ACORN – The Professional Poverty Pimps

The self-styled Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) is one of the most ultra leftwing and grotesquely corrupt operations in the country.

Nevertheless, or perhaps because of that, the DNC's Associate Press has launched a PR campaign for ACORN's Kartina efforts with laudatory photos and "news stories."

The following article is from the black giveaway, the Louisiana Weekly<:

Katrina Survivors to Rally in Washington, D.C.

January 2, 2006 Survivors of Hurricane Katrina and their supporters from around the country will converge on the nation's capitol on February 8th and 9th to demand more help from lawmakers in the recovery and rebuilding of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. The ACORN Katrina Survivors Association is organizing the caravan and events to demand "the right to return and the funds to rebuild." Several hundred participants will march, rally, and meet with lawmakers and officials to press for an immediate, comprehensive and inclusive rebuilding plan – and a voice for low and moderate income hurricane survivors in the process. "We are going to Washington to let the world people know how the U.S. government has turned their back on us – the ordinary people of New Orleans who have worked hard all our lives," said Dorothy Stukes, spokesperson for the ACORN Katrina Survivors Association. "Every Katrina survivor: get on board and let's fight for the help we need, and deserve, to return and rebuild our homes and communities." Buses to the rally will depart from Baton Rouge, New Orleans, San Antonio, Little Rock, and other cities housing displaced survivors, arriving in Washington late in the day on February 8th. The rally and other events will take place on February 9th and will be co-sponsored by a variety of labor, faith and community allies. Any Katrina survivor can take part in the trip for $50 ; other fundraisers are being planned to help cover the remaining costs. Anyone who wishes to participate should call the ACORN Hurricane Hotline at 1-800-790-2290, email katrinarelief@acorn.org or contact their local ACORN office. Visit www.acorn.org for more information.

Ms Stukes is an unusual pick to be a spokesperson for Katrina survivors. Not too long ago she was singing a very different tune.

From an article in the DNC's Washington Post which claims that two thirds of Katrina evacuees don't even want to return to their home towns:

We say, God did this for a reason, to clean up the shootings and murders that have become New Orleans,” said Dorothy Stukes, 54, a school security officer from Jefferson Parish who said she spent “four days of hell” in the Louisiana Superdome. “Ninety-five percent of us are good people, but now God is going to take care of those that are not.”

And what's this about ACORN charging these poor Katrina victims $50 bus fare?

ACORN is one of most most massively funded operations in the world. (Of course they are also notorious for paying their employees even less than the minimum wage that they insist upon for everyone else.)

You can get the skinny on ACORN from Frontpage Magazine's highly informative " Discover The Networks " site. But here are some excerpts to give you the general idea:

Presenting itself as a vehicle for "community organizing" of poor and working-class people, ACORN enriches itself through an array of money-making schemes ranging from Jesse Jackson-style corporate shakedowns to fraudulent solicitation of federal grants – schemes which, in many cases, exploit the very people ACORN claims to be helping.

  • Largest radical group in America, with 175,000 dues-paying member families, and more than 850 chapters in 70 US cities
  • Founded by Wade Rathke, a former draft resistance activist for the militant group Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)
  • Works through front groups, such as Project Vote, the Working Families Party, Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE) and Citizens Consulting, Inc. – the latter owned and run by Wade Rathke's brother Dale
  • In November 2001, a coalition of radical politicians led by ACORN-sponsored candidates running on the Working Families Party ticket won a veto-proof majority on the New York City Council, giving ACORN de facto control of the New York City government.
  • Implicated in numerous reports of fraudulent voter registration, vote-rigging, voter intimidation and vote-for-pay scams during the 2004 election
  • ACORN has close ties to organized labor. Rathke holds leadership positions in the radical government-worker union SEIU and in the AFL-CIO. He also helped launch the United Labor Union (ULU), which organizes low-skill service workers.
  • Falsifying thousands of voter registration forms, either by registering the same person multiple times or by registering deceased or imaginary people
  • Hiring canvassers to collect registration forms from Democratic voters, while destroying those of Republican voters
  • Registering convicted felons, even in states where felons are ineligible to vote (Meghan Clyne, "ACORN & the Money Tree: Taxpayer Money Helps Fund Voter Fraud," National Review Online, 31 October 2004; "ACORN: Voter Registration Fraud Allegations are Just the Tip of the Iceberg," PR Newswire, Employment Policies Institute, 13 October 2004)
