......“It’s not our bank members’ job to determine immigration policy,......"

No, and it's not my job as a taxpayer to financially bail your sorry ass out of a failed business, which failed due to your own greed and stupidity!

....."He returned to live there in 1997, but could not find work. Within months, he was back in Boston.

He still owns the apartment in Medellin, but had to rent it to someone else.....

Well, it apears someone else found a job and is earning enough to pay the rent this clown charges on his "rental" property. I wonder if these people ever listen to how they sound?

Would you like some cheese to go with that whine?

So he came here illegally (broke a law), got a SSN & DL (broke two more laws) and we are supposed to feel all warm and fuzzy because he is 'contributing' to America - how? By teaching another generation that American laws are for breaking - and when his neighborhood is the slums and ghetto when he is older because his kids and their generation are worse - who is he going to blame - oh, yeah the Americans.

A house, a big screen tv and a flat in Columbia - one wonders if that and 'its' connections' aren't what is paying for his piece of the 'American Dream' - bet his family is on welfare too.

No wonder he doesn't want his name known -

Well this is interesting. As a working professional I had to be making over $35,000 with proof of income to rent an apartment here in the Midwest at $645 a month. This is around 28% of the after-tax income, and proof of income was required. This guy is paying 80% of his income on his mortgage, and while the article says *he* is paying taxes, what about his family members, and the income from his tenant?

I think a lot of these people were wanting to buy homes not to avoid "wasting" money on rent but because a lot of commercial renters are now doing background checks, against both insurance risk and criminal databases. So they could either rent a room from a private landlord or buy a house, that choice is easy.

It sounds like the Colombian guy was convinced he'd be getting all his money back (or more) once he paid the mortgage off, but I'd have to question at what cost. Not only is there the interest he'll never see again (which would be the rent on a smaller place), but also working 11+ hours a day wears a person down. Then again maybe the plan was to sell the house at the right point and make a hefty profit. With the housing market now in the tank, I'd say that's a long shot.
