How S&L Begat Obama’s Rev Wright Problem

The latest confirmation from the New York Post:

REV-ENGE IS SWEET FOR ‘BETRAYED’ PASTOR

By FREDRIC U. DICKER State Editor

April 30, 2008 — ALBANY - The Rev. Jeremiah Wright would be happy to see Barack Obama’s presidential campaign derailed because the pastor is fuming that his former congregant has “betrayed” their 20-year relationship.

The Post has learned. “After 20 years of loving Barack like he was a member of his own family, for Jeremiah to see Barack saying over and over that he didn’t know about Jeremiah’s views during those years, that he wasn’t familiar with what Jeremiah had said, that he may have missed church on this day or that and didn’t hear what Jeremiah said, this is seen by Jeremiah as nonsense and betrayal,” said the source, who has deep roots in Wright’s Chicago community and is familiar with his thinking on the matter.

“Jeremiah is trying to defend his congregation and the work of his ministry by saying what he is saying now,” the source added.

“Jeremiah doesn’t care if he derails Obama’s candidacy or not . . . He knows what he’s doing. Obviously, he’s not a dumb man. He knows he’s not helping.”

The source spoke yesterday about Wright’s motivation for thrusting himself back into the news, the day after the pastor appeared at the National Press Club on Monday and embarrassed Obama by accusing the United States of terrorism.

Wright has said the reason he has begun granting interviews and making public appearances now is that he wants to defend black churches.

But the source said the preacher’s motivation is much more personal.

The source noted that the roots of Wright’s disillusionment with Obama began last year after the Illinois senator unexpectedly yanked him from participating in the public announcement of his presidential campaign.

“That’s why Jeremiah revealed . . . that he had actually been at the [announcement] hotel and prayed privately with the Obama family before the official declaration,” the source told The Post.

“Rev. Wright, as well as other senior members of his church, believe that Obama has betrayed over 20 years of their supposed friendship.”

Obama further angered Wright by trying to distance himself from the pastor ever since videos were made public earlier this year of the preacher alleging that America brought 9/11 upon itself and that people should say “God damn America,” not “God bless America.”

The source added, “After 20 years of loving Barack like he is one of their own, after he was embraced by this congregation as a brother in Christ, after his pastor was a father figure to him and gave him credibility in a city he had not grown up in and in a black community that was suspect of someone from Hawaii and Harvard, he thanks him by not allowing him to speak publicly at his announcement last year?

“A lot of people in the church believe they were there for this man when no one else was, and a lot of people don’t believe it any more when Obama claims he loves the man who did so much for him,” the source added.

As we have noted before, Mr. Obama was convinced to dis-invite the Reverend Doctor from his Presidential announcement ceremony because of a news article he had seen about it in Rolling Stone magazine.

From the March 5, 2007 edition of the New York Times:

Disinvitation by Obama Is Criticized

CHICAGO, March 5 — The Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., senior pastor of the popular Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago and spiritual mentor to Senator Barack Obama, thought he knew what he would be doing on Feb. 10, the day of Senator Obama’s presidential announcement.

After all, back in January, Mr. Obama had asked Mr. Wright if he would begin the event by delivering a public invocation.

But Mr. Wright said Mr. Obama called him the night before the Feb. 10 announcement and rescinded the invitation to give the invocation.

“Fifteen minutes before Shabbos I get a call from Barack,” Mr. Wright said in an interview on Monday, recalling that he was at an interfaith conference at the time. “One of his members had talked him into uninviting me,” Mr. Wright said, referring to Mr. Obama’s campaign advisers.

Some black leaders are questioning Mr. Obama’s decision to distance his campaign from Mr. Wright because of the campaign’s apparent fear of criticism over Mr. Wright’s teachings, which some say are overly Afrocentric to the point of excluding whites.

Bill Burton, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, said the campaign disinvited Mr. Wright because it did not want the church to face negative attention. Mr. Wright did however, attend the announcement and prayed with Mr. Obama beforehand.

“Senator Obama is proud of his pastor and his church, but because of the type of attention it was receiving on blogs and conservative talk shows, he decided to avoid having statements and beliefs being used out of context and forcing the entire church to defend itself,” Mr. Burton said.

Instead, Mr. Obama asked Mr. Wright’s successor as pastor at Trinity, the Rev. Otis Moss III, to speak. Mr. Moss declined.

In recent weeks, word of Mr. Obama’s treatment of Mr. Wright has reached black leaders like the Rev. Al Sharpton and given them pause.

“I have not discussed this with Senator Obama in detail, but I can see why callers of mine and other clergymen would be concerned, because the issue is standing by your own pastor,” Mr. Sharpton said

In Monday’s interview, Mr. Wright expressed disappointment but no surprise that Mr. Obama might try to play down their connection.

“When his enemies find out that in 1984 I went to Tripoli” to visit Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, Mr. Wright recalled, “with Farrakhan, a lot of his Jewish support will dry up quicker than a snowball in hell.” Mr. Wright added that his trip implied no endorsement of either Louis Farrakhan’s views or Qaddafi’s.

Mr. Wright said that in the phone conversation in which Mr. Obama disinvited him from a role in the announcement, Mr. Obama cited an article in Rolling Stone, “The Radical Roots of Barack Obama.”

According to the pastor, Mr. Obama then told him, “You can get kind of rough in the sermons, so what we’ve decided is that it’s best for you not to be out there in public.”

As we noted on February 15, 2007, after it was first published, the aforementioned Rolling Stone article was based on the YouTube clip and transcription of the “sermon” we had posted, as well as some other details we had uncovered.

My transcription posted on January 25, 2007:

God Has Got To Be Sick Of This Shit!

[Joined in progress] … Justice is ignored. When women are treated like, or are permitted by this society to be called publicly “bitches,” justice is ignored.

And on that note, on that note, let me paraphrase Dr. Anthony Campolo, one of the nation’s greatest preachers.

He said something to this effect.

Fact number one: we’ve got more black men in prison than there are in college.

Racism is alive and well. Racism is the American way.

Racism is how this country was founded, and how this country is still run.

No black man can ever be President. I don’t care how hard you run Jesse.

No black woman will ever be considered for anything outside of what she can give with her body.

Fact number three: America is still the number one killer in the world.

We invaded Grenada for no other reason than to get Maurice Bishop. We destroyed Panama because Noriega would no longer dance to our tune anymore.

We are deeply involved in the importing of drugs, the exporting of guns and the training professional killers.

We bombed Cambodia, Iraq and Nicaragua, killing women and children, while trying to turn public opinion against Castro and Qaddafi.

Fact number four: we put Mandela in prison and supported apartheid the whole 27 years he was there.

We believe in white supremacy and black inferiority. And believe it more than we believe in God.

Fact number five: we supported Zionism shamelessly while ignoring the Palestinians, and branding anybody who spoke out against it as being anti-Semitic.

Fact number six: we conducted radiation experiments on our own people. You’re just finding out about that. We care nothing about human life, if the end justifies the means.

Fact number seven: we do not care if poor black and brown children cannot read and kill each other senselessly. We abandoned the cities back in the sixties when the riots started, and it really doesn’t matter what those nnn… [niggers] “natives” do to each other.

We gave up on them and public education for poor people who live in the projects. We with VCRs, DVDs, CDs and portable phones have more homeless than any nation in the world.

Fact number eight: we started the AIDS virus, and now that it is out of control we still put more money in the military than in medicine. More money in hate than humanitarian concerns.

Everybody does not have access to health care. I don’t care what the rich white boys in the Senate say.

[Garbled] listen up. If you are poor black and elderly — forget it.

Fact number nine: we only able to maintain our level of living by making sure the Third World people live in grinding poverty.

Fact number ten: we are selfish, self-centered ego egotists, who are arrogant and ignorant.

We pray at church and do not try to make the kingdom that Jesus talked about a reality.

And, and, and… in light of these in fact God has got to be sick of this shit!

The Rolling Stone article, published on February 7, 2007 [which appears to have been subsequently expanded and re-written]:

The Radical Roots of Barack Obama

Destiny’s Child

No candidate since Robert F. Kennedy has sparked as much campaign-trail heat as Barack Obama. But can the one-term senator craft a platform to match his charisma?

BEN WALLACE-WELLS

Feb 07, 2007

… The Trinity United Church of Christ, the church that Barack Obama attends in Chicago, is at once vast and unprepossessing, a big structure a couple of blocks from the projects, in the long open sore of a ghetto on the city’s far South Side. The church is a leftover vision from the Sixties of what a black nationalist future might look like. There’s the testifying fervor of the black church, the Afrocentric Bible readings, even the odd dashiki. And there is the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, a sprawling, profane bear of a preacher, a kind of black ministerial institution, with his own radio shows and guest preaching gigs across the country.

Wright takes the pulpit here one Sunday and solemnly, sonorously declares that he will recite ten essential facts about the United States. “Fact number one: We’ve got more black men in prison than there are in college,” he intones. “Fact number two: Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run!” There is thumping applause; Wright has a cadence and power that make Obama sound like John Kerry. Now the reverend begins to preach. “We are deeply involved in the importing of drugs, the exporting of guns and the training of professional KILLERS. . . . We believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God. . . . We conducted radiation experiments on our own people. . . . We care nothing about human life if the ends justify the means!” The crowd whoops and amens as Wright builds to his climax: “And. And. And! GAWD! Has GOT! To be SICK! OF THIS SHIT!”

To re-cap, our publication of a Wright sermon caused Mr. Obama to dis-invite the Reverend to give the invocation at his Presidential bid announcement.

And more importantly, we now learn that this “snub” is what is motivating Mr. Wright’s current activities which are proving so amazingly lethal to the Obama campaign.

So, as we have noted before, our original S&L post of Mr. Wright’s sermon has changed history. Indeed, it might even end up costing Mr. Obama the Presidency.

Who would have ever believed it?

Since way back in the days of the 04 campaign, I have come to know you as a reliable source of cutting-edge information and you have certainly proven to be so again on this issue. Since yesterday after Obama’s press conference this is what I have had rolling around in my brain about this and since Andrea Mitchell came out with a remark that Obama was out on the campaign trail making light of his denouncement about this last night to her great surprise, I am thinking even more that I might be right.

I have a very devious theory about this whole thing running through my brain that makes sense. Wright’s appearance at the NAACC dinner had been scheduled for some time so Wright has had quite a while to put together his speech. In the meantime the whole controversy of his and Obama’s relationship has been brewing and causing trouble for his “nephew’s” campaign and being taken advantage of by both Hillary and the Right. Wright has been a strong supporter of Obama’s political ambitions for a long time. So it really threw a lot of people for a loop, especially a lot of MSMs, when Wright came out with his line about how as a pastor he is responsible for speaking the truth but Obama as a politician will be willing to say whatever it takes to get himself elected. How could he say such a thing about someone with whom he has such an enduring and endearing relationship for 20 years? Some people have suggested it was for ego or for money (book) or for both and they may be right but perhaps there is an even stronger motivation.
What if Wright called Obama and presented an idea like this? Barry, I warned you quite awhile ago that your relationship with me had the possibility of causing trouble for your campaign and the time would come when you would have to distance yourself from me. Well, I think the time has come and I can help that happen because I know you have tried defending me and would find it hard to abandon me. I’ve got some events coming up. I can say some things that will just push the limits. The media whiteys will go nuts and that gives you the opportunity to publicly denounce me and get me off your back. If you play your part well enough, people will be sympathetic and give you kudos for being so courageous. In the end you’ll get ahead and we can get your campaign back on track.

Wright is a very wilely character and he is very accomplished at playing his audience with just the right well-chosen word, just the right cadence, just the right snarky accusation to arouse just the right response. We saw that on full display in the NCCAA speech and he glories in it. We saw that both at the NCCAA and the Press Club event. He knows he can pull this off. But I also think he doesn’t like the full media spotlight being shone so sharply on his church and his 35 year ministry. If it were not for Obama’s campaign hardly anyone would have even noticed his radical, racist preaching and teaching and if they did who would really care? As a pastor he knows he has a responsibility to protect his flock and he needs to protect his legacy that he’s built over his lifetime. He needs this attention to die down almost as much as Obama does—maybe even more so. If he’s the instigator of the denouncement he knows the drive-bys will soon move on to something else and leave him and his church alone so they can get back to ‘normal’.

So I’m calling this political drama a fraud—a HOAX by both Wright and Obama and so far it looks like they are getting away with it. All Obama had to do was hold a press conference with just the right amount of stammering to look like he was just having pain and “outrage” over Wright’s personal attack on his integrity. And Obama the politician is saying just what he needs to say in order to get elected—or so he thinks.

    Congratulations SG!!

You may be soley responsible for saving our great land from this radical Marxist. Let’s not forget that you put the bug in “someone’s” ear who put the bug in Hannity’s ear and the cookie began to crumble.

    -standing ovation-

  3. TheChicagoWay

Geez, with all of the articles, why don’t you change the name of your website to Sweetness and Wright?

  4. SG

“You may be soley responsible for saving our great land from this radical Marxist.”

Well, that might be a slight exaggeration.

    (He might still win.)

  5. Noyzmakr

    I’m an optimist.

  6. platypus

Should you be sending roses to Cindy Sheehan? I could be wrong but isn’t she the one that caused this blog to get started?

Regardless, she was the placeholder until BO came within the field of fire. So it’s all good.

  7. TheChicagoWay

“(He might still win.)”. No way……I’ll say it again….Hillary is a “lock” (God forbid)…. See, we just traded one obvious socialist for one not-so-obvious socialist.

(Secretly. I do hope Barack secures the nomination: McCain will be the “lock”). Unfortunately, to the average disinterested voter, Hillary and McCain are the same except one of them has the advantage of not being a republican. (Kudos to all you free spending, “drunken sailor” unethical knucklehead republicans in Congress)…..

Anyhow, thank God for the internet and sites like this….. I tell my kids that the greatest inventions EVER vis-à-vis personal liberty are the internet and camera phones….. Pretty soon these phonies and tinhorns will have nowhere to hide……

  8. Noyzmakr

“The source noted that the roots of Wright’s disillusionment with Obama began last year after the Illinois senator unexpectedly yanked him from participating in the public announcement of his presidential campaign.’

What happened to the good reverend’s sense of forgiveness?

He’s a pretty vindictive guy to allow a little slight like that to drive him to try to ruin a “friend’s” chances at the White House.

What a Christian thing to do.(sarc)

  9. SG

“Should you be sending roses to Cindy Sheehan? I could be wrong but isn’t she the one that caused this blog to get started?”

I can understand why you would think that. But I had been thinking about starting a site for years — a repository.

Ms. Sheehan just happened to arrive on the scene when I finally broke down and set one up.

  10. greybeard

Quite so, such possibilities… I have pondered on it a lot. A Riff or planned.

The next move, to counter such false disassociation, is too advance more facts that damage Barack’s attempt to conceal that he knew any of these Wright displays of .antithical(sp) antics and philosophy.

It’s certainly a fact that the Media and apologists continue to focus on Wright as an ASSOCIATE who’s opinion’s doesn’t mean they are Obama’s opinions. They ask, “Should we be blaming Obama for what Wright says and does?

Character and judgement are almost never questioned for the association/s of our Obama.

They speak continuiously of , “How could Obama sit in the pew for 20 years and not have heard this?”
    Over and Over and Over.
I have writen them several times with Obama written sources.
Not a one of them seems to have a staff that wants to do the work to prove that Obama knew dam well the racist agenda of the Church, knew of Reverend Wrights volitive victimization stronghold methods, and it’s entrapment an extra value to Obama as an organizer.
The bloody media continues to repeat and repeat tidbits they pick up off each other and seem to never to just go to personal sources such as Obama’s own Book to show that Obama knew . Obama Choose.

from my notes: there really is much to much to try to figure out what to embolden here.

Obama implicitly embraces the Wright Black Value System 20 years ago: quotes from Obama’s Dreams of My Father on the subjects of Jeremiah Wright, Trinity United, and the Black Values System. One must bear in mind that more recent printings of Barack’s book have been cleansed and some quotes won’t be found in newer editions.

Obama, after meeting with Wright at Trinity: “Afterward, in the parking lot, I sat in my car and thumbed through a silver brochure that I’d picked up in the reception area. It contained a set of guiding principles-a “Black Value System”-that the congregation had adopted in 1979. At the top of the list was a commitment to God, “who will give us the strength to give up prayerful passivism and become Black Christian activists, soldiers for Black freedom and the dignity of all humankind.”

Nah, Barack never knew what was going on in this Church. He’s never heard any of this Wright retoric before and he doesn’t know the man he is hearing now…soldiers for Black freedom

Then a commitment to the black community and black family, education, the work ethic, discipline, and self-respect.
A sensible, heartfelt list…There was one particular passage in Trinity’s brochure that stood out, though, a commandment more self-conscious in its tone, requiring greater elaboration. “A Disavowal of the Pursuit of Middleclassness,” the heading read. “While it is permissible to chase ‘middleincomeness’ with all our might,” the text stated, those blessed with the talent or good fortune to achieve success in the American mainstream must avoid the “psychological entrapment of Black ‘middleclassness’ that hypnotizes the successful brother or sister into believing they are better than the rest and teaches them to think in terms of ‘we’ and ‘they’ instead of ‘US’!”

My thoughts would often return to that declaration in the weeks that followed as I met with various members of
    Trinity.

It occurred to me that Trinity, with its African themes, its emphasis on black history, continued the role that
Reverend Philips had described earlier as a redistributor of values and circulator of ideas. Only now the
redistribution didn’t run in just a single direction from the schoolteacher or the physician who saw it as a
Christian duty to help the sharecropper or the young man fresh from the South adapt to big-city life. The flow of
culture now ran in reverse as well; the former gang-banger, the teenage mother, had their own forms of
validation-claims of greater deprivation, and hence authenticity, their presence in the church providing the lawyer or doctor with an education from the streets. By widening its doors to allow all who would enter, a church like Trinity assured its members that their fates remained inseparably bound, that an intelligible “us” still remained.

It was a powerful program, this cultural community, one more pliant than simple nationalism, more sustaining than my own brand of organizing.

And, if men like Reverend Wright failed to take a stand, if churches like Trinity refused to engage with real power
and risk genuine conflict, then what chance would there be of holding the larger community intact?

Sometimes I would put such questions to the people I met with. They would respond with the same bemused look
Reverend Philips and Reverend Wright had given me. For them, the principles in Trinity’s brochure were articles of faith no less than belief in the Resurrection.

Again we see Obama read and knew of the Church’s Black Liberation values and thought the List was “heartfelt and sensible.
As a community organizer Obama also saw the tremendous value that disavowel of success could have. Successful blacks moving out of communities and becoming a part of an alledged better “white society” of “They” rather than a separate brotherhood of “Us” hindered a social and economic agenda. This freedoom of blacks of being “hypnotized’ into believing THEY, and their successful lives, were actually better, had to be trumped.
Obama not only saw the value in principle, but states in the Book that he asked, if they could organize 50 such churches.
Entrapment in victimization could transcend ‘class’ with the proper chains applied and the bonds could follow the successfull person anywhere while never shrinking the socialist and econmic base.
Obama not only knew of the Churchs activist message but worked to spread it’s bondage.

We believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God

If Obama never knew of this Church’s complex(ities), then do we really want this blind messiaha having any sit downs with those who believe in a gawd who loves death more than Satan American’s gawd loves life.

Let’s also not forget for a man who so loves America Obama didn’t get MAD about any of the past Wright statements, until it seemed Wright was personaly attacking him…

Nice work SG. It’s been interesting watching this unfold over the last year. One little seed you planted has come to full bloom.

This saga has ended up in a clash of egos. Poor narcissistic Rev. Wright’s bruised ego has compelled him to attempt to take down B. Hussein.

I wonder when B. Hussein will demand a refund of his 26 thousand dollar investment.

  17. sheehanjihad

Wright is the product of an adoring media….and like the Snag, he is getting caught up in his own noteriety…..thinking he is in fact important. He is just being used like she was, and once his stupidity is no longer news, he will be discarded like that fat douchebag was.

  18. wirenut

    Tatergram ? Good one S.J. . I know you will deliver !

Hahaha… that IS a good one! When you want to send the very best. LOL

“So I’m calling this political drama a fraud—a HOAX by both Wright and Obama….”

OMG Albertafriend, my husband had that same theory. I tend to agree with him. (Well now, with both of you.) Only, I think “the hoax” was suppose to work that way but, it is going to backfire on them. If BO and Mr. Wright can’t relate to Main Stream America then how can they guess how we will think about a situation or how we will react. We’re not a frickin” science experiment! I’m just saying……they are too out of touch to pull this “HOAX” off.

FWIW - My new prediction: Obama won’t win as the Nominee. Hillary will win as Democrat Presidential Candidate but, will lose to McCain in the General election but she won’t care because she plans to run and win in 2012? (Either/or (1.) she hopes by 2012 most people will forget the sins of the Clinton Admistration, (2) She will keep campaigning by proxy as Senator, challenging everything McCain does as President, stirring up Congress, passing Bills, keeping her name in the MSM, etc, (3)and/or she will divorce Bill as he has not been an asset to her campaign.) Whatever ends up happening, because of Operation Chaos, it’s going to be entertaining!

  22. Lipstick on a PIAPS

Obama never was meant to win the Presidency, anyone with a lick of sense who vets politicians would have known of the Wright mess. Obama was meant to knock Hillary and Bill out of the White House stakes. Nancy Pelosi remains the most powerful woman in Washington and Presidente Juan McQueeg takes down the last vestages of the Republican Party by reaching across the aisle one time too many and accepts the blame for the socialistic policies that will come from this Congress. This is all playing into the hands of the liberals, they get to eat their cake and keep it too. They couldn’t give a damn about Hillary or Obama becoming POTUS it’s the power and the blame game they are interested in.
