Iran Issues Warning After Attacking US Drone

From Reuters:

Iran issues warning after targeting U.S. drone

November 9, 2012

DUBAI (Reuters) – Iran said it would deal decisively with any foreign encroachment into its airspace, an apparent warning to the United States after one of its surveillance drones was targeted by Iranian warplanes last week…

"Targeting"? They shot at it.

"The defenders of the Islamic Republic will respond decisively to any form of encroachment by air, sea or on the ground," Fars news agency quoted General Massoud Jazayeri, a senior armed forces commander, as saying on Friday.

"If any foreign aircraft attempts to enter our airspace our armed forces will deal with them," he said. Jazayeri did not mention the drone incident specifically…

Was this their first "warning"? If so, why did they wait until after the elections? Did they want Obama re-elected? If not, why are we just hearing about their warning now?

Anyway, this is just another feather in the cap for Obama’s masterful foreign policy.

Meanwhile, we have this from the Associated Press:

Senators mull tougher Iran sanctions

By BRADLEY KLAPPER | November 9, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawmakers are working on a set of new and unprecedented Iran sanctions that could prevent the Islamic republic from doing business with most of the world until it agrees to international constraints on its nuclear program, officials say.

The bipartisan financial and trade restrictions amount to a "complete sanctions regime" against Tehran, according to one congressional aide involved in the process. But it could put the Obama administration in a difficult position with allies who are still trading with Iran, but whom the U.S. needs if it is to secure a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear standoff…

On Thursday, in its first foreign policy announcement since the president’s re-election, the administration targeted four Iranian officials and five organizations with sanctions for jamming satellite broadcasts and blocking Internet access for Iranian citizens…

And not for shooting at one of our aircraft in international air space? Are we supposed to believe the Obama administration didn’t know about the attack until yesterday?

But the measures that Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., want to attach to a defense bill would be far more sweeping. They would target everything from Iranian assets overseas to all foreign goods that the country imports, building on the tough sanctions package against Tehran’s oil industry that the two lawmakers pushed through earlier this year, congressional aides and people involved in the process said. Those earlier measures already have cut Iran’s petroleum exports in half and hobbled its economy…

These sanctions won’t work any better than the previous ones. Especially since our friends Russia and China will continue to ignore them completely.

But their effectiveness aside, why aren’t we hearing complaints from rights groups and the news media about how the innocent civilians in Iran are being starved by these sanctions?

Remember the constant parade of stories we heard about the "millions of children" starving to death in Iraq because of President Bush’s sanctions on Saddam Hussein? Stories that turned out to have absolutely no basis in fact.

Apparently, only Republican sanctions are bad for kids. Democrat sanctions are good for them.
