Harry Reid Blames Marine Deaths On Sequester

From Fox News:

Reid raises sequester debate after deadly military training accident

March 19, 2013

Just hours after an explosion killed seven Marines in his home state, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid used the fatal training accident as an opportunity to talk about the potential impact of the sequester on military readiness.

The Senate Democratic leader initially took to the floor Tuesday to mourn the deaths of the seven Marines, killed during a training exercise at Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada.

"My thoughts are with those who are injured and of course the families of those who lost loved ones," Reid said.

But then, after explaining that the Marines were at the depot for training, Reid went on to use the tragedy as a segue to talk about the importance of canceling the automatic budget cuts known as sequester…

While using the activities at the Nevada facility as an example of critical training that would be cut, Reid did not appear to directly link the budget cuts to the deaths…

Fox News is being far too generous to Mr. Reid. Reid’s comments clearly link the accident with the tragedy.

Our transcript of his remarks:

HARRY REID: As I indicated, it was quite a big explosion. We’ll follow this news very closely. I will do whatever I can going forward to support the United States military and the families of the fallen Marines.

Mr. President, it’s very important we continue training our military, so important. But one of the things in sequester is we cut back in training and maintenance. That’s the way sequester was written. Now, the bill that’s on the floor, we hope to pass today helps that a little bit. At least in the next six months, it allows the military some degree of ability to move things around a little bit. Flexibility, we call it, and that’s good. But we have to be very vigilant. This sequester should go away. We have cut already huge amounts of money in deficit reduction. It’s just not appropriate, Mr. President, that our military can’t train and do the maintenance necessary.

These men and women, our Marines were training there in Hawthorne. And with this sequester, it’s going to cut back this stuff. I just hope everyone understands the sacrifices made by our military. They are significant, being away from home, away from families, away from their country.

Fortunately, some Marines have spoken up to correct Mr. Reid’s latest smear.

Last night, NBC’s Pentagon correspondent Jim Miklaszewski reported that Marine Corps officials have objected to Reid’s suggestion that the explosion in Hawthorne was a result of sequester cuts.

NBC News, via YouTube:

Marine Corp Officials Take Exception With Reid’s Implication Regard Hawthorne Explosion

Jim Miklaszewski: Now I can tell you, Marine Corps officials this afternoon are taking a strong exception to what Harry Reid implied. Saying that this this exercise, for example, was planned well in advance, had nothing to do with the budget cuts. There were no corners cut, and if they couldn’t afford to have all the safety precautions into place, they wouldn’t do the exercise.

And in fact, one Marine Corps official told us a short time ago that he considers this nothing but pure political posturing on the backs of these dead Marines.

But what else is new? The only real question here is why is this man still in office?

He is worse than a pathological liar. He is a vicious lunatic.

    Er … wait a minute.

    Wasn’t the sequester Nerobama’s plan?

And wasn’t it Nerobama’s idea that the military should bear the brunt of the sequester?

And wasn’t it Harry Reid who blocked a Republican bill that would have given Nerobama discretion in allocating sequestration cuts?

Harry Reid proves the thesis for term limits.

At least Harry Reid is accepting the blame for those U.S. Marines deaths.

Not so fast there, as for he is squarely laying this monster at the Republicans feet.
This POS has no morals or scruples.
May he sit on the “Ted Kennedy” bench in hell for eternity.

I was being sarcastic in that Democrats ran election on cutting military costs for the last four years.
