‘Jena 6’ Attacker Mychal Bell Shoots Himself

From those straight-shooters at CNN:

Mychal Bell, right, one of the Jena Six, hugs Rev. Al Sharpton after leaving the LaSalle Parish Courthouse in Jena, La., Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007.

‘Jena 6’ figure shoots himself

(CNN) — A teenager whose arrest in a racially charged assault case drew thousands of protesters to his rural Louisiana hometown was in a hospital early Tuesday after a shooting that his lawyer said was accidental.

Mychal Bell was cleaning a gun when it accidentally discharged, shooting him in the shoulder, his attorney, Carol Powell-Lexing, told CNN. He had surgery Monday night at a hospital in Monroe, Louisiana, and has not yet been able to talk, she said.

Monroe police Sgt. Cassandra Wooten said the wound was not life-threatening.

Bell was one of six black teenagers who faced adult felony charges in the 2006 beating of a white classmate in the town of Jena. The beating followed months of racial tensions in the community of 3,000 after three white students hung a noose in a tree whose shade was traditionally off limits to blacks at Jena High School.

The case of the "Jena 6" drew national attention from civil rights groups who argued that the charges were excessive. An estimated 15,000-plus people turned out for a September 2007 rally in the Louisiana town on the black youths’ behalf.

Bell eventually pleaded guilty to battery in a juvenile court, served several months in a youth home and later moved to Monroe, about 70 miles north of Jena.

Note that CNN manages to make Bell’s attack on a white teen sound like the product of the (mythological) “noose incident,” which it was not.

Meanwhile this report from CNN manages to leave out some other minor details. Details that were included in an earlier report from the Monroe (LA) News-Star:

Mychal Bell was on bond in shoplifting case; injury said not to be life-threatening

Barbara Leader, December 30, 2008

MONROE – Police confirmed late Monday that ‘Jena Six’ defendant Mychal Bell was taken to LSU Health Sciences Center in Monroe with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Sgt. Cassandra Wooten with Monroe police said Bell apparently shot himself in the chest about 7:40 p.m. at his home with a .22 caliber weapon. She described his injury not life-threatening.

Asked if Bell gave a reason for the self-inflicted wound, Wooten said, "He said he couldn’t take it anymore; he was back in the media again."

Bell, 18, who listed a Monroe address as his home, was free on bond following a Christmas Eve arrest on multiple charges, including shoplifting, resisting arrest and simple battery, related to an incident at Dillard’s in Pecanland Mall in Monroe.

Bell was arrested less than one month after he completed a sentence for his role in the beating of a fellow classmate, Justin Barker, at Jena High School in 2006

In the shoplifting case, police say Bell and an unidentified male were spotted Wednesday by store security after they placed $370 worth of merchandise in a Dillard’s shopping bag.

After the two separated, Bell left the store, was followed by a security officer and began running through the parking lot.

Police said Bell was discovered under a vehicle in the Sears parking lot.

Lt. Jeff Harris said Bell began "swinging his arms wildly" and delivered a glancing blow to the security officer with his elbow.

Bell was booked into Richwood Correctional Center and released on $1,300 bond. He will be arraigned at a later date. Each of the charges carries a possible penalty of up to six months in jail.

Louis Scott, a lawyer who has represented Bell in the past, said that preconceived notions on the part of Dillard’s employees may have played a role in Bell’s arrest.

"Dillard’s has a tradition of being overly suspicious of young black males," Scott said.

Scott said that personal and court experiences have led him to that conclusion. "He should at least have the presumption of innocence," he said.

Dillard’s has been accused of racial profiling in lawsuits in Texas, Mississippi, Kentucky and Georgia.

A Dillard’s store manager in Monroe referred requests for comment to Roger Williams in the company’s Little Rock, Ark., office…

"I am predicting that once all the facts are established, he probably will not be guilty," Scott said. "There has been more put on this young man than anybody can bear – people trying to provoke him, trying to make him react."

"If he was going to break the law, I believe he would have done it before."

Scott, Bob Noel and Carol Powell Lexing of Monroe represented Bell when he pleaded guilty to second-degree battery for his role in the attack on Jena High School student Justin Barker in December 2006.

Bell was sentenced to 18 months in the custody of the Office of Youth Development for his part in the crime. Bell also served a sentence for three previous unnamed crimes.

Because he was a juvenile when he pleaded guilty to the previous crimes, Scott said Bell is not considered to have a criminal record.

Suddenly the shooting doesn’t sound quite so accidental.

As is so often the case, you have to bypass our mainstream media and go to the local sources to get any of the actual facts about such stories.

Why is that?

We all know the story of the noose hanging, and that it had nothing to do with the assault. These are the kind of people who continue to promulgate the civil war was fought over slavery.

Things haven’t been going so well for people with traditional values recently, but incidents like this point out the one big thing we have going for us.

People on the other side are gloriously stupid.

And all the media cover-up in the world can’t overcome that simple truth.

Load up the buses….we gotta march because we alls knows sumbodies planted that ill gotten booty in this lads pocket!! C’mon Al and Jesse, times a wasting!! Bring the MSM witchu and lets stir up that ol’ black hate magic ya’ll do….soooooo well!!
Can’t even get the alibi right. First it’s accidental then it’s cause of the media coverage of his shoplifting. AH…….whose gun did this turd have and “WHY” did the turd have it? Jesus, is the media ever going to do their job? (other that rabble-rousing)
And all of this at the onset of KWANZAA……

“Dillard’s has a tradition of being overly suspicious of young black males,” Scott said.

What Scott failed to mention, is that Dillard’s has had a tradition of being targeted by black shoplifters and is forced to be suspicious of any black who is “shopping” by stuffing merchandise under their clothing.

But of course, even though the percentage of black shoplifters arrested in the past five years is overwhelmingly in the majority, protecting one’s property by actually taking pro active measures is “profiling’, “racist” and “bigoted”.

Dillard’s needs to stop watching black shoplifters, let them walk away with millions in merchandise a year so they dont get accused of racism, and concentrate on just the white shoplifters instead.

Why? Because everyone knows that you can accuse a white person of anything without worrying about being accused of racsim or bigotry, or anything for that matter.

Racially profiling for criminal activities is not unethical. Surprisingly, it’s not even illegal.

No, Mr. Scott, retail stores like Dillard’s are suspicious of anyone who looks like a thug and is lurking around doors with merchandise in their hands. I would submit to you that someone who goes shoplifting with a gun just might qualify as someone to be suspicious of.

  7. CGardner says:

From the NO Times-Picayune, it looks like some close to Bell think it was a suicide attempt:

According to a Monroe police report, Melissa Bell, Bell’s mother, and Rosie Simmons, his grandmother, said Bell had been depressed since his Christmas Eve arrest. His relatives said after being released on bond he talked of not being able to continue living as he endured more negative media attention.

On Tuesday, Monroe attorney Carol Powell-Lexing told CNN that Bell was cleaning the handgun when it accidentally went off.

Another lawyer, Louis Cook, told the Associated Press that after talking with family members, he believes Bell deliberately injured himself because he was afraid the arrest would ruin any chance he has to play college football.

    http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2008/12/jena_6_teens_shooting_injury_d.html

The article also notes that “a panel of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association denied his petition for an additional year of eligibility that he lost while in jail.”

  8. Zeusshiloh says:

Don’t you all know he was Christmas shopping for his mom and Grandma? Of course, his intentions were good , but he got caught when he left without paying for the presents.

I do wish that there would be those who would look seriously at black crime and black retention rates in prison without playing the race card. What has happened to this segment of the population?

I’ll tell you…..with no father figure in the home and the likes of Wright, Farra”CON”, Sharpton, Jackson, 50 Cent, Lil Kim ect.as a role model, it is no wonder why they are like this. No morals are taught to them at a young age anymore so once they hit the teens they are out of control …..with gangsta rap as there one true god and a ill concieved thought pattern if they are DISSED they must kill the perpetrator or face ridicule from their peers. We now are in the midst of a generation with NO social graces and plain ol’ socio-paths. In laymans terms…..they simply don’t give a shit!!

  9. Confucius says:

So how the did the little angel get a gun? Aren’t convicts, even if they are little angels, forbidden to have guns?

I hope Dillard’s sues Louis Scott for retailer-profiling and all those slanderous remarks.

      Good point and very funny!!

    • Steve says:

“Aren’t convicts, even if they are little angels, forbidden to have guns?”

I had wondered that, too. But I think the answer lies in here:

“Because he was a juvenile when he pleaded guilty to the previous crimes, Scott said Bell is not considered to have a criminal record.”

      Isn’t that handy?

Why is it that I don’t hear Orientals, Irish, Slavic people, Indians (from India), Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Indians (from America), Germans, Greeks, Italians or pretty much any other ethnic group bellyaching like blacks do. I mean just about every ethnic group in the world has been enslaved or treated horribly by some other ethnic group at some time during history and yet blacks act like they have a franchise on it. GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!!!!!!!! Go out and rent “Braveheart” and see how crappy the Scots were treated by the English. I’m part Scottish so I DEMAND the queen of England come and apologize to me and also write me a big check.

    • Liberals Demise says:

You have a legit point there. Not enough Scottish: NCAA coaches or players, NBA coaches or players, NFL coaches or players, NHL players or coaches ect. ect. ect.

I remember a popular poster here once said that American blacks suffer from “We Be Owed” syndrom.
