Human Rights Watch: Iraqi gays tortured and killed

By Kim Gamel, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD – Militiamen are torturing and killing gay Iraqi men with impunity in a systematic campaign that has spread from Baghdad to several other cities, a prominent human rights group said in a report.

Human Rights Watch called on the Iraqi government to act urgently to stop the abuses, warning that so-called social cleansing poses a new threat to security even as other violence recedes.

The bodies of several gay men were found in Baghdad’s main Shiite district of Sadr City earlier this year with the Arabic words for "pervert" and "puppy" — considered derogatory terms for homosexuals in Iraq — written on their chests.

The New York-based advocacy group said the threats and abuses have since spread to the cities of Kirkuk, Najaf and Basra, although the practice remains concentrated in the capital.

"Murders are committed with impunity, admonitory in intent, with corpses dumped in garbage or hung as warnings on the street," the 67-page report said.

Reliable numbers weren’t available, Human Rights Watch said, blaming a combination of the failure of authorities to investigate such crimes and the stigma preventing families from reporting the deaths. But it cited a well-informed U.N. official as saying in April that the death toll was probably "in the hundreds."

The campaign has been largely blamed on Shiite extremists who have long targeted behavior deemed un-Islamic, beating and even killing women for not wearing veils and bombing liquor stores.

Shiite militiamen have for the most part stopped their violence against rival Sunnis after radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s forces were routed by U.S. and Iraqi forces last year and declared a cease-fire. But the report indicated they were conducting a less publicized campaign of social cleansing.

"The same thing that used to happen to Sunnis and Shiites is now happening to gays," said a doctor who had fled Baghdad and was interviewed for the report. The doctor, who described himself as gay, said several of his friends had been killed

Homosexuals have been targeted throughout the Iraq war, but the killings appear to have intensified as improvements in overall security led gay men to begin going out to cafes in groups and socializing in public, according to the report.

Human Rights Watch accused authorities of doing nothing to stop the killings and warned that reflected an overall inability to protect the people.

"These killings point to the continuing and lethal failure of Iraq’s post-occupation authorities to establish the rule of law and protect their citizens," said Rasha Moumneh, a researcher at Human Rights Watch.

The Human Rights Watch report was based on interviews with more than 50 Iraqi men who identified themselves as gay as well as Iraqi human rights activists, journalists and doctors…

Human Rights Watch singled out the use of glue to seal men’s rectums as a common form of torture.

The report said Iraqi law does not ban consensual homosexual conduct between adults but contains certain provisions that can be exploited, including Saddam Hussein-era provisions that could reduce penalties for so-called honor crimes and crimes against people due to their sexual orientation.

Funny how we never heard much about this when Mr. Bush was arguing that US forces needed to stay in Iraq to prevent reprisals against various minorities.

(And, come to think of it is funny how we no longer hear the argument against have homosexuals – or, for that matter, women – in combat operations because of the reprisals they might face if captured.)

But it is a dead certainty that Iraqis homosexuals will be the next group to demand political asylum and resettlement in the United States. If they aren’t demanding it already. Which, judging from the sign in the photograph above, they are.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch seems to have its own problems.

From (the great) Commentary magazine:

Who Is Human Rights Watch’s Joe Stork?

Noah Pollak – 08.16.2009 – 11:34 AM

He is, of course, the author of last week’s Human Rights Watch report, which claimed that IDF soldiers murdered white-flag-waving Palestinian civilians in cold blood. He is also the deputy director of HRW’s Middle East and North Africa programs. We already knew from NGO Monitor that he has—to put it politely—a rather extremist history on all matters Israel.

But now there is a better accounting. Ben-Dror Yemini of the Israeli newspaper Ma’ariv has a blockbuster article laying out the ugly truth of Stork’s history. The Hebrew is available here; below is a complete English translation. That HRW would place in a senior position someone who has written in explicit support of terrorism against Israel, lauded the murder of Israeli athletes at Munich in 1972 as providing “an important boost in morale among Palestinians,” and stated that “Zionism may be defeated only by fighting imperialism”—this should be the final verdict on a cretinous organization’s already tattered credibility.

AUTHOR OF REPORT AGAINST ISRAEL SUPPORTED MUNICH MASSACRE

By Ben-Dror Yemini, Ma’ariv, 16.8.09, p. 13

Joe Stork, a senior official in Human Rights Watch, which accuses the IDF of killing Palestinians who waved white flags, is a fanatical supporter of the elimination of Israel. He was a friend of Saddam, ruled out negotiations and supported the Munich Massacre, which “provided an important boost in morale among Palestinians.”

Last Thursday, many world media outlets covered the press conference in which a senior Human Rights Watch official, Joe Stork, presented the report accusing Israel of killing twelve Palestinians in the Gaza Strip who waved white flags during Operation Cast Lead. Stork, the person identified with the report, has a unique history of Israel-hating: He supported the murder of Israeli athletes in Munich, was an avid supporter of Saddam Hussein and more.

Several times in the past, Stork has called for the destruction of Israel and is a veteran supporter of Palestinian terrorism. Already as a student, Stork was amongst the founders of a new radical leftist group, which was formed based on the claim that other leftist groups were not sufficiently critical of Israel and of the United States’ support of it. Already in 1976, Stork participated in a conference organized by Saddam Hussein which celebrated the first anniversary of the UN decision that equated Zionism with racism. Stork, needless to say, arrived at the conference as a prominent supporter of Palestinian terrorism and as an opponent to the existence of the State of Israel.

He also labeled Palestinian violence against Israel as “revolutionary potential of the Palestinian masses”—language that was typical of fanatical Marxists.

In articles which he authored during the 1970’s, Stork stated that he was against the very existence of Israel as an “imperialistic entity” and, to this end, provided counsel to Arab regimes on how to eliminate the Zionist regime. He also was opposed to any negotiations since this meant recognizing its existence: “Zionism may be defeated only by fighting imperialism,” wrote Stork, “and not through deals with Kissingers.”

On other occasions, Stork expressed his position that the global Left must subordinate itself to the PLO in order to strengthen elements that opposed any accord with Israel. It would seem that he has not changed his ways since then. He is still conceptually subordinate to those who have maintained their opposition to the existence of the State of Israel. Once the world’s radical left supported the PLO. Today, part of the global Left supports Hamas.

Stork, of course, is not alone. The hate ships that arrive from time to time, or attempt to arrive, to the shores of Gaza, are full of radicals of his ilk. They do not identify with efforts towards compromise or peace. On the contrary, they identify with those who are continuing the old line that supports the elimination of Israel. And what would happen if the PLO should decide to enter the negotiations track? Stork already recommended years ago that the Palestinian left splinter in order to continue the resistance. Hamas obeyed. It is possible to guess where Stork’s heart lays.

Where does Stork stand regarding matters of objectivity and neutrality? He criticized Professor Ibrahim Abu-Lughod, himself a PLO figure, because he edited an anthology which tried, at least seemingly, to produce a balanced presentation. “Academic neutrality is deceitful,” wrote Stork. And what about factual accuracy? Stork claimed that Menachem Begin said that, ‘The Palestinians are two-legged animals.” In fact, Begin said that those who come to kill children are “two-legged animals.” The difference is, of course, huge. Stork, time after time, justifies his high standing in the industry of hate and lies against Israel.

Stork reached his peak in a statement published by the Middle East Research and Information Project, which dealt with gathering information on the Middle East conflict, and in which Stork was a leading figure. This was a statement that included explicit support for the murder of the eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics:

“Munich and similar actions cannot create or substitute for a mass revolutionary movement,” the statement said, “But we should comprehend the achievement of the Munich action…It has provided an important boost in morale among Palestinians in the camps.”

Murder and terrorism, if so, are a matter of morale.

This is the man. A radical Marxist whose positions have not changed over the years. On the contrary. Objectivity, neutrality or sticking to the facts are not Stork’s strong suit. He even proudly exclaims that there is no need for neutrality.

Is it possible to relate seriously to a report against Israel which this man stands behind? Both Camera and Professor Gerald Steinberg have revealed worrying data on the leaders of Human Rights Watch and on the two people who head its Middle East Department—Sarah Leah Whitson and Joe Stork—even before its latest report and unconnected to it. The organization, as part of its false presentation, issued polite condemnations of Hamas rocket fire. But it seems that such blatant anti-Israel bias leaves room for doubt. A Stork-produced report on Israel is about as objective as a report by Baruch Marzel on Hebron.

Israel is called upon to provide explanations in the wake of Human Rights Watch reports. It is about time that Israel publicly exposed the ideological roots of several of this organization’s leaders and demands the dismissal of these supporters of terrorism and haters of Israel. Until then, Israel, justifiably, cannot seriously comment on criticism from such a body.

While we are on the subject, Human Rights Watch is simply the new name for Helsinki Watch, which was formed in 1978 to monitor the Soviet Union’s compliance with the Helsinki Accords.

When was the last time Human Rights Watch reported any human rights violations under the Soviet Union Russia?

Mr. Putin must be running a very enlightened regime.

    Um……..er…………ahem……….is this thing on?
Universal Health Care will be able to reach out to these unfortunate knee benders and give them hope for a new beginning to what I have know was not the fault of my administration but was Bushes fault!
Furthermore….. it shall continue to be the last person to hold the office of President fault that the “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” didn’t reach out far enough to encompass those that regularly bend over to help out their fellow man, so to speak.
In closing let me be clear on this point……it is un-American to call Iraqi queers homosexuals!!

  2. platypus says:

SG, I’m not sure that bringing in the IDF article was a good idea. After all, the headline issue is Iranian murders of men of the sodomite persuasion.

In any case, the flip side of this is the wholesale embrace in America of perverted deviant behavior. Since it can be reasonably argued that each sodomite in America is directly responsible for at least 100 deaths from AIDS and other diseases, an argument can be made that Iran’s methods of dealing with the scourge of sexual deviancy are more socially responsible than ours.

The real question is why should we be concerned with other countries’ social cleansing methods when we would be outraged if they dared intrude in our methods of – ahem – maintaining social standards.

    • Steve says:

“After all, the headline issue is Iranian murders of men of the sodomite persuasion.”

      Actually, it’s about Iraqi murders.

I’m just trying to give some context to the very selective outrage of HRW.

I am outraged by the wholesale slaughter of anyone by Islamic brutes, including gay men. I’m sorry but I am a conservative and I do not personally find that statement or attitude in the least bit palatable.

  3. platypus says:

Oh, now I get it. You were using the Iraqi murders as a lead-in so you could bash HRW. That works for me – they certainly deserve to be bashed.

    • Steve says:

Well, maybe not ‘bash’ them per se. They do seem to do some good work now and then.

But they certainly have some questionable views.

  4. Right of the People says:

    Steve,

It’s kind of like the animal rights people, puppy dogs and kittens are so cute but we really don’t give a crap about snakes and other non-cuddly critters.

Why is it that the liberals are the first to embrace the Islamic hatred of Israel? Such hypocrisy…Do they not realize that Israel is pretty much the only country in the region with real religious freedom, where gays are not persecuted or murdered as they are under Islamic governments?

  6. paulcanning says:

If you want to practically help send some $$$ the way of ‘Iraqi LGBT’ http://iraqilgbtuk.blogspot.com

They run safe houses inside Iraq as well as supporting refugees in the rest of the middle east.

Whilst the HRW report is good news for raising the profile of the pogrom, only Iraqi LGBT is actually supporting people (saving them from murder) inside the country. But funds are scarce and they consequently have to turn people away.

To find out more, read their annual report which is published on their website.

  7. canary says:

AP sure has been doing more very poor unaccountable reporting lately.

“”The same thing that used to happen to Sunnis and Shiites is now happening to gays,” said a doctor who had fled Baghdad and was interviewed for the report. The doctor, who described himself as gay, said several of his friends had been killed…”

Iraq had been killing gays way before the Sunnis and Shiites, without even a trial. And how do we know this “doctor” is really a doctor or who he is.

“Human Rights Watch accused authorities of doing nothing to stop the killings and warned that reflected an overall inability to protect the people.”

We can’t control the Iraqi authorities what to do, or who to elect. And the U.S. military can not do anything about it.

*These killings point to the continuing and lethal failure of Iraq’s post-occupation authorities to establish the rule of law and protect their citizens,” said Rasha Moumneh”

Shame on AP for even reporting some idiot that blames the “US” for this

“The Human Rights Watch report was based on interviews with more than 50 Iraqi men who identified themselves as gay as well as Iraqi human rights activists, journalists and doctors…”

    A whole 50 unidentified witnesses.

As far as glue their rectums, it can’t be as painful as those hamsters that chew through women’s stockings, leading to gay men, having to go to emergency rooms. lol.

Steve, yep. And can you imagine how many unidentified people in Iraq would claim they are gay, just to get to the U.S.

Hey, helpless little girls sexually mutiliated should get asylum 1st, before grown-ups who can control themselves and defend themselves. Dang I thought they had caves.

These middle-easterns need to get a back-bone and kill the mean muslims. They need a revolution.

  8. canary says:

Apes transfer new strain of AIDS to a woman. Not sure if you all caught this a few days ago. But, when AIDs first came out, they said it was from African’s have sex with APES. Then of course, you have the liberals, that have determined it is the water in Africa. And while this woman who got a new strain, traced to Ape in Africa, she claims she had no contact, and most likely didn’t. But, someone she had intercourse with could have passed it. But, the pologamy, such as Obama’s father’s did, forced marrages to young girls, the witchcraft, such as the woman putting her menstrual blood in mens’s food, the law that if a husband dies, the widow then has sex with the brother, etc. And the Africans have refused to change their muslim religion. I found this interesting since originally, they said it was from sex with an ape. There is a virus that equine, which have to have coggins test, because it’s spreadable, they believed came from human sex with horses. And the Mexicans and donkey thing, (but they blamed the water in Mexico too. So, I find this interesting. And you might have seen this poor dog, that was being used for sex in America, and PETA found it a home. And when I was a child, this neighborhood bully had sex with his female dog. Anyways, it’s in the old testiment,
that it was a great sin to have sex with animals. And I think this is where the muslims got their idea to kill gays, though I think it’s absolutely wrong what they do to gays. But, just trying to give some insight. A few years ago, the rising was in teenagers, but it has now gone back to gays in America, being the highest rate. And while, I feel for the most part sorry for someone who thinks they are gay, and I do not judge, I just the liberals need to educate more. The schools have taught our children you can’t get it from slavia. But, if someone has an open sore, in mouth, then the blood is in slavia. While I understand the compassion and not being fearful of someone with AIDs, it’s time for the damn liberals to be honest, if they truly care about human life. I know this is groase, I’ve always said it came from monkeys in Africa. And if they allow the muslim laws, it’s going to spread in America even worse.
Also, cannabalism is on the rise. Witchcraft, men raping young versions is to believed to be a cure, eating young children’s body parts. Read and saw a documentary on it. George Bush has given more money to fight AIDS in Africa than Obama. It’s seems hopeless unless they change their beliefs, which they don’t want to do.
Not sure why Obama’s relative got and died from AIDS.

Here’s video of the ‘white flag’ incident, courtesy of Barenaked Islam:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uOug-mN3Tw

From the description: “Captured in this aerial footage, a Hamas terrorist plants an IED and then climbs into a house containing uninvolved civilians. Later the civilians and the Hamas terrorist exit the house waiving a white flag, at which point IDF troops approach and arrest the terrorist.”

The IDF covered their arses with video because they knew some wackjob would try to pull a stunt like this.

  10. bernieg1 says:

At first I didn’t understand, when pious Muslim men get to paradise they are greeted with houris, both beautiful young women and little boys. I asked myself how can they permit homosexuality and pedophilia in heaven? But then I realized that all that is forbidden to them in this world, alcohol, gay sex, little boys, etc. are promised in the next.

So they make the common, ordinary Muslim male completely frustrated and by promising him unearthly delights they can get him do do anything, including suicide to get there. Is there a more sick religion?

Just FYI, I linked to your article from Islam to Blame for Barbarism Not Culture

  11. wirenut says:

bernieg1 , It’s a cult of death and oppression, not a religion. Best stand up for the gays now. Not my lifestyle, but free-range drunken Irishmen will come up on their hit list soon. OH, don’t put pious and Islam in the same sentence, please! Sex with little boys? Goats, donkeys, camels, your on the wrong page.
