Hillary’s Derby Pick Finishes 2nd, Is Put Down

From the Associated Press:

Filly Eight Belles breaks down after 2nd-place Derby finish

By BETH HARRIS

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Filly Eight Belles finished second behind favorite Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, then collapsed with two broken front ankles and was euthanized after crossing the wire.

The field of 20 horses was galloping out around the first turn at Churchill Downs when Eight Belles suddenly went down on both front legs and jockey Gabriel Saez slid off.

An equine ambulance reached her on the track and put Eight Belles down.

There was no possible way to save her,” on-call veterinarian Dr. Larry Bramlage said. “She broke both front ankles. That’s a bad injury.”

Not to make everything political, but isn’t it ominous that Hillary’s pick for the Kentucky Derby — the only filly in the race — broke her two front ankles crossing the finish line in second place and had to be put down?

And she lost to “Big Brown”?

Still, what a senseless tragedy. Something has got to be done about running these poor dumb animals to death.

And I don’t mean our politicians.

There might be something perversely prophetic there, SG. I think it was because instead of Eight Bells staying to the left, she began running more to the center. Hmmmm.

  2. DW

SG, you once posted a pic of Hilary here where she had her teeth showing and was looking very wild-eyed. She looked for all the world like a horse that just had a cougar jump on its back.
(never break those ankles though…ooh nasty…sorry)

  3. DEZ

And Big Brown takes 1st place.

  4. JohnMG

    Before reading this story and thought maybe you were going to tell me the horse jammed both front feet, did a forward flip, and the horses-ass won! (mmph, mmph) ;-}

Nope, that’s not the one, SG.
(that one always reminded me of the death photo of the Mad Trapper)
I’ll see if I can find it.

  8. JohnMG

How apropos. She was in a livestock auction barn when that pic was taken. Were they trying to tell how old she was?

That photo has gotten a lot of play, DW. (As has the one at the bottom of the first link I posted.)

LOL. That’s what got me into photography (and kept me out of politics) -I’m so hopelessly unphotogenic I figure it’s alot safer to be behind the camera.

Oh, come one. You know the saying: politics is show business for ugly people.

Something has got to be done about running these poor dumb animals to death.

This is what I despise about big-time Thoroughbred racing…running animals that are barely old enough to have a rider on them, let alone be raced at a dead run for more than a mile. These horses joints aren’t even fully developed and they haven’t shed all their colt teeth yet…and then have their lives ended because of the pressure placed on their limbs causing fractures. It’s enough to make a person sick.

A good horseman doesn’t begin to seriously consider riding a horse until that horse is at least four and fully grown…but then, I’d never accuse any of these racing fools to be horsemen at all, let alone good. Three year-old races like the Kentucky Derby are just plain wrong and are cruel because they only allow colts to enter (and don’t say “She was a filly, not a colt”…I’m a western rider, and I’ve been around horses my whole life except for a while when I was in the Air Force. To me, any young horse is a colt, regardless of whether it’s male or female), and then damage the animals physically.

Personally, I’d like to see these races boycotted by responsible horsemen, but that ain’t gonna happen…too much money involved. I never enter young horses in futurity events and I never participate in any horse-related activity that allows immature horses to be entered. It’s a personal guideline, but one that keeps my horses from breaking legs and my conscience clean.

  14. SG

    I agree wholeheartedly, SR.

Also, in addition to your excellent points, many of these horses are practically crazy by the time they are done with their racing days — if not sooner.

For example, as you probably know, many racehorses kick out their stalls whenever they hear a “bell,” they are so over-trained and high strung. It’s sick.

Maybe long ago it was the genteel “sport of kings,” but no more.

And that’s leaving aside the “bettors.” Who, in this day and age, are mostly people on welfare or some other form of government subsidy.

  15. DW

Sharps, for whatever it’s worth, no one is belittling the death of the horse. It occurred to me (and no doubt the other posters on this thread) that it’s a shame about the horse having to be put down.
We’re just having a chuckle at the expense of Hillary.
Where are the animal activists on this ? I know they bitch non-stop about the Calgary Stampede.

  16. U NO HOO

    1. It is a shame that a horse has to die for human “entertainment.”

    2. Owners should try running on four toe nails.

  17. Sharps Rifle

DW, I didn’t think anyone was belittling the loss of that filly…this is a class group of posters, and I’d be shocked if anyone were that crass.

I also was a bit blindsided by Hillary betting on that little girl and then seeing her break those two ankles (the horse, not the horse’s ass).

As for the animal activists going after rodeos, race horses should be treated as well as broncs are…a race horse runs every couple weeks, whereas a bronc is bucked only a couple times a season, and then only for eight seconds a pop! Race horses are drugged and conditioned to the point of near insanity…the only broncs I’ve ever encountered with an attitude problem are bareback broncs, and they’re just ill-tempered. I’ve only come across one saddle bronc that was nasty. On average, most rodeo horses are good natured, they just like to buck (and are good at it!). A bronc can be a $10,000.00 or higher investment for the stock contractor…he’s not going to mistreat those animals ONE BIT, and vets have open access to all rodeo stock. I’ve not seen that level of access granted at race tracks…I wonder why? (NOT!)

It just makes me sick seeing a beautiful horse like Eight Belles have to be destroyed simply because she was stressed beyond her physical capacity. Race horse after race horse after race horse has to be put down because of broken legs…but I haven’t yet heard of a bronc needing to be euthanized because of a flank cinch. PETA and the rest of the animal rights nuts need to get a clue…rodeos aren’t cruelty to animals…they’re cruelty to cowboys!

Before you guys start getting any ideas you better re-check Hillary’s ankles.

A really sad moment and a painful loss.

We in this fine Nation treasure life.

    So sad others do not.

In regards to Hillary, after watching her repeated LIES, she doesn’t seem to care about anything but her own greedy self.

But I am sorry to wonder, about the Clinton Curse.

It seems almost everyone in contact with these unethical Clintons, has some tragic loss, massive failure, painful memory, or troubling indictment.

Hillary Clinton went out of her way to politicize this poor FILLY in the Race, and now the loss of this incredible Horse, is simply a bizarre irony at this time.

Will Hillary now claim Eight Belles was dodging sniper fire?

Perhaps worst of all, is the vapid enabling of the Clintons by these Democrat Partisans, and even some from the Right.

Ms. Emery’s offering from the WEAKLY STANDARD was simply absurd:
“…a grudging respect for the lady herself. Actually, they may not have changed quite so much as she has (who knows, perhaps merely changed in her image and tactics), but the Hillary of May 2008 is radically different from the Hillary of two months ago, much less the one of last year, or of eight years back. And this one (at least till the nomination is settled) has some traits the right wing can love…”

Has Ms. Emery lost her mind?

LOVE the unethical Hillary Rodham Clinton?

    Or her continued LIES?

Some have become so insecure about the Liberal Obama (or equally about the Liberal Maverick), they have lost all sense of reality.

Hillary Clinton is a part of one of the most unethical teams we have seen in modern US Political Memory.

The Clintons not only lied about the genocide in Rwanda, peddled top secrets to the Chinese, appeased the killer named Arafat, gave mindless Loan Guarantees to the corruption at Enron, but they failed to address the growing threats of the Radical Muslim Militants - actually making the USA more vulnerable to attack - even after the first bombing of the WTC in 1993.

It amazes to see the Liberals continue to empower the Clinton Malfeasance.

And after all the deceit, it wouldn’t surprise me, to believe in the existence of some kind of curse…

  20. bousquem

I remember seeing somewhere that the reason alot of the horses racing lately in the Derbies are having all these problems with legs and ankles is that over half of them are decended from a derby winner in the 50’s and the genetic line is know for ankle and leg problems. There was talk of bringing in “new blood” from places all across the world to improve the gene pool. It seems like horse racing now is less about the horses running than it is social gala and a place “to be seen”. Not to mention a proverbial pissing contest between the super rich to see who can buy the best horse only to have to off it right after or during a race because it was injured.

  21. DEZ

Perdido, Hillary has what are known as cankles, and I wouldn’t touch hers with a baseball mitt.
I will keep my options open with a bat!

  22. GetBackJack

So, Big Brown wins it and the only girl in that horse race falls down and is shot.

Sweet babbling buddha if that ain’t as prophetic as the co-piot on Flight 800 being named Kervorkian.

  23. Lipstick on a PIAPS

Does this mean Euthenasia is now a Political Topic in the 2008 Potus Race?!?

  24. texaspsue

I’m with you there Sharps….give me a rodeo anyday but I refuse to go to another horse race, EVER!

You see, an acquaintance of mine had a beautiful horse, Miss Pretty Promises, that suffered a similar fate at Retama Park in S.A. back in 2006. I won’t go into the gory details but it has effected me to this day. The S.A. newspaper had the bad taste of displaying a picture of the horse on the front page a day after it happen. Sigh…

So excuse me if I can’t muster up any lighthearted comments about this story, but, I have to say that the Hillary comments are funny.

  25. wardmama4

I agree with Sharps on this issue - but add will one thing. I’ve seen the biggest change since the horses and the farms have gone from a family ‘business’ to ‘big’ business. I love watching the Derby, but have to admit - I am against horse racing for the reasons Sharps pointed out. After it became so expensive to keep and run the farms - not to mention buying the horses - the quality just went down. When horses become a ‘commodity’ rather than an animal - well then things of this nature (which as Sharps pointed out was wrong from the standpoint of real horsemen and lovers) - things were just bound to get worse. This whole area went from two guys saying - My horse is faster than your horse - to a big business and gambling enterprise. And now we see it - carelessness with breeding, carelessness with running and simply carelessness with care. Unlike other areas within the horse community - where the best is necessary, because we can’t afford the problem and sickly horses - the racing world just casts them aside and over breeds, rather than really working to stop or change the problems. And it is all about the money.

Perhaps this new trend of seeing the magnificent creatures ruined in such a public consumption way will turn the spotlight onto the very problems that are at the root of it - maybe Eight Belles legacy of dying at the first turn of Churchill Downs will do for Horse Racing what Michael Vick’s very public arrest did for dog fighting - bring it into the homes of the average man - to realize what people do to animals to make a buck.

But I doubt it - since they are just animals so what is the fuss about?!?
And I do agree that the Hillary comments are funny - since she is just such a horses ass (sorry horses of the World) and her progeny was there yesterday - looking very much the son of a horses ass - so to speak. . .[Fashion tip Ms Clinton - no woman in her right mind goes to the Kentucky Derby in what was that gray or silver?!? color darling, bright, wonderful color]

    Well….

Seems she ain’t near as good at picking out horses as she is at picking out cattle….

Meanwhile, I doubt horse-racing will stop–anymore than greyhound racing, and the cruelties that sport entails. it’s the bettors–a lot of dumb people spending highly-taxable money. Too much for the government to give up.

This kind of maltreatment always happens when the item (in this case a horse) is a comodity rather than a living creation of God.
I raise sheep, chickens, and the occasional animal that is given to us. Recently we aquired 5 pigs, only 80 pounders that the producer had to get rid of because they ate their tails (other hogs will kill them if they do that). When we went to pick them up from this “farm” he was kicking them, swearing at them, hitting them. It was disgusting, but it is what happens when people no longer see the animal as a living creature. Since we only have 5 (for a couple more months, then we get bacon) we treat them well, we scratch their heads, clean up after them daily, give them fresh straw, and let them run around. They are happy pigs now.
Sheep are the same way. In Australia, to prevent flystrike (flies lay eggs in feces that is attached to the wool on the rump and then the magots crawl inside the sheep and eat them from the inside out) they cut a large portion of their backsides off so it will scar and wool will not grow and their backsides will stay clean. No anesthesia, just toss them on the back of a pickup, pull out their knife, and cut their asses off. If they cared for the animal they could just trim the wool a few times a year and there would be no problem, but the merino is a comodity to them.
I think there is something in the numbers. Too many, even people, and the people in authority lose their love for them.

  28. Kilmeny

Just like Hillary. Like baseball teams, I doubt that in real life she gives a damn about horse racing, or any other sport for that matter. Just trying to make a political (and feminist) statement out of it.

That poor little horse. I used to read, as a kid, the Black Stallion series and think that horse racing was exciting, till I saw a few racers myself. Touchy, twitchy, overly inbred, far too delicate, raced too young and only there to make their owners money. Rather like pop stars…..

  29. JohnMG

The Redneck; ….”Seems she ain’t near as good at picking out horses as she is at picking out cattle….”

She did pick a perfect jackass for a husband, though—-and she’s still got him too!

“This kind of maltreatment always happens when the item (in this case a horse) is a comodity rather than a living creation of God.”

That’s all too true, I’m afraid.

Over-generalizing from my limited experience with farmers and ranchers, they seem to become inured to their animals’ physical pain.

Maybe you have to get this way to run a business. But it is still pretty shocking.

Of course they think that those who think otherwise are sentimental idiots.

Again, I realize I’m painting with a very wide roller.

Of course PETA’s chimed in; from the AP:

PETA wants Eight Belles jockey suspended after filly’s death

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is seeking the suspension of Eight Belles’ jockey after the filly had to be euthanized following her second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

Gabriel Saez was riding Eight Belles when she broke both front ankles while galloping out a quarter of a mile past the wire. She was euthanized on the track.

PETA faxed a letter Sunday to Kentucky’s racing authority claiming the filly was “doubtlessly injured before the finish” and asked that Saez be suspended while Eight Belles’ death is investigated.

“What we really want to know, did he feel anything along the way?” PETA spokeswoman Kathy Guillermo said. “If he didn’t then we can probably blame the fact that they’re allowed to whip the horses mercilessly.”

Eight Belles trainer Larry Jones said the filly was clearly happy when she crossed the finish line.

“I don’t know how in the heck they can even come close to saying that,” Jones told The Associated Press on Sunday. “She has her ears up, clearly galloping out.”

Guillermo said if Saez is found at fault, the group wants the second-place prize of $400,000 won by Eight Belles to be revoked.

Saez, a 20-year-old Panama native, was riding in his first Kentucky Derby. He frequently rides for Jones.

A call to the jockeys’ room at Delaware Park, where Saez raced on Sunday, went unanswered.

Eight Belles, the first filly since 1999 to run in the Derby, appeared fine until collapsing while galloping out after the finish.

The letter to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority also sought a ban on whipping, limits on races and the age of racehorses, and a move to softer, artificial surfaces for all courses.

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/.....337D43.DTL

By the way, use of a riding crop is just a little different than “whipping the horses mercilessly.”

  32. sheehanjihad

I would imagine most of these PETA people know what a riding crop feels like after their weekly visit to Mistress Wanda’s Emporium of Pain. PETA actually stands for…Please Euthenize Those Asswipes. Race horses have been in bred to the point where they are brittle, and no amount of whining fro peta is going to change the fact that as long as Thoroughbreds are a status symbol amongst the very rich….this type of racing will continue. It is a sad fact no matter how you paint it. While I do feel empathy for the horse, I have little regard for PETA’s predictable blather about animal treatment.

  33. Colonel1961

Wow - been a while since I’ve taken the time to log-in and post - sure didn’t think it would be about the Derby.

I was one of the 157k at CD and had a nice chunk of change on her to Show ($6.40 payout per $2.00 wagered to ‘S’). I watched her closely out of turn four and past the 3/16 pole and I concur with her trainer - she did not look stressed - running strong, ears up, etc. And the jockey went to the whip without question, but I’ve seen far, far, far more severe use of the crop then what I saw in person and also later saw on TVG.

I agree about the bloodlines being thinned, but owners are ‘brand conscious’. Said another way, there is a plethora of new blood out there, but do you think they’re going to buy ‘generic’ or a Ferrari? Not saying it’s right or wrong, it is what it is.

Per bona fides, my grandfather owned race horses and I have been attending meets for four decades, i.e., I know a little about the sport and the animals racing therein.

    Col.

  34. U NO HOO

    amber,

Garrison Keillor had a story years ago about mistreating animals that would become food. Have you heard it?

In case I don’t get back, to paraphrase, he was teasing his uncle’s pigs and was scolded by his uncle to treat the pigs with respect.

In reality the pigs we are going to eat will be us.

Thanks for the insight on sheep, etc.
