Yes, we all knew that living in LA could be dangerous! All the more reason we should all learn to breathe through our nose. As well as a nation of chronic polluters, we have become a nation of chronic mouth breathers. We are designed to breathe through the nose which warms, humidifies and filters the air (including pollutant particulates). However this requires teaching the brain new tricks and most people need help with this. The Breathingwise Clinic in Pasadena, Los Angeles is an expert in this sort of thing. Help your asthma and bad breathing.

A couple things:

First, ozone way up high is good. Ozone just off the surface, not so much. I'm not going to talk about how much is needed where, and I've certainly heard exaggeration regarding the numbers, it's just I feel the need to clarify that point.

Second, don't pretty much all the new "stringent air pollution standards for cars" deal primarily with greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide? The problem here is that the government, thus the manufacturers, thus the consumers are putting money towards greenhouse gases, while the same money put into research for cleaner (rather than "greener") exhaust would actually help with real pollution problems.

I don't know about you, but I haven't heard about global warming causing asthma or lung problems. I honestly wouldn't care about the attempts to stop carbon dioxide production if it weren't for all the time and resources stolen from studying real problems. (By real I mean ones that have actual, rather than modelled theoretical, downsides.) These numbers all deal with particle pollution, and the article says it causes deaths each year.

Just something to think about.

"Low income people and some racial and ethnic groups often face greater risk from pollutants."

Well, of course!!! My goodness, whudda thought anything different?!?! Geeesh! (rolling the eyes)

"Pollution sources like factories and power plants may be closer to their homes"

Give o-blah-blah another 100 days and this won't be a problem either. Any industry with a smoke stack will be closed.

California is the harbinger of decline for the entire country.

A cornucopia of riches, drained to buy votes to elect political criminals.

If red states don't get serious quickly about defending against the federal malignancy, the same fate is in store for everyone. But if the sane states don't get serious about protecting their populations from the Obamafornia scourge, the ultimate fate of the country could well be violence and destruction.

Millions of Americans are not going to sit idly by as the investments of our lives of work and sacrifice are confiscated to grant illegals, criminals and deadbeats the benefits we have earned through the sweat of our brows.

Far be it from me to stick up for California but I believe a lot of their poor air quality can be traced back to the pollution in China.

American Lung association gives no scientific evidence, lists no tests or measurements, nothing as to their findings. Sad, Obama is using California legislation proposal to make car companies serve Californias problem.

"Pittsburgh is a very clean city - trust me. I do not know where they come up with that research. Most of the industry is gone from Pittsburgh - what on earth are they talking about?"

They are talking about the Clairton coke works monitors 15 miles se of Pgh. For ozone, the Harrison monitor 15 miles north of Pgh. But like those weather stations these sites have problems with location.

I thought that with all the liberal tree huggers in power in California, that there wouldn't be any pollution of any sort in the Golden State. How did it get this way? I lived in northern California over twenty years ago and will be the first to say that it's a beautiful state but it's being run into the ground by corrupt politicians and their stupid rules.

Yay Bakerstucky! We are the the red spot on the lungs of a blue state. The pollution in the air here is primarily from the agricutlure in the area. With the hot summers and the mild winters, agriculture is a year round industry. There is a theory that the prevailing winds drive the smog from the bay and the northern part of the valley down into Bakersfield, where it pools up in the bowl created by the surrounding mountains.

Bakersfield, we're number 1!
