Iran Quits Talks, US Ends Non-Lethal Syrian Aid

From a blind-sided Agence France Presse:

Iran says US blacklist move against spirit of nuclear deal

December 13, 2013

Tehran (AFP) – … Iranian negotiators quit the implementation talks late on their fourth day Thursday after Washington blacklisted a dozen companies and individuals for evading US sanctions, state media reported.

Mehr news agency quoted informed sources as saying the "new American sanctions" were the reason for the interruption of the talks.

"The negotiations were halted by Iranian delegation because of new American sanctions. The Iranian negotiating team has halted the talks at this stage and are headed back to the capital due to America’s lack of commitment to the agreement," Mehr reported…

And then there is this from a gobsmacked Associated Press:

US, Britain halt nonlethal aid in northern Syria

By ZEINA KARAM and DESMOND BUTLER | December 12, 2013

BEIRUT (AP) — The U.S. and Britain said Wednesday they were suspending deliveries to rebels in northern Syria of nonlethal aid such as communications equipment and laptops after some of the gear was seized by Islamic militants.

The decision reflected fears of the growing strength of al-Qaida-linked forces among the rebels in the civil war, complicating the West’s goal of bolstering the moderate opposition and persuading President Bashar Assad to step down…

And never mind that there is no real ‘moderate opposition.’

The suspension dealt another blow to the Syrian opposition, highlighting diminishing international support for their cause as the extremists rapidly expand their hold across rebel-held territories

The decision by the U.S. and Britain comes few days after ultraconservative opposition factions took control of Free Syrian Army bases and warehouses containing lethal and non-lethal weapons at the Bab al-Hawa crossing between Syria and Turkey…

"The decision is a belated but clear recognition by the Americans and its allies of the collapse of the Syrian opposition umbrella and its armed wing," said Fawaz A. Gerges, director of the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics…

Of course, neither of these developments should be a shock to anyone who has been paying attention. Which leaves out the Obama administration and their news media.
