Hillary Backs Spitzer’s Illegal Alien Licenses

From the transcript of last night’s Democrat debate, via MSNBC:

Oct. 30 Democratic debate transcript

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania presidential candidate forum at Drexel

Senator Clinton, Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer has proposed giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. He told the Nashua, New Hampshire, Editorial Board it makes a lot of sense.

Why does it make a lot of sense to give an illegal immigrant a driver’s license?

Clinton: Well, what Governor Spitzer is trying to do is fill the vacuum left by the failure of this administration to bring about comprehensive immigration reform. We know in New York we have several million at any one time who are in New York illegally. They are undocumented workers. They are driving on our roads. The possibility of them having an accident that harms themselves or others is just a matter of the odds. It’s probability.

So what Governor Spitzer is trying to do is to fill the vacuum. I believe we need to get back to comprehensive immigration reform because no state, no matter how well intentioned, can fill this gap. There needs to be federal action on immigration reform.

Russert: Does anyone here believe an illegal immigrant should not have a driver’s license?

(Unknown): Believe what?

Russert: An illegal immigrant should not have a driver’s license.

Dodd: This is a privilege. And, look, I’m as forthright and progressive on immigration policy as anyone here. But we’re dealing with a serious problem here, we need to have people come forward. The idea that we’re going to extend this privilege here of a driver’s license I think is troublesome, and I think the American people are reacting to it.

We need to deal with security on our borders. We need to deal with the attraction that draws people here. We need to deal fairly with those who are here.

But this is a privilege. Talk about health care, I have a different opinion. That affects the public health of all of us.

But a license is a privilege, and that ought not to be extended, in my view.

Clinton: Well, I just want to add, I did not say that it should be done, but I certainly recognize why Governor Spitzer is trying to do…

(Unknown): Wait a minute…

Clinton: And we have failed. We have failed.

Dodd: No, no, no. You said — you said yes…

Clinton: No.

Dodd: … you thought it made sense to do it.

Clinton: No, I didn’t, Chris. But the point is, what are we going to do with all these illegal immigrants who are driving…

Dodd: That’s a legitimate issue. But driver’s license goes too far, in my view.

Clinton: Well, you may say that, but what is the identification?

If somebody runs into you today who is an undocumented worker…

Dodd: There’s ways of dealing with that.

Clinton: Well…

Dodd: This is a privilege, not a right.

Clinton: Well, what Governor Spitzer has agreed to do is to have three different licenses, one that provides identification for actually going onto airplanes and other kinds of security issues, another which is another ordinary driver’s license, and then a special card that identifies the people who would be on the road, so…

Dodd: That’s a bureaucratic nightmare.

Clinton: … it’s not the full privilege.

Russert: Senator Clinton, I just want to make sure of what I heard. Do you, the New York senator, Hillary Clinton, support the New York governor’s plan to give illegal immigrants a driver’s license?

You told the New Hampshire paper that it made a lot of sense. Do you support his plan?

Clinton: You know, Tim, this is where everybody plays “gotcha.” It makes a lot of sense. What is the governor supposed to do? He is dealing with a serious problems. We have failed. And George Bush has failed. Do I think this is the best thing for any governor to do? No. But do I understand the sense of real desperation, trying to get a handle on this? Remember, in New York, we want to know who’s in New York. We want people to come out of the shadows.

He’s making an honest effort to do it. We should have passed immigration reform

Edwards: … I want to add something that Chris Dodd just said a minute ago, because I don’t want it to go unnoticed. Unless I missed something, Senator Clinton said two different things in the course of about two minutes just a few minutes ago.

And I think this is a real issue for the country. I mean, America is looking for a president who will say the same thing, who will be consistent, who will be straight with them. Because what we’ve had for seven years is double-talk from Bush and from Cheney, and I think America deserves us to be straight…

Double-talk is right, but it was from Mrs. Bill Clinton.

Still, it is painfully clear that Hillary is fully behind giving licenses to illegal aliens.

“what Governor Spitzer is trying to do is fill the vacuum left by the failure of this administration to bring about comprehensive immigration reform”

What goes unsaid here is that immigration reform was left to this administration because of the Clinton administration’s failure to bring about comprehensive reform in 8 years in the White House.

I think the Hildabeast really stepped in doo-doo this time. She’s failed to side with the majority of Americans on illegal immigration and what to do about it.
This may come back to haunt her, big time.

The empress isn’t wearing any clothes (and it aint pretty). The Dems are starting to see that Hillary is vulnerable, especially as her views are defined. The problem is they all share the same views. We’ve been through the illegal amnesty debate, the “stick it to the rich” tax debate, the socialized health care debate, and we as a country strongly rejected these ideas, yet they are the cornerstones of her candidacy. Despite the polls, which mean nothing right now apart from her very high negatives, she is extremely vulnerable. The Democratic Party has been hijacked by the Loony Left and have allowed themselves to be painted into a corner. They don’t have a decent alternative; they’re all invested in the same doomed positions and, worse yet, defeat in Iraq. Americans will not elect a defeatist.

I think Rush saw the real underlying issue here. New York has a “motor voter” law. This opens things up to election fraud because an application for a drivers license in NY is also voter registration. I would probably be more worried about this if it were anywhere but New York since NY is already something like 99% Democrat anyway, a million more registered Democrats won’t make that much difference.

And what about the “full faith” clause? If NY gives driver’s licenses to illegals, and those illegals moved to Texas, who doesn’t give licenses to illegals, would Texas then be required to do so? And once they have obtained licenses in red states, then what? The MotorVoter Act is federal and means that if an illegal gets a license in North Carolina they can then register to vote at the same time. This is a boon for Democrats. They can’t win elections being honest so they are wanting to register millions of illegals who will vote for the party that promises them the most free stuff.

    “MotorVoter Act is federal ”

Not as far as I know. Voter registration criteria are set by the individual states. There is no federal voter registration guideline as far as I know.

“Because of the federal Motor Voter Law, everyone getting a driver’s license in New York is automatically handed a voter registration form. With New York being home to upwards of 500,000 illegal aliens, the potential for mischief is great, especially since the Spitzer administration has reversed a policy that would have barred the Department of Motor Vehicles from handing out motor-voter registration forms to anyone without a Social Security number.”

-’It makes a lot of sense. What is the governor supposed to do?’-

I got two suggestions Ms Clinton

    Deportation
    or
    Shoot To kill.

In lieu of those two - if they are too tough for you Ms Clinton - how about these
Build the Wall - voted on and partially funded
    Enforce the Laws
Fine the buinesses that employ, teach, provide services, give welfare to, house, etc illegal aliens.

Looky, there 5 things for Gov Spitzer and others to do that don’t involve giving Criminal Illegal Aliens - Rights, Freedoms and Amnesty.

What a crock - maybe this is the beginning of the end for the Hildabeast - she also ’struggled’ with the question of experience and how to prove it - since ole horney hound dog shut down the vetting of docs from the Clinton soiling of the WH years.

BTW, what is wrong with these losers (the current crop of candidates) - can’t one of them ask - Why the heck did your hubby not do a damn thing about immigration during his 8 years? These losers really need to step up to the plate or get out of rotation - they are all making American politics look like a joke.

wm4 — they’ll be a lot of questions like yours asked during the general election…that’s when the double-talk express crashes in a fiery wreck. Bill had charisma; she’s a hag.

The motor voter law is also know as the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, brought to your neighborhood by the United States Congress during the Clintoon administration.

And Obama and Silky Pony, with the help of Dodd, made Hillary look like a freaking fool on this issue last night. Now if those three buffoons can make you look like a fool, you’re in deep kim chee. I’m sure Mr. Spitzer will catch holy hell about putting her in the position of having to answer for him. He should have know….shouldn’t he? I can almost imagine a great big democrat circle-jerk melt down.

So what this is really all about is buying votes. Register illegals and then promise more services/amnesty/whatever for illegals in order to ensure their vote. One thing the Democrats do NOT want to see happen is for these illegals to completely assimilate and start their own businesses and send their kids to college and stuff because then they run the risk of those illegals becoming Republicans. So they are going to want to keep them poor, speaking only Spanish, and uneducated while all the while promising more “services” for poor, uneducated spanish speakers in order to keep their vote locked in.

    Wonderful.

“So they are going to want to keep them poor, speaking only Spanish, and uneducated while all the while promising more “services” for poor, uneducated spanish speakers in order to keep their vote locked in.”

Bingo. The template was perfected in dealing with blacks during LBJ’s Great Society days. Now it just needs to be tweaked and adapted to illegals. Oh and don’t worry about starting businesses and sending their kids to college. The colleges/universities will shape the little illegals to the “progressive” way of thinking and ensure the continuity of the breed.

    From the New York Times:

A Day Later, Clinton Embraces Spitzer’s License Effort

    By Adam Nagourney

A day after she appeared to struggle to give her views on the subject, Hillary Rodham Clinton offered support today for Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s effort to award New York driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, as her campaign sought to contain potentially damaging fallout from what her own supporters saw as a tense and listless debate performance.

Mrs. Clinton’s statement affirming her support of Mr. Spitzer in his office came less than a day after she offered a muddled and hesitant position on the bill, prompting a round of denunciations by her opponents. It signaled the extent to which her advisers viewed that moment as the biggest misstep she made in the debate, and one with long-term potential to undermine her candidacy.

“Senator Clinton supports governors like Governor Spitzer who believe they need such a measure to deal with the crisis caused by this administration’s failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform,’” her campaign said.

Mrs. Clinton’s aides said her statement was intended to signal that she broadly supported Mr. Spitzer’s goal of awarding driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. Mr. Spitzer initially proposed a blanket program of awarding full-fledged driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants; in the face of sharp opposition from the Legislature, he backed off and presented a two-tier program system of awarding licenses to illegal immigrants.

Mrs. Clinton’s advisers said that she had not studied either plan, and was not specifically endorsing either of them.

Still, the wording of the statement was murkier than what many of her opponents have said in either supporting or opposing Mr. Spitzer’s initiatives.

Of course this is no surprise whatsoever.

  15. Warmonger Infidel

Hillary waffled when pressed for her stance on this issue by Obama, Edwards and Dodd. Great guys. But curious minds want to know……where do the three that jumped Hillary stand on the issue? And saying it’s a NY issue so not theirs ain’t good ’nuff. Just wondering. Does anyone know?
