Investigators Got Obama-Care Subsidies With Fake IDs

From a shameless Associated Press:

Agents get subsidized ‘Obamacare’ using fake IDs

July 23, 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) — Undercover investigators using fake identities were able to secure taxpayer-subsidized health insurance under President Barack Obama’s health care law. The weak link in the system seemed to be call centers that handled applications for thousands of consumers unable to get through online.

This is a blatant lie that is even contradicted later in this article. (When we learn that 11 of the 18 attempts were successful online. Six more were successful, via calling the call centers)

The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office was to tell a House committee on Wednesday that its investigators were able to get subsidized health care under fake names in 11 out of 18 attempts.

This is another outrageous lie from the AP. As even they admit later, these attempts succeeded 17 out of 18 times. (The investigators just called the ‘call centers’ on the seven blocked applications, and got six of them approved that way. According to Fox News, the seventh was only not approved because the agents didn’t even bother to come up with a phone social security number.)

The GAO is still paying premiums for the policies, even as the Obama administration attempts to verify phony documentation. Those additional checks appeared to need tightening; the GAO said parts of the fake documentation it submitted for two applications actually got verified.

The agency’s findings are contained in testimony to be delivered at the House Ways and Means Committee hearing. An advance copy was provided to The Associated Press.

The GAO report will provide another line of attack for Republican lawmakers who have relentlessly tried to kill the 2010 Affordable Care Act…

Those venal Republicans never miss a chance.

The administration pointed out that six of the GAO’s fake online applications were blocked by eligibility checks built into computer systems at HealthCare.gov. Still, the GAO says its undercover agents found a way around that by phoning the call centers and were able to enroll anyway…

You see? This one sentence puts the lie to the AP previous two claims. Most of this was done online. And 17 out of 18 succeeded. Not just 11.

The GAO said its investigators concocted fake identities using invalid Social Security numbers and falsely claiming citizenship or legal residence. In other cases, they made up income figures that would disqualify them from getting subsidies…

In any case, none of this should be a surprise. In fact, we were told at the beginning of this month that the federal exchange had a least 2.9 million ‘discrepancies.’

And most the discrepancies were due to the fact that: "The [HHS] inspector general found that key personal details submitted by many consumers — such as annual income and citizenship — do not match records the government has on file."
