Pelosi: House Gets Its Power From Wind

From Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (taxpayer funded) propaganda outlet, The Gavel:

House Announces Next Steps to Green the Capitol

March 2nd, 2009 by Office of the Speaker

Today, Speaker Pelosi released the Green the Capitol Year End Report, which details the successes achieved in the first 18 months of the program. Building on the House’s established leadership position in carbon and energy-use reductions, the report calls for all of the House’s business practices to meet self-imposed sustainability standards including becoming both cost and energy efficient over the next two years and making waste and carbon reduction efforts affect all day-to-day operations.

The report details how the House eliminated 91,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions:

Since 2007 we have reduced the House of Representatives’ carbon footprint by 74 percent through conservation projects and the purchase of renewable energy

All of the electricity used by the House comes from wind power projects

The Green the Capitol Program has made the House of Representatives a leader in the Federal Government in implementing sustainable, energy saving changes and reducing our carbon footprint.

We banned plastic and stryrofoam from the food service

Over 800 tons of waste from House cafeterias that once went to the landfill is now converted into compost that can be used in landscaping and stream restoration

Our Capitol Power Plant, which used to exclusively burn coal, now mixes in cleaner burning natural gas—enough to cover the House’s percentage already. Speaker Pelosi and Senator Harry Reid are now urging a switch to 100 percent natural gas, which will eliminate more than 95 percent of sulfur oxide emissions and cut carbon monoxide emissions in half.

From changing light bulbs … to switching to paperless records … to simply sealing leaks in an historic building—we have been overhauling everything we do, and learning valuable lessons we are sharing on how to go green on a large-scale.

In the next phase of Green the Capitol, as we keep pushing the envelope for more efficiencies, we will also be educating 435 member offices – both here and back in their home districts – on changes they can make—and share with their local communities…

Our country’s economy is circling the drain, the world is spinning off its axis, and Ms. Pelosi and the rest of the Democrats in Congress are spending their time making sure there are no styrofoam cups in the cafeteria.

Speaker Pelosi and Senator Harry Reid are now urging a switch to 100 percent natural gas, which will eliminate more than 95 percent of sulfur oxide emissions and cut carbon monoxide emissions in half.

As we noted previously, this solution will quadruple the cost of power for the Capitol.

But this is what they call being “both cost and energy efficient.”

Still, why should they worry? It’s not their money.

So typical – in the midst of an economic disaster – liberals can only think of ways to spend more taxpayer money.

Cincinnati, OH is having a Tea Party on March 15, 2009 at Fountain Square from 3 to 5 PM. And the National Tea Party is on April 15, 2009 – Party like its 1773.

  2. CaliforniaBear says:

It’s all about image, not effectiveness. They don’t care that they are spending our money to pay their bill, they just wanna look good and look like they are doing something.

What a lovely Pelosi quote, lets see: 2007 – right on time for when Dems took control of the House/Senate and want full responsibility!!! Yet take zero responsibility for anything mortgage, financial, economic, etc. today.

74% – wow – big number. How many programs were in the works Nancy before Dems took control? And I would love the line item detail on the “purchase of renewable energy”

Just another grandstanding flyby from yours truly – Nancy Pelosi.

Looks like the Plastic Fantastic’s 74% drop in that “carbon footprint” (?) has done the job! Here’s a look at how puzzled even the most ardent supporters of the Global Warming hoax are….and trying like hell to shore up their claims in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary. Read the last paragraph…..it will make sense then.

If only we could harness the windbags in Congress, everyone would have free electricity.

    • MinnesotaRush says:

      My thoughts exactly, 1st!!!

    • shalomsweetie says:

Thanks…I needed that. You’ve given me the giggles.

    • You beat me to it. Harnessing the hot air expelled by those windbags would not only provide free electricity, but heat most of the world’s houses, too.

I live in North Ala so we get our elec from TVA. Back in the early 40’s when the TVA people were trying to sign folks up to get elec. , the people were told that they would only get an elec bill until the equipment was paid for then it would be free. Apparently we are still paying for that 70+ year old equipment because my elec bill this month is $348.
I am looking into either a windmill and/or a wood powered steam generator because if obamas cap and trade fiasco goes into effect that $348 bill will morph into a $600-700 bill which I can not afford.

    • Kilmeny says:

I can always count on the people here, when I think of a snarky remark involving “wind” and “Congress” and “Speaker Pelosi”, to have beaten me to it.

My first thought was Piglosi farted!!

BTW…..there was suppose to be a Global Warming protest in DC yesterday.
It was canceled due to the snow storm.
      “UP YOUR BUTT, AL!!”

    • heykev says:

1st your comments about the TVA are so true. Once the government gets a tax or program started, they never end it. Here in Illinois, we were promised (I’m told by my grandfather) that our toll roads would become freeways once they were paid off. Somehow the billions of $$ they’ve collected since the 50’s have not paid them off. They have however, made it much more convent to pay by allowing us the privilege to prepay and then deducting that amount electronically when driving through a tool gate. This is another reason why we as Americans should be marching in the streets with regard to BHO’s pork barrel spending projects/programs – once enacted, they will never go away.

  5. catie says:

The crowd that was out there yesterday looked like jobless, homeless folks as well as rich college students or trust fund losers. Even the once beautiful Daryl Hannah was there “risking arrest” according to our local WJLA Channel 7 news. They also had RFK, jr. as well who was “braving the weather” to make his point to the Congress people that showed up because NOVA did such a “bang up job” in clearing the roads because we’re all weather losers here according to Obambi.
This is kindergarten for adult losers.

“Over 800 tons of waste from House cafeterias that once went to the landfill is now converted into compost that can be used in landscaping and stream restoration ”

535 representatives x 180 lbs = 48 more tons that should go to the landfill immediately

  7. U NO HOO says:

    Name one restored stream, please.

  8. canary says:

Renovating federal buildings was first on Obama’s list. They want clean air, since that’s where America’s new regine and their families will all be living. Hitler would have loved it. If they’d just fly in paper airplanes. Electric airplanes?

“Income” taxes are only mandatory for gov employees, gov contractors, and residents of Washington, D.C. and any other “federal” territories. The rest of us have been deceived into thinking we must pay income tax, and coerced into paying them. It’s a long story. If you want the real truth, read this:

  9. BillK says:

Why doesn’t anyone take Pelosi to task for her comments?

Like most greenies, she has no concept of how the electrical grid actually works.

When she says the House’s power comes from “wind power projects” what that actually means is that the House pays extra to their local utility company for “wind generated power.”

But in reality that power is indistinguishable on the grid from power generated by coal-powered plants, solar, nuclear and any other generation sources in use by whatever power company serves D.C.

Imagine if you will pouring a case of Dasani water into your local town’s water supply and then claiming your house drinks “only Dasani” when you get your water from the tap. That’s the lie Pelosi (and most all other “green powered” businesses) are propagating – it’s as big a lie as “carbon offsets.”

The only way the House could actually be powered by “wind power projects” is if the House had actual wind turbines on site and the Capitol could be physically disconnected from the D.C. power grid.

    I guarantee you that’s not what’s happening.

Now people have, for years, joked that the Capitol should be powered by the hot air spewed by the House and Senate.

    Perhaps here’s their chance.

Better yet, I wish they actually made the effort to install turbines and solar cells at the Capitol and did take it entirely off the grid.

Perhaps then, when our legislators were sitting in the dark, they’d understand that “green” technology can do no more than supplement coal-generated power for the foreseeable future.

Further, let me take a moment to once again state that if Pelosi and pals really cared about the environment, there is literally no reason that everything the House and Senate do could not be done from offices in their home district via secure video conference. None. We’ve actually had the technology for most of a decade and businesses use it every day.

But that wouldn’t allow lobbyists to schmooze them quite as easily, would it.

Besides they’d have to deal with those pesky citizens that elected them that much more often.

Really, is there anything more environmentally hostile than requiring 600 people from all over the United States to meet in single rooms in one location and for them to commute back and forth to their “homes” (their real homes, not the energy-wasting second homes they must maintain) on a regular basis?

You and I both know a “virtual Congress” will never happen, but the point is there is literally no reason it couldn’t.

    • TNpatriot says:

I read an article today where Pelosi responded to a question about Republican lawmakers complaints about not being given enough time to read and debate the stimulus bill they recently passed.

Her response was basically, hey they are lucky they had any say at all, I could have pushed it through a lot quicker.

This country is in trouble, and most just can’t see it.

    • clifcrds says:

BillK . . . you are spot on! I know . . . I am a control room operator in one of those “evil” (but irreplaceable) coal fired power plants. I would have posted almost the same analogy earlier but I just got up . . . this is like 7:00 AM for me . . . had to work the midnight shift last night so some poor “victim” of those evil Bankers will not loose their “right” to the home they cannot afford!

    • Barbie says:

I think the concept of wind power and solar technology powering our energy needs as a country is a big fat myth. Anyway, BillK, correct – someone should call Pelosi on her blather – she’s not a clue what she’s saying. p.s. Pelosi says the House has reduced its carbon footprint by 74%? – I think this calls for an independent audit…

    • proreason says:

BillK makes the mistaken assumption that Stretch cares whether her inance blather is accurate.

To the contrary, she knows that 53% will believe her unflinchingly (or rather, the 2% of the 53% that know who she is), and that the rest pay no attention to her and probaly don’t care anyway.

There is no penalty for lying (or for cheating on taxes, or for stealing from campaign funds, or for deviant behaviour or for etc etc etc etc)

    —————————————————————————–

The green freaks are just sooooo dishonest.

OK: Switch from coal to all natural gas. Eliminates some of the carbon monoxide (CO).

But natural gas burns and creates what? Water and….. carbon dioxide (CO2) Greenhouse Gas Enemy Number One of these freaks.

You cannot escape gases such as either CO or CO2 in the creation of energy, either heat energy, or in the creation of electricity.

How about the electric car nonsense? In the minds of ninnies like Pelosi, it comes out of thin air – out of nothing. But there isn’t a source of electricity, unless its solar charged batteries (which is no practical solution), that does not create carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

    Ooops….. except one. Nuclear.

  12. bill says:

I doubt the Obamaloons know that coal gasification is cleaner and moire efficient. Liquid transport fuels are also cleaner and less polluting, real pollution not phoney CO2, when manufactured from coal. Coal to liquids processes can convert coal to diesel at about $30 a barrel oil equivalent.

Next they will all be driving clown cars, known locally as coffins on wheels. Come to think of it, that might not be all bad.

  13. JohnMG says:

So, the House has gone to a paperless-records system. How convenient. Now, not only will they be able to deny any and every bit of malfeasance, there won’t be any paper trail to hang them with.

And as for the carbon footprint reduction…..does this take into account the weekly air-commute from DC to their home district for Pelosi and the 434 other mental midgets who occupy our “House of Representatives”?

    Doubtful!

  14. beautyofreason says:

This economy is not the time for the federal government to try out expensive experiments on “green living.” If libs wanted a so-called “carbon neutral” footprint they could have made it easier to build new nuclear power plants to supply energy for American needs.

  15. pinandpuller says:

Natural gas powerplants. Target rich environment. Gitmo detainees released on society. What could go wrong?

  16. Bronson says:

Pelosi should look out the window, and seriously evaluate the seriousness of the threat of “global warming”

  17. canary says:

Pelosi ignored earlier complaints when she first came in office, and took private jets back and forth from home to D.C. She ignored the public back then.
