India ‘Recognizes’ Third Sex: Eunuch/Transgender

From the UK’s Telegraph:

India’s Supreme Court creates official third sex for eunuchs and transgenders

After two thousand years of persecution, India’s two million eunuchs to be formally recognised as third sex and listed as ‘backward’ caste entitled to reserved government jobs and university places

New Delhi – India’s Supreme Court has created an official third sex for its transgender eunuchs and announced they will have a quota of government jobs and college places to help them overcome discrimination…

"We are elated and thankful to the court," said Kalki Subramanium, a leading transgender rights activist. "The decision has come after a century of suppression and marginalisation by the legal and social systems…

India’s transgenders include those who feel they were born into the wrong sex, men born with deformed genitals and effeminate boys disowned by their families and sent to live in eunuch colonies.

Hmm. We wonder what our equivalent of ‘eunuch colonies’ is?

The court ruled that those who have been castrated or undergone gender reassignment surgery, as well as those who present themselves as not of the sex they were born into, can all be classified as transgender.

There are just under two million eunuchs and transgenders in India, many of whom live in groups controlled by a eunuch guru and survive by aggressive begging. Although marginalised, they are widely feared. They often turn up at weddings and after the birth of boys to demand large donations for their blessings. Many pay in fear of their curse or embarrassment – they often hitch up their saris and reveal their mutilated genitalia outside the homes of those who refuse.

That sure sounds like some of our own shakedown artists. Well, at least now they can get government jobs.

In the capital New Delhi some eunuchs operate as organised extortion gangs and their "tolly" collections are so successful there have been calls for them to be hired as tax collectors to boost revenues…

There you go! And even as we speak, our own IRS is thinking about hiring non-union tax collectors. Maybe we can import some of these transgenders on a work visa.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court said the Indian constitution provides equal opportunity "irrespective of caste, religion or gender". Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan said the "recognition of transgender (people) as a third gender is not a social or medical issue but a human rights issue."

It ordered the government to launch public awareness campaigns to end the stigma transgenders suffer.

Transgender campaigners hope the decision and their acceptance for government quotas will mean more fulfilling career opportunities in the future

Yep, nothing cures suffering like government quotas.

“eunuchs …and announced they will have a quota of government jobs”
this is where the White House has bragging rights on them.
On January 27, 2011, Jay Carney was selected to become the Obama administration’s second White House Press Secretary.
    when asked about his appointment,
Carney responded in some variation of “I don’t know” for the first of over 1,900 times since his first briefing.

There is more than one eunuch in the White House, the one in Oval Office comes to mind.

    cull .
to take out (an animal, esp an inferior one) from a herd.
    The American Heritage® Dictionary

    George Washington McLintock:
“Cuthbert H. Humphrey, Governor of our territory, is a cull. Do you know what a cull is, ma’am?
A cull is a specimen that is so worthless that you have to cut him out of the herd.
Now if all the people in the world were put in one herd, Cuthbert is the one I would throw a rope at.”

When the surgery was about to take place, the candidate was placed on a low bed in a semi-reclining position, and asked once more if he would ever regret being castrated. If the answer was no, one man clasped him about the waist while two others separated his legs and held them firmly down to prevent any movement. Tight bandages were wound around the thighs and lower abdomen, the patient was given a bowl of nerve-stunning” herbal tea, and his private parts were desensitized with baths of hot pepper water. Both penis and testicles were then swiftly cut off with a small curved knife as closely as possible to the body. A metal plug was immediately inserted into the urethra, and the entire wound covered with water-soaked paper and carefully bandaged. Immediately thereafter, the eunuch was made to walk about the room for two or three hours supported on each side by the “knifers” before he was allowed to lie down. He was not allowed to drink any liquid for three days, during which time lie suffered great agony from thirst and extreme pain, and was unable to urinate. At the end of three days, the bandages were removed, the inserted plug pulled out, and hopefully the sufferer was able to obtain relief with a copious flow of urine, at which time he was congratulated and considered out of danger. If the surgery rendered the eunuch unable to urinate, the passages having grown closed, he was doomed to an agonizing death.
