Harken Is Impressed With Cuba’s Health System

From an unquestioning National Journal:

Sen. Tom Harkin Visits Cuba, Is Pretty Impressed With Its Public Health System

The Iowa Democrat drove for 186 miles over three days to examine the country’s health care situation.

It makes sense that as chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, Tom Harkin would want to check out how other countries are doing when it comes to public health. So he spent last week in Cuba, where he saw all sorts of things that made quite the impression on him.

Cuba is a "poor country, but they have a lower child mortality rate than ours," the Iowa Democrat said to reporters Wednesday. "Their life expectancy is now greater than ours. It’s interesting—their public health system is quite remarkable."

What is remarkable is that a US Senator is ignorant of the long established tradition of Communist countries lying about their health statistics. Look at the Soviet Union. Look at the Eastern European countries.

Once the Cold War ended, and actual healthcare statistics came out, we discovered that the Soviet and Eastern bloc healthcare systems were not paradises after all. In fact, they were hell holes. This is ‘invincible ignorance’ at its worst.

Harkin, who made a 186-mile trek over the course of three days, also cited low infection rates in Cuban hospitals and the country’s success in reducing smoking among citizens through public health campaigns.

If their smoking rate is down, it is undoubtedly because almost all of Cuba’s production of tobacco is exported for hard currency. In fact, tobacco exports are the third largest source of hard currency for Cuba, after tourism and sugar.

In reality, ‘health-minded’ Cuba has been desperately trying to boost its production and exportation of tobacco for decades now. And 2012 was its best year for cigar exports ever, with sales totally over $416 million. (We don’t have the figures for 2013 yet.)

But who cares how many die in advancing the great cause of socialism?

Sen. Tom Harkin probably went to Cuba for very personal medical reasons and gain. He had to come up with an excuse for his trip.

Cuba forces women to have abortions.

That’s exactly how they want to improve America’s statistcs – more abortion equals fewer sick children.
