched its offensive on December 27, had a week to pull its troops from Gaza…

As scores of bodies of Hamas fighters were recovered from suddenly quiet urban battlefields on Sunday, Gaza medical officials said about 700 of the 1,300 dead were civilians

Some 17 rockets hit southern Israel after the ceasefire Olmert declared went into effect at 2 a.m. (7 p.m. EST). Israel responded with two air strikes against launching sites and medical workers said a Palestinian civilian was killed.

At least three rockets struck southern Israel after Hamas said it was halting attacks, Israeli police said

It’s yet another Obama miracle.

Of course it is only a matter of minutes before Hamas declares this a stunning victory.

  2. 12 Gauge Rage says:

Hamas will never honor the cease fire because they have no honor.

  3. Liberals Demise says:

Cease fire? Running out of UN hideouts? Hospitals got armed guards? Running out of women and children to hide behind?
Try using the media to shield yourselves!!(They’ve been giving you all good coverage for 3 wks now)

    Hamas announcing a cease-fire?

Does that mean they will cut down on the number of rockets they fire into Israel daily, while they rearm again?

    • Flession says:

      Of course!

Did you actually expect a cease fire from Hamas to mean “We’ll actually be civil, decent people and not kill your people?”

  5. artboyusa says:

Dammit!!! This is terrible. Any result that leaves Hamas intact is a “victory” as far as they’re concerned and a loss for Israel. There are two lessons we and the Israelis really ought to have learned by now. One is that the enemy will always try to fight surrounded by civilians, since dead children are a force multiplier for him. The other is that if you’re not willing to go all the way with all you’ve got, don’t even bother, since you’ll only have to keep going back.

    Don’t you just hate it when you’re right SG? From the J Post;

    Haniyeh: We have achieved victory

In a speech broadcast on Hamas television on Sunday night, Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh said the Palestinians had achieved a historical and strategic victory over Israel, and claimed that Israel’s military operation in the Gaza Strip had failed.

The Hamas leader repeated the terror organization’s demand for a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Strip, and for the opening of the border crossings.

Haniyeh promised that Hamas would give aid to Palestinian families whose relatives were killed or injured during the war, and said Israeli leaders should be tried for war crimes.

Haniyeh went on to say Hamas’s decision to declare a truce on Sunday was “wise and responsible.”

In addition, Hamas categorically states they will continue smuggling arms into Gaza to wage their “holy war”..

Following the Pali terrorist playbook to the letter.

      And this from SpeigelOnline:

‘Israel’s Supposed Victory Is Really a Defeat’ Hamas for its part claimed that Israel had failed to achieve its war aims. “God has granted us a great victory, not for one faction, or party, or area, but for our entire people,” said the top Hamas leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniya, in a televised speech.

They’re marvelously consistent, aren’t they? Or should that be incapable of change? Since the 7th century.

  7. 12 Gauge Rage says:

Hamas will only abide by the cease fire for as long as it takes them to re-arm. Never take for the truth the words from a snake’s mouth.

  8. BillK says:

    That’s just it.

The ceasefire means Hamas is running low on rockets.

As soon as that shipment of arms aid comes in from Iran, things will heat back up, I’m sure.
