Iran to enrich uranium to 20 percent for needed fuel

Wed, 02 Dec 2009

Days after Iran announced that it would start building ten new industrial scale enrichment plants, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Iran will start enriching uranium to a level of 20 percent.

Addressing a crowd in Iran’s central province of Isfahan, President Ahmadinejad said the West has been making efforts to get in the way of Iran’s nuclear progress.

"We asked for 20 percent enriched uranium fuel which according to the regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) they can provide us with. However, they refused to do so," President Ahmadinejad said.

"God willing, Iran will produce [nuclear] fuel enriched to a level of 20 percent," the Iranian president announced.

The remarks came as earlier Deputy Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Baqeri warned that should the IAEA fail to provide Iran’s needed fuel, the country would move to enrich uranium to a level of 20 percent on its own.

The new nuclear development comes as Tehran’s research reactor has run out of fuel after years of operation and therefore Iranian nuclear officials called on the IAEA to provide the required fuel for the medical reactor.

"Based on legal terms, we have no problem to obtain the fuel for the Tehran reactor as enrichment to a level of more than 5 percent or 20 percent is not prohibited to be carried out by different countries [that are signatories to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)]," Baqeri, who is a deputy to Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili said earlier.

Iran has been producing 3.5 percent enriched uranium over the past few years. So a hike up to 20 percent is quite a defiant boost.

As the article notes, they now claim their new “research reactor” in Tehran needs uranium enriched to 20 percent.

Of course all of this is part of their inevitable march towards nuclear weapons, which require uranium enriched up to levels around 90 percent.

But there is no need to worry. The UN’s IAEA is monitoring the situation.

And if the Iranians go too far, there will be sanctions – and maybe even a stiff note from the The Times.

Mutt Face Ahmadinejihad is going to get alot of Iranians killed over 20% enriched Uranium. What happens if they accidentally hit the 90% instead of the 20% mark? Oopsy…….back to the drawing board?
Screw the IAEA……Israel has got this one.
    With or without us!!

    A-jad, it’s like this:

If I thought for one minute you only needed this uranium for making nuclear power so that everyone in your country could have clean, cheap electricity, I’d be all for it.

But, ya see, A-jad, going back to the whole Shah thing….and then, there’s all this political prisoner junk….and moving ahead to today….there’s that pesky election thing complete with murders and executions for those who didn’t support you…..and….well….that gorilla in the room….that thing about death to Israel and all that…..well, frankly, it makes me a tad suspicious of your motives.

Please understand, then, if I’m just not totally jazzed about your uranium needs.

Obamy’s plan is working as designed.

Building a nuke is not like buying a new purse. There is no return policy.

A country that gets nukes will never relinquish them. Some countries can handle them. But Iran is so unstable, tyrannical, and fanatically opposed to Israel that the mullahs may use those nukes. “Allah Akbar” followed by a mushroom cloud is not my idea of progress.

If Iran uses softball diplomacy to develop nukes under Obama’s watch, we will have a problem on our hands for decades. It will risk a second Holocaust against the Jews and start a nuclear arms race neighboring Sunni Islamic countries.

Iran knows they can gain ground. Appeasement doesn’t work with bullies and it doesn’t work with power hungry fools who support radical Islam.
