Jake Tapper Grills WH Chief Of Staff On Shinseki And VA

From the Politico:

Tapper hits McDonough on Shinseki

By JONATHAN TOPAZ | May 15, 2014

CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday criticized White House chief of staff Denis McDonough on the VA scandal, saying the Obama administration “ignored” calls for VA reform and demanding to know “how many dead veterans” it needs to make major reforms. Tapper, who appeared visibly upset during the interview, grilled McDonough several times on whether VA Secretary Eric Shinseki was still fit to lead the department.

Mr. Tapper’s father was a WWII combat veteran. So he might not have been faking his outrage.

“How many stories like this, how many letters like this, how many dead veterans do you need before somebody asks the question within the White House: Maybe this guy isn’t the best steward of these veterans?” Tapper said of Shinseki.

But Shinseki makes a great scapegoat. If he is removed too soon, the MSM might have to start looking at his boss. (Cf. the case of Kathleen Sebelius.)

He held up a May 2013 letter from House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) who wrote the Obama administration to warn of “an alarming pattern of serious and significant patient care issues at the Department of Veterans Affairs.”

McDonough began to respond: “The question Jake, is, are we doing everything every day to get the veterans the care and the opportunities they deserve …” “But you’re not! This letter was sent a year ago and you guys ignored it!” Tapper said, cutting him off…

Is Tapper unaware that the Obama ignores any and all letters from Republican members of Congress? No matter what the subject is. Fast & Furious, Benghazi, the IRS… It’s been going on for five years.

Tapper began the interview by asking a pointed question on President Barack Obama’s faith in the secretary. “How on Earth can the president still have confidence in him? People died.” …

The same question could be asked of Obama’s confidence in Hillary after Benghazi? (Just kidding.)

McDonough throughout the interview praised Shinseki’s efforts to reduce the department’s claims backlog and increase education benefits for veterans. He also reiterated how upset Shinseki and the president are about the scandal.

Upset that it came out, he means.

“The fact of these deaths is an outrage to the president. He’s made that clear. You heard what Gen. Shinseki had to say today. He’s mad as hell about this. Nobody’s more mad than the president,” he told Tapper. “[Shinseki] is going to get to the bottom of this,” McDonough added. “The president’s demanding that.” …

Just like Obama promised he would get to the bottom of Benghazi, and the IRS scandal, and all of the other scandals under his watch.

  1. What was Shinseki doing behind the scenes for Veterans that has so angered the Administration that’s they set out to destroy him through the media?

BTW – the VA Hospital nearest us just spent umpteen dollars of fabulous free standing parking lot roofs for close to one hundred cars. Steel I-beam construction. Like free standing carports. Sun shades, really. And then covered them with solar panels.

No – or delayed – medical care but dammit we got solar electricity.

  2. canary

Did not Eric Shinseki come to the US after he fought for the South Vietnam. Wonder when he became a US citizen.
