Karzai’s Brother Killed By ‘Taliban/Guest’

From the Agence France-Presse:

Afghan president’s brother assassinated

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AFP) – Ahmed Wali Karzai, the younger brother of the Afghan president and a deeply controversial powerbroker in the the country’s southern Taliban heartland, was assassinated at home on Tuesday…

Although the Taliban immediately claimed responsibility, Afghan intelligence officials said the Kandahar provincial council chief was killed by a guest.

Why would the Taliban lie about such a thing? Still, couldn’t both of these claims be true? After all, even the US is negotiating with the Taliban now.

A senior official with Afghanistan’s spy agency told AFP that the killer was an old friend visiting him at home. He said the gunman was not searched on arrival because of his close friendship with Karzai.

Naming the assassin as "Sardar Mohammad", he said he was a village elder in Karzai’s home village and was shot dead by bodyguards after the assassination.

Another Muslim on Muslim crime.

"He was visiting Wali in his home. They were meeting alone in a room, and he gets his pistol and shoots him dead and other bodyguards rush to the room and kill Sardar," said the official speaking on condition of anonymity.

Describing Mohammad as in "his late 30s or early 40s", he added: "Wali knew him from a long time ago."

You can be a "village elder" in your early 40s? That is upward mobility.

"We can confirm he has been martyred," Kandahar provincial government spokesman Zalmay Ayubi told AFP, providing no further details…

"He was shot dead at his house by one of the visiting guests not by a body guard, at around 11:30 am (0700 GMT)," said an official at Afghanistan’s intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security…

The family friend said a number of Wali Karzai’s guests were also killed in the gunfire, but there was no immediate confirmation on who or how many…

Perhaps it was just a party that got out of hand. We hear about such things in the US all the time. Especially if drugs are involved.

Wali Karzai was for years a deeply controversial figure, dogged by allegations of unsavoury links to Afghanistan’s lucrative opium trade and private security firms.

American documents leaked by Internet whistleblower WikiLeaks late last year painted him as a corrupt drugs baron, lifting the lid on Western thoughts long kept private on the president’s younger half brother’s tainted record

And never mind that the Taliban is completely funded by the opium trade, and we seem to have no problems ‘dealing with’ them.

He was shot twice by his long-time head of security Sardar Mohammed, who was himself killed almost immediately.

Ahmad Wali Karzai’s killing is the latest and most high-profile in a series of assassinations of senior politicians and security commanders across the country.

He wanted foreign troops to stay the course – even though his brother, the president, didn’t.

Nato officials had often spoken of putting Ahmad Wali Karzai “on notice” over allegations of drug deals, and corruption. .

The Afghan president said the assassination reflected the suffering of all Afghan people.

Critics said Ahmad Wali Karzai was a warlord mired in corruption who was openly involved in the drugs trade and had a personal militia at his disposal.

“Despite our worries about Ahmad Wali Karzai, he was someone the US could work with and he kept a lid on things in Kandahar,” a US official told the BBC.

The Commander of the International Security Assistance Force, US General David Petraeus, condemned the assassination, and said ISAF would work with the Afghan government to bring anyone involved to justice.

“President Karzai is working to create a stronger, more secure Afghanistan, and for such a tragic event to happen to someone within his own family is unfathomable,” said Gen Pertraeus.

Ahmad Wali Karzai had survived attempts on his life before, most recently in a rocket and machine gun attack in 2009 as his convoy was travelling towards Kabul.

Get real Pertaeus. Karzai isn’t the least bit sad now that his lynchpin brother is gone, and U.S. will leave sooner. He must appear to be happy of his brother’s death, as his own days are numbered.

As in the Taliban trying to get their heroin back, as green beans weren’t profiting.

You can be a ‘village elder’ in some urban areas too, because so many are killed in turf wars.

Afghanistan sounds just like the Hood to me. I bet they even have drive-bys.

Sardar “Kool J” Mohammad must have been dissed by Biggee W Karzai and that’s why he busted a cap in his ass. It’s all good.

“Every time Hamid Karzai and Qayoum Karzai (his brother) would come to Kandahar for a family visit, all the security responsibility would be given to Sardar Mohammad,” he said.

The Taliban said they carried out the attack, calling it one of their top achievements in 10 years of war.

He wanted foreign troops to stay the course – even though his brother, the president, didn’t.

As soon as Wali Karzai came out of the bathroom, he opened fire and shot him in the head and chest,” Mr Razeq said.

Probably a family honor killing. Karzai has to keep up saying he wants our troops out, but it won’t save his skin. His days are numbered too.
