Hungary Sludge Is Neutralized By Danube

From an irony proof Associated Press:

Hungary: Toxic sludge nearly as big as Gulf spill

October 8, 2010

KOLONTAR, Hungary — New Hungarian government figures on the red sludge flood show that the volume of muck that escaped from a burst reservoir was almost as high as the blown-out BP oil well spewed into the Gulf of Mexico.

Government officials said Friday that 600,000 to 700,000 cubic meters (158 million to 184 million gallons) of sludge escaped and inundated three villages before entering the Danube.

The oil spill amounted to more than 200 million gallons. That translates into 757,000 cubic meters.

Government officials previously calculated the volume of the sludge spill at 1 million cubic meters, or 264 million gallons

So, to review, the Hungarian sludge is 700,000 cubic meters. The BP spill leaked 750,000 cubic meters of oil.

And yet, within a few minutes, the Associated Press has replaced the above headline and story with the following re-write:

Mighty Danube neutralizes toxic red sludge

KOLONTAR, Hungary – The mighty River Danube was apparently absorbing the toxic red sludge with little immediate harm, officials reported Friday — even though the amount of caustic slurry spewed over western Hungary was nearly as great as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill

The red sludge entered the Danube on Thursday and was moving downstream Friday toward Hungary’s immediate neighbors, Croatia, Serbia and Romania, amid fears that it will kill off the river’s fish and plant life. Monitors were taking samples every few hours Friday to measure damage from the spill but there were no reports of major harm to the waterway’s ecosystem.

While Hungarian creeks and rivers near the collapsed reservoir have been devastated by the red sludge, the Danube, Europe’s second largest river, appeared to be absorbing the blow due to its huge volume of water.

Take a look at a map. Compare the size of the Danube, which is a river (if you can even find it) with the Gulf Of Mexico, which is an ocean. Ask yourself which has the larger volume of water?

The pH level of the water where the slurry entered the Danube was 9 — well below the 13.5 measured in local waterways hit Monday by the toxic torrent, Hungarian rescue agency spokesman Tibor Dobson told the state MTI news agency on Friday.

Dobson added that such amounts posed no damage to the environment

Remember that oil is a product of nature. It is not even "toxic."

Now compare and contrast this report with the hysteria the Obama administration and their media lackeys put us through over the BP leak, just a few short weeks ago.

Gee Steve. You are such a data nut.

What do the facts have to do with crises?

Anything that forwards the marxist agenda is a crisis. Damn the facts. Get with the program or get your dop kit ready for the gulag.

  2. Liberals Demise says:

I smell American Taxpayer money going over there to buy up the toxic homes and moving the people to a Arizona or New Mexico Indian Reservation.

  3. untrainable says:

Better yet, maybe they’ll build a new 7 Million Forint (Hungarian $$) School on the toxic site and name it after Al Gore.
