Happiness Is Being Old, Male, Republican

More good news we almost missed, from LiveScience:

Happiness Is … Being Old, Male and Republican

By Robert Roy Britt, Editorial Director

Americans grow happier as they age, surveys find. And a new Pew Research Center survey shows the tendency is holding up as the economy tanks.

Happiness is a complex thing. Past studies have found that happiness is partly inherited, that Republicans are happier than Democrats, and that old men tend to be happier than old women.

And even before the economy got nasty, seniors were found to be generally happier than Baby Boomers. Some of that owes to the American Dream being lived by past generations, while Boomers work two jobs and watch the dream wither.

In times like this, it’s clear how age can have its advantages. While not all seniors are weathering the recession well, for many the impact is much less severe than it is for younger people.

Why? Many people 65 and older retired and downsized their lifestyles before the economy imploded, according to Pew analysts. Most aren’t raising kids and many are not so worried about being laid off. Loss of income can be, of course, a source of stress and displeasure. (While money doesn’t buy happiness, a study in February showed cash can help, especially when people use it to do stuff instead of buy things.)

If you’re thinking that Republicans are happy just because they perhaps make more money, that does not seem to be the case. The study that found Republicans to be happier than Democrats also showed that it held true even after adjusting for income.

It’s those age 50-64 who’ve "seen their nest eggs shrink the most and their anxieties about retirement swell the most," the Pew survey found. It also finds that younger adults (ages 18-49) "have taken the worst lumps in the job market but remain relatively upbeat about their financial future." …

It looks like another scientific question has been settled by consensus.

But really, was there ever any doubt?

A lot of folks miss the ‘W’, as do I. But, I miss Cheney as much or more. In a nutshell: a man with the courage of his convictions. In a word: unflinching.

Sorta like me, I am going in the direction that I think is right. If you get in my way , be prepared to suffer bodily injuries or worse, cause all you will do is slow me down a little bit.
I will get to where I am going.

“The study that found Republicans to be happier than Democrats also showed that it held true even after adjusting for income. ”

It all boils down to a core difference in personal philosophy. “I am in control of my own destiny and hard work is rewarded.” vs. “I’m not in control of my own destiny and work isn’t rewarded.”

If you spend your life thinking someone else is in control, you’re always going to be less happy.

I would agree Douglas, it all boils down to core philosophical beliefs. One beliefs says your have control of your future and the other says your not

    • pdsand says:

I always say that the basic difference between conservative and liberal is that conservatives love America and Americans as they are, and they look back at our history as 200 exceptional years in human history. Liberals look at our country as good on paper but tragically flawed in practice, with the potential for greatness in the future.
From that basis, you can see why democrats are never really able to enjoy life in this country, today. They would tend to be unhappy. Sort of like they used to say in movies, ‘you’d be insane to bring a child into this world, the way it is today’.

B.S. Happiness is being young, female, and Republican. Those old male Republicans are our bitches and it’s great.

I’m thinkin’ it kinda “Depends” on a lot more things .. if ya’ know what I mean.

  6. imnewatthis says:

I’ve seen this before and thought, of course if you’re old enough to be retired you’ll be happier. Not to mention you probably wouldn’t have little kids. You’re more likely to be able to spend time doing things you like and being selfish. I just hope I live long enough to retire. My poor father didn’t.
I do think that I’m happier in some ways at 48 than when I was younger. I’m extremely stressed due to work but I also take pleasure in very simple things, like just walking around the park on a nice day.

  7. proreason says:

    Well lessee.

If you are a young liberal nitwit:

    – everything is relative, so you don’t even know what is right or wrong
    – your opinions are force fed into your brain. You can’t even think for yourself
    – the approved social interactions that have been force fed into your brain are self-destructive and down deep, you know it (homosexuality, promiscuity, sex without responsibility, obamabotism, etc.)
    – you think everything must be done for you. Your life is in the governments hand’s, not your own.
    – the most important thing is to be cool, but what it takes to be cool changes day by day
    – your parents think you are a nut

But if you are an old conservative:

    – you know what is right and wrong and don’t mind saying it
    – you know there are things you can do to impact your situation and that you will come out of whatever problems you face.
    – the only outside powers you are depending on are God and your spouse, and you know they both love you
    – you gave up being cool long ago, and it’s the most free feeling in the world
    – you know your kids secretly admire you

So no surprise who the happier people are.

  8. Mr. Limbaugh talked about this once. Actually, he had a caller on that told their “conversion story” from being a democrat to being a republican and they talked about how much happier they are now. Being a democrat, they were always upset about something.

I have also seen this in my own life. My brother in law is a hardcore democrat and he is a very angry, cynical person and he is never happy. I look at me, my father, and my brothers, we are all republicans and all happy. It doesn’t take a study to know that, I guess.

  9. Petronius says:

Is it any wonder that Liberals are unhappy?

The personal burden of guilt borne by the Liberal must be crushing. The Liberal must feel tremendous guilt when he is confronted with so much social injustice, with the world’s poor, with the needy, the ragged, the starving, the downtrodden and oppressed, with the underprivileged, the unemployed, with so many victims of every imaginable category of discrimination, with the huddled masses begging for free nationalized health care, with the wretched refuse demanding affordable housing, with millions of undocumented workers in need of documents, with the millions of young females yearning for abortion on demand, with so many young males crying out for sex without responsibility, with so many hapless victims of Hurricane Katrina, with so many innocent victims of torture, with so many criminals in need of rehabilitation, with all of the moochers, freeloaders, slackers, deadbeats, vandals, and looters demanding a wider place at the public trough. When faced with so much need––and when “to each according to his need” is your only philosophy––the depth, width, and breadth of guilt felt by the Liberal must become boundless.

Clearly for many Liberals the personal burden of guilt is too much, transcending every positive value, transcending life itself, turning so many Liberals into self-haters and life-haters. Because “to each according to his need” is their creed, they cannot remain idle. They must do something. They must have new government programs; they must redistribute to the needy the surplus wealth of the privileged and more fortunate classes of citizens (i.e., expropriate at the point of a gun the property created by hard-working, prudent, and law-abiding taxpayers, employers, producers, and investors). They must have public show trials and Truth and Reconciliation Commissions to mitigate the nation’s guilt over this-that-or-the-other-thing. They must apologize endlessly to foreigners, turning the other cheek with a vengeance, wallowing in their nation’s obsequiousness.

They cannot simply accept the world as it is. They cannot accept the fact that life is sometimes hard, or that fate is sometimes tragic, or that inequality is the normal condition of mankind, or that some people are never up to the mark, or that war is sometimes hell. Since they are anti-religious, they can never pray, “Thy will be done.” They can never leave well enough alone. For the Liberal the world must always remain an ugly place, where needs and the needy are infinite, where there are too many wrongs to be made right, where inequalities always abound, where the malice/greed/racism of the hated white reactionaries is always rampant and demanding correction, and where the Liberal’s work of hope, change, power, plunder, and destruction is never accomplished. It’s a tough life, but somebody’s got to do it.

Like when Slick Willie paid reparations to the Japanese who were interned in WWII, or when the Senate passed a resolution apologizing for not passing a lynching law back in the early twentieth century. When that kinda crap is really what keeps you up at night, I’d be upset too. They just went through eight years of constant hand wringing about the Kyoto Protocols that they knew was never going to get ratified. They think Miami is going to be underwater in 20 years. They think we’re going to run out of gas to run cars and heat houses in like 20 years. I’d be miserable too if I were such a sorry sack to think like that.

    • JohnMG says:

……”They think Miami is going to be underwater in 20 years…..”

O K. Let’s think about this a minute. I mean, Miami, already. Just how bad would this be? Next up, San Francisco. Or Berzerkely, earth quakes and all. Thinkk of the potential.

    • pdsand says:

Oh but it’d be a disaster for the liberals. Mascara would be running all across this country. Some women would be upset too.

  10. Reality Bytes says:

I believe this is true. Even in his last year, my Dad could still blind side you with a wise crack. Like one time when I asked him if he’s OK with his daily routine, he said,

“You’ll have to ask Ida Knowe.”

“Ida Knowe. Who the hell is Ida Knowe?”, I asked.

“You know, the broad that’s livin’ with us. Ida Knowe.”, he replied.

    “You mean Nanni?!” I said.

In a flash, he comes back with, “I don’t know who Nanni is. All I can tell you is when I ask, “Where’s the remote or anything else, she says…

    “I Dunno Know”.

    Ya gotta love that.

  11. Right of the People says:

Liberals don’t have a clue of how to live in the “now”. They are always so worried about the future, we’re going to run out of oil, the air, water _____, insert favorite cause is too polluted, too rare, too changing, too _____________, insert favorite bugaboo. I’m not even that worried about the tax burden the slimes in congress are piling on. My only daughter is grown and doesn’t want kids so I have no grandchildren to worry about plus she and her husband live overseas so when I’m gone frigg it. Live, love laugh for tomorrow we could all be dead.
