HHS Grants 221 More Obama-Care waivers

A Friday evening ‘news dump’ we almost missed, from The Hill:

HHS approves 200 more new healthcare reform waivers

By Julian Pecquet – 05/13/11

The Obama administration approved 204 new waivers to Democrats’ healthcare reform law over the past month, bringing the total to 1,372.

The waivers are temporary and only apply to one provision of the law, which requires health plans to offer at least $750,000 worth of annual medical benefits before leaving patients to fend for themselves. Still, Republicans have assailed the waivers as a sign of both favoritism and of major problems with the law.

These temporary waivers are only good for one year. Which is very clever on the part of the Obama administration. That way nobody is going to go to the press to complain about the process. Lest they might not be granted a waiver for next year.

"The fact that over 1,000 waivers have been granted is a tacit admission that the healthcare law is fundamentally flawed," Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) said in March. Upton is one of three House committee chairmen who has used new oversight powers to investigate the annual limit waivers.

Why aren’t we hearing anything about this investigation?

Administration officials say the law allows the Health and Human Services Department to grant the waivers to avoid disrupting the insurance market before the law overhauls the insurance system in 2014. They say the waivers are granted through a transparent process.

A process that is so transparent we didn’t even know about it until reports surfaced that McDonald’s had gotten a waiver. Which the government then denied. Which McDonald’s then denied. Then it was discovered that they were both lying, and that there was a waiver. And that it was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

And subsequently we have learned (despite the administration’s best efforts to keep us in the dark) that the lion’s share of these waivers have gone to unions and other Obama and Democrat cronies.

This latest round of waivers also includes one for the state of Nevada, which of course is represented by a powerful Democrat. Speaking of which, we also have this report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

San Francisco Health Waivers

May 15, 2011, by Jamie Dupree

… First, let’s get everyone up to speed on what happened, as the Obama Administration released another 221 waivers of a provision in the health reform law which allow companies to limit health insurance plan payouts to less than $750,000 for the year…

Some of the names in this latest batch are familiar – Wendy’s International is one – though the fast food restaurant is only getting a waiver for 22 employees.

Another familiar name, REI – the outdoor equipment company – which won a waiver for health coverage provided to 1,180 of its employees.

The latest waivers included another two dozen plus unions as well, like the CWA Local 1182 Security Benefits Fund in New York, the Southeastern Hotel Employees & Restaurant Employees Health & Welfare Fund and the Washington Wholesalers Health and Welfare Fund

The reporter goes on to note that a large number of this latest round of waivers are for businesses and organizations operating in Nancy Pelosi’s district of San Francisco.

And, lest we forget, it was Ms. Pelosi who wrote the healthcare reform bill in the first place. Apparently, now that the bill has been passed, her constituents are learning what is in it.

Still, this what the Obama administration means by ‘a transparent process.’

So as you can plainly see we are screwed for being commoners.
It would be refreshing to have the truth once in awhile………alas!
    Transparency for the privileged hordes.

I’d like to know if we all got waivers would anyone get the message that this 2,000 + page cram down is moot?
Why is it that the waiver goes bye bye after a year? Must one boot lick and grovel for a continuance of said waiver?
Wasn’t this set up to give those without HC some kinda coverage?
If so,then why are millions still left without after the fact?

HUZZAH! –Our Benevolent Dictator has decided to manipulate supply, demand, and price once again!–maybe even for our benefit this time!

Just like OIL, just like the water crisis in California, just like the economy, just like the death panels will do, just like health care will do….carefully metered-out portions…..just to see how hot to turn up the water before the frog knows it’s being cooked alive.

“We can’t just drive our SUVs and forget about the planet!” –wise, he is so wise.

“We have to drill for oil to protect the middle class.” –wise again, so wise.
