Hillary Buys $5.4M Crystal From Sweden

From the New York Post:

Steuben stemware

Hill’s $nub of U.S. companies in purchase of crystal stemware is clear

WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton’s State Department is spending $5.4 million to buy fine crystal stemware for American embassies — but it won’t give the US economy much of a boost.

The contract was given to a tiny Washington, DC, interior designer, which in turn subcontracted the crystal work to a Swedish firm — snubbing such US companies as the famous manufacturer in Clinton’s own back yard, Steuben Crystal of upstate Corning.

The firm didn’t even get a chance to bid on the contract, which will outfit embassies and ambassadors’ residences with fancy crystal for ritzy functions.

Ironically, under the no-bid contract, some of the crystal is to be custom-crafted to include the seal of the United States, although Swedes will do all of the manufacturing.

Contracting rules require any American firms that subcontract work to use a domestic firm or get a waiver.

The firm that got the contract, Systems Design Inc., is a small interior-design firm in tony Georgetown. The company, which is eligible for minority small-business contracts, does not appear to have done any similar work.

After getting the contract in September, the firm subcontracted to Swedish glassmaker Orrefors/Kosta Boda USA.

Department spokesman Darby Holladay said Systems Design couldn’t find a domestic producer who could meet the 100 percent lead-free requirement, although a Steuben spokesman said it does manufacture lead-free crystal.

Notice, as the article points out, there is an actual requirement to use an American firm, unless there is a waiver. And, of course the waiver here was granted because they were using a ‘minority’ small business.

Never mind that there are probably more blacks working for Corning glass in New York than there are in all of Sweden.

Where is the outrage from the Congressional Black Caucus? (Just kidding.)

By the way, doesn’t $5.4 million taxpayer dollars seem like a helluva lot of money just for glassware? How many glasses did that buy?

You can feed a lot of hongry children for $5.4 million dollars.

(Thanks to Gil for the heads up.)

Are we sure we aren’t talking about “crystal meth” and not crystal stemware?

Five-point-four million seems like a lot of money for some drinking glasses. And if we want the presidential seal on them, why not go the route of the Obama commemorative coins…..you know, the ones with the self-adhesive stickers that were so popular after his election. You could peel off the sticker and still spend the money. The sticker didn’t devalue it at all.

In this economy, our gov’t is blowing that much money on crystal in another country, hmm. Our giant ponzi-scheme government is surly doomed to fail.

These people can’t hold on to a dime with super-glue, I’m tellin’ ya…….

Not really. That’s about one month of Obamy’s wagu beef budget. For him and his bros.

Could it be Hillary Clinton is channeling Nancy Reagan?!

Hillary, likely has a 2nd discounted contract & registry with the Sweden crystal company for Chelsea’s upcoming wedding.

      Bullseye, Canary!!!

Chelsea’s wedding and honeymoon are bought and paid for by whom other than the US taxpayers by way of some “crystal”.

You don’t expect liberals, a Clinton no less, to actually pay out of their own pocket do you?!

For the record, $5.4 million for stemware = 36,000 glasses at 150 a piece.

There are 60 U.S. Embassies, Consulates, and Diplomatic Missions:

    U.S. Department of State

So each needs on average 600 glasses?

Since the Clintons lifted everything in the White House that wasn’t nailed down – makes you wonder how many of these crystal glasses will find their way into the Clinton’s crib.

I’m glad to hear that our government is being responsible during the recession by not torching the bucks they’ve collected from American workers.

The elites need their Swedish crystal stemware. And Marie Antoinette needed her two-foot powdered hair styles shaped like architecture, too. By the way, none of the “rich” people I know spend over a hundred bucks on a single glass. Or they have the dignity not to charge me for it.

I can’t wait to see what the government does with their other noble projects.

Should I tell our dear Hillary that I can find decent crystal stemware, at marked up retail stores for under ten dollars a piece if simple glass won’t do? Shall I refer her to one of the discount stores in my area? Etched class can’t be that much more expensive either. Sure you could find an American company that does it at discount for the privilege. It would make for great advertising.

But who cares? 5 million is mince meat for aristocrats and bureaucrats alike. They are the kids who get access to daddy’s credit card without a spending limit. Cue the limo, cue the crystal, cue the glitz. Who cares when it’s not your money?
