Another wonder of "the Race to the Moon!"
Microwave ovens, cell phones (microwave communications), computers, CD / DVD technology, pens that write upside down and in zero gravity, ect, ect.

I wanted to be a astro-nut when I was a kid.

LD,

I'm all for the toys, I just wish with all the other problems here we'd stop throwing money away on going up there. I think NASA should be re-tasked with creating breakthroughs in science, heaven knows they've got the people and facilities to do it.

I use a Dell Optiplex 580. It's three years old but still going strong because it has enough RAM (8GB) and an adequate processor. I don't do games or other video intensive stuff, just word processing and Internet. Why do you ask?

Is the US Senate become the American version of the House of Lords?

I thought we cast off nepotism and the weird idea of marital tanistry over 200 years ago.

Going to the moon worked out. Look at the neat stuff in your house today that we take for granted. All because we went to the moon.
I am no JFK lover but I think we as a nation got a bargain on the spin offs due to the innovations of that program alone.

BTW ..... what kind of computer do you use?

LD, that is if you consider those achievements.

NASA existed way before we wasted all that time and money going to the moon. It was formed back in the 1915 as NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) with a charter to help design better airfoils and other things to help the aeronautics industry. In 1958 it became NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) so we could catch up with the Ruskies and Sputnik. Even if John the Adulterer hadn't made a big thing about it, NASA was plotting a way to go to the moon and beyond before he even was in office.

Fun fact: It costs around 500K just to try and launch the shuttle, even if it never leaves the ground. What a great bargain that is.

Back on the subject at hand, the Kennedy's have felt for years they are the US's royal family and have always acted like it. And to think, it all started with bootlegging.

The Democrats are going to step in it one of these days. What if she is more Mary Matalin than Mary Bono? Then wins in the special election. I dream a dream...

The nepotism thing is not just name recognition. It is family alliances. It is a throw back to earlier times. After Daly in Chicago, the place was going to hell in a handbasket. The unions were over reaching, corrupt officials were not keeping their word. The wrong people were getting bought off. It was a mess. Junior had to come in a striaghten it out.

If she's anything like Caroline Kennedy, the analogy might be apt.

Agreed.

I would go one step further and say that too many people vote based on the sound of the last name, irregardless of the family.

I too am glad Jeb didn't run.

In particular, I think comparing the poor widow (and yes, I do have compassion for even rich Democrat widows) to a horse is a tad over the top. Peace, bro. ;)

psst, hey MrBill: Your string is showing.

Are you really so hypersensitive that you think SG was comparing Vicky to a horse? I didn't even read it that way at all. But then again, I don't read these comments looking to be offended. Is it possible that he was comparing one debauched appointment to another [possible] debauched appointment?

I realize that they were elected.
My point is that dynasties are created by name recognition - people are actually stupid enough to elect someone based on family, not credentials.
Strictly speaking, it isn't nepotism, but it's ridiculous.
In the state where I live, people have been elected based on their last names, even though they had no ties to the person who established the reputation.
I truly believe that George W. Bush got the nod to run because many republicans thought his dad had done well in his many positions. Had Jed decided to run, he may have pulled votes from a better candidate.
It's about time that people started to look at what a candidate brings to the table, not their family ties.

Gee, given the headline, at first I thought, "isn't it a little early to start dating?" Then again, an Irish Setter may fill the void. After I read the article I realized the void is Teddy's seat, which brings to mind a whole nuther subject.

Isn't the law pretty clear on how this works? Didn't Teddy make it clear in 2004?

What's with these thugs and crooks? They think they rule the country. Looks like we really do need a lesson in representative Democracy. For me, never seeing another Kennedy wou;ld be great.

BTW, anybody have any one thing that JFK ever did that worked out for America?

Realistic or theoretical, nepotism doesn't belong in a republic. Even if it's just for a few months.

And choosing a Senator for "wildcard" or "sentimental" reasons? Sounds like liberal Massachusetts-think.

Both Bush's were elected. That is not nepotism.

Giving someone a U.S. Senate seat just because she was married to a Senator or friends with her husband's fellow Senators is.

(GLO, I'm not sure which Kennedy you're referring to, so I didn't address this.)

WHAT???? There are real Americans out there that care about this country. Real Americans that should be heard from. Qualified ones. Why does this seat have to be filled in the interim at all? Hatch and Dodd are out of touch and should be out of office! We expect this stupid politics from Dodd, but Hatch? Hatch is no better than the Democrats!
